Chapter 22 - The City Awakens

The penthouse shook as if the building itself were alive. Shadows pressed against the fractured glass, their whispers rising into a chorus that no longer belonged only to Adrian.

Adrian Veyne. Elara. Veyne Enterprises.

Adrian stood at the window, his fists clenched, his jaw tight. Beyond the skyline, the city flickered. Towers dimmed, streets plunged into shadow, screens across the metropolis warped into unreadable symbols.

Elara's voice trembled as she stepped closer. "They're spreading. They're no longer bound to this place. You've unleashed them."

Adrian's breath caught. His empire was bleeding, but now the city itself was trembling under the curse. He had built his world on control, on bending rivals to his will. But now, the curse bent the city itself.

The whispers rose, threading through the silence. Sacrifice. Sacrifice.

Adrian turned sharply, scanning the room. The shadows pressed against the glass walls, faceless figures clawing to break through. His empire glittered beyond, but it felt fragile, as though the city itself trembled under their hunger.

Elara's gaze held his, sorrow deepening. "You can't fight them alone. If you want to survive, if you want to protect your empire, you'll need me."

Adrian's fury surged. "I don't need anyone. I built this empire with my hands. I won't surrender it to shadows."

But the whispers grew louder, pressing against the walls. Adrian Veyne. Elara. Choose.

The chandelier trembled, crystals chiming like bells. Papers flew from the desk, scattering across the floor. Adrian braced himself, fury burning, but fear gnawed at the edges of his certainty.

And in the reflection, he saw himself—not the empire's ruler, not the man of control, but a figure fading into the faceless crowd, his city crumbling around him.

Elara's voice was soft, almost tender. "You can't fight them with contracts. You can't fight them with wealth. The only way forward is together."

Adrian's breath caught. For the first time, he realized the curse had forced him into alliance—not by choice, but by necessity.
