Aurora remained crouched behind the tall grain while quietly studying the flock.
She didn't move and neither did Reis. For nearly five full minutes, the two of them simply observed their prey.
The chickens weren't wandering randomly like she first thought. Every few moments, one of the larger roosters would raise its head and look around while the hens and chicks continued pecking at the grain. Whenever the rooster gave a particular call, the entire flock subtly shifted together toward another patch of the field.
"They have sentries..." Aurora murmured.
Reis nodded in agreement. "The bigger males are watching. Unlike us beastmen who can fight against the demon beasts, these little ones aren't that lucky. If they gets attacked by demon beasts, which happens way too often, they stand no chance... unless they flies away before danger struck them. So the males are on watch."
