Chapter 119 - Chapter 119: Ashenfall Reborn

The morning sun spilled over the battered rooftops of Ashenfall, glinting off shattered banners and glimmering pools of rainwater that collected among the ruins. Smoke lingered faintly over the northern district, though the fires had been mostly extinguished by the city's exhausted citizens. The scent of wet earth and charred wood mixed with the faint tang of blood still soaked into the cobblestones.

Inside the throne room of the palace, the remnants of Ashenfall's nobility and the high echelons of the church had been gathered. Faces pale, hands wringing fine robes or muttering prayers under their breath, they sat in tense silence beneath the shattered chandeliers. They had expected punishment, maybe death, but the man they had feared — Alaric — remained seated upon the obsidian throne, the red of his cloak contrasting sharply against the dark stone.

He regarded them quietly, eyes sweeping the room slowly, analyzing each face. There was no anger, no malice — only a calm precision that made the room shiver in subtle fear. One by one, he let his gaze linger, and then, as if deciding they were worth his attention, he rose.

The click of his boots echoed against the marble floor as he descended the steps from the throne. His smile was faint, but the power behind it was unmistakable.

"I am Alaric," he said, his voice carrying easily through the vast room. "The new governor of Ashenfall."

A ripple of nervous murmurs passed through the nobles and church officials. Some swallowed hard; others tried to keep their composure. Alaric continued, his tone calm, measured, but with an edge of steel:

"Now, for any city to prosper, the people in charge must be of one mind. Those who will not willingly follow Ashenfall's new order…" He paused, letting the words hang in the air like a drawn blade. "…please leave this city and never return."

He slowly surveyed the room, watching their expressions flicker between fear, calculation, and resignation. Whispered debates broke out among them, but none dared to move toward the door. The silence stretched, thick and suffocating.

Alaric tilted his head slightly and smiled faintly. "Good. It seems I was correct."

"You may all leave," he added. "But you will be summoned again."

The nobles and church officials rose cautiously, exchanging nervous glances, and exited the hall without a word, leaving behind a mixture of relief, fear, and begrudging respect.

When the room was empty, Alaric turned to his vice commander and the four captains standing at attention. He motioned for them to follow him to the treasury hall. There, under torchlight, they uncovered the true extent of wealth Alaric had brought with him — five million gold coins, just a quarter of the Jin Clan's treasury. The sheer volume of coins glittered under the torchlight, spilling into the large chests as if the palace had become a river of molten gold.

One of the captains, eyes wide, muttered under his breath, "To think… this is only a quarter of their wealth. Imagine how rich the Jin Clan truly was."

Alaric ignored the comment, selecting five chests and distributing them with deliberate precision. "Each of you takes a million coins," he said, counting out the piles carefully. "Use it to strengthen your divisions, train your men, and rebuild Ashenfall. The rest will remain under my watch."

He then gestured to a larger pile of coins — ten million extracted from the former governor's treasury — and instructed that it be allocated toward repairing the city, aiding the citizens, and restoring commerce. The captains bowed, awed and slightly overwhelmed by the scale of resources they were entrusted with.

---

After the distribution, Alaric walked to the highest tower of the castle, the wind tugging at his cloak. From this vantage, he could see the full scope of Ashenfall — the streets still blackened by fire, the outer walls pocked with scars of battle, but life beginning to stir again. Smoke rose from forges and bakeries, water carts clattered over cobblestones, and small figures moved through alleys and marketplaces, cautious yet curious.

He inhaled deeply, letting the crisp morning air fill him. The city sprawled before him — its people fragile, its walls battered, yet capable of rising anew.

"They fought… they survived," he murmured softly, more to himself than anyone else. "And now, they will learn what it means to stand under one banner… one order… one strength."

A small, almost imperceptible smile tugged at his lips as he straightened. He could see the future of Ashenfall stretching before him like an unrolled map — paths of commerce, streets fortified, armies trained, and citizens bound by order and discipline.

With one last lingering glance over the city he had claimed, Alaric turned and walked back into the castle. The throne room was quiet once more, but the air held a new weight — one of inevitability. Ashenfall was reborn.

And at its heart sat the Crimson Governor, calm, confident, and ready for what came next.
