Chapter 118 - Chapter 118: The Siege of the Inner Palace

The horns of Ashenfall sounded across the valley, a deep, sonorous wail that rolled through the night like thunder. From the ramparts of the great palace, signal fires burst into the sky, painting the storm clouds in crimson light.

Below, the city burned.

Flames climbed through the narrow streets, devouring the banners of silver and blue that had once marked Ashenfall's dominion. The river that cut through the city glowed with reflected fire, the scent of smoke and iron thick in the air.

Alaric stood at the forefront of his army, his armor stained with battle, his cloak torn but still bearing the insignia of his command. Around him, his captains waited — Ryn Tal, Talia, Hagen, and the others — their faces hard, weary, yet unbroken.

The Guardian's defeat had shattered the city's morale. The nobles had fled into the palace, dragging what troops remained with them. The defenders now clung to the last stronghold of Ashenfall — the marble citadel that overlooked the capital, carved into the cliffs like a crown.

"Archers on the left wall," Ryn Tal reported, pointing toward the battlements above. "Two hundred, maybe more. They've got heavy ballistae behind the first line."

Talia unfurled a map, the parchment slick from rain. "They've sealed the western approach. If we force the gate, they'll flood the outer courtyard."

Hagen cracked his knuckles, grinning through blood. "Then we don't take the gate. We bring it down."

Alaric's gaze lifted toward the towering palace. Lightning flickered behind it, casting long shadows across the burning city. His eyes burned with cold resolve.

"Form the siege lines," he ordered. "Catapults forward, shield walls tight. We break them before dawn."

---

The first volley screamed through the storm.

Massive stones crashed against the walls, each impact shaking the mountain. Shards of marble and steel rained down as the palace trembled under the bombardment. The defenders retaliated with a hail of arrows and magic bolts, streaks of blue light tearing through the darkness.

"Shields up!" Ryn Tal roared.

The front ranks raised their barriers, the sound of impact deafening. Arrows splintered against steel, fireballs bursting harmlessly against enchanted shields. Then the counterattack came — a wave of flame and wind unleashed by Alaric's command.

He raised his hand, and the air ignited.

Fire spiraled from his palm, forming a burning serpent that slithered through the rain, crashing into the upper wall. The explosion shook the ground — men screamed, stone cracked, and the gate began to splinter.

Hagen and his berserkers surged forward, hammering the damaged barricade with enchanted mauls.

"Push! Push!" he bellowed.

With a final thunderous blow, the gate shattered inward. The defenders fell back, chaos erupting through the courtyard.

---

Inside the walls, the battle turned brutal.

Steel met steel in narrow corridors where firelight flickered and blood slicked the marble floors. The nobles' guards fought fiercely — not for their lords, but for survival.

Talia darted through the melee, blades flashing. Each movement was precise, economical — a dancer in a storm. Ryn Tal followed close behind, cutting down any who broke formation.

"Inner sanctum ahead!" Talia shouted over the clash of blades.

But as they neared the grand staircase, a burst of power knocked them back — a surge of pure qi so dense it made the torches flicker. From the shadows above, a figure descended, wrapped in golden robes, the imperial sigil of Ashenfall gleaming across his chest.

"The Guardian falls," the man said coldly, "and yet the invader still dares to defile my halls?"

Alaric stepped forward. "Then you must be the Lord of Ashenfall."

The man drew his blade — elegant, gilded, thrumming with divine energy. "I am Lord Kaien Ashenfall, rightful heir to this realm."

"Then you know why I'm here."

"I know you're a butcher," Kaien spat. "And I'll see your ambition buried beneath these stones."

---

The two forces clashed.

Kaien's magic tore through the air, bolts of golden light raining down like divine punishment. Alaric countered with sweeping arcs of flame, deflecting each strike as sparks rained across the marble steps.

The very palace groaned under their duel — pillars cracked, chandeliers fell, and waves of heat rolled through the hall.

Kaien moved with precision born of noble training, every motion graceful and deadly. But Alaric was faster, his attacks relentless, every strike pushing Kaien further back.

Finally, Kaien's guard broke.

Alaric's blade cut across his arm, forcing him to his knees. The lord glared up at him, blood running down his sleeve.

"You think conquest makes you a ruler?" he hissed. "You're just another tyrant."

Alaric's expression didn't change. "Maybe. But I'll be the tyrant who survives."

He swung.

Kaien fell, his sword clattering beside him as the golden light faded from his eyes.

---

The hall went silent. The remaining defenders lowered their weapons one by one.

Ryn Tal entered slowly, bloodied but standing. "It's over."

Alaric looked down at Kaien's body for a long moment before turning away. "No," he said quietly. "It's begun."

He stepped up the grand staircase, flames still burning along the shattered walls. At the top, he pushed open the great doors leading to the throne room.

There, amid smoke and ruin, the seat of Ashenfall stood — carved from obsidian, inlaid with veins of silver and gold.

He approached it slowly, each footstep echoing in the empty chamber.

When he reached the throne, he placed his hand upon its armrest — then sat.

Outside, the storm broke. Rain poured through the shattered roof, washing blood from the steps of the palace.

From the city below, his soldiers looked up and saw their commander seated upon the throne of Ashenfall — crimson cloak flowing, eyes burning like embers in the dark.

The banners of the old kingdom fell that night.

And a new name began to spread across the continent.

The Crimson Lord of Ashenfall.
