Chapter 264 - Chapter 41: The Burden of Shadows, Part6

Part 6: The Price of Power!

Ayame's eyes slowly closed, the long lashes casting faint shadows across her pale cheeks.

Her breathing softened, slowing until it was almost imperceptible. Deep within her veins, a cold, suffocating pressure exploded into life—a raw, ancient chakra surging outward like an opening dam. Ayame's fingers relaxed, her hands unclenching as her arms fell loosely to her sides.

For a agonizing moment... she stood completely, unnaturally still.

Kaito stared at her, his heart hammering against his ribs in absolute terror. "Ayame...?"

When her eyes snapped open, Ayame was gone.

Her lavender irises were gone, replaced by a dark, terrifying gleam that pulsed with predatory malice. Her posture shifted—her spine straightening into a loose, dangerous curve, her head tilting at a sickening, unnatural angle. The air around her body visibly distorted, vibrating with waves of jagged, suffocating energy.

Then... a faint, chilling smile carved across her face.

Kaito's chest tightened, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. "Ayame...?"

There was no response. The beast had taken full control. And Ayame's body... was no longer moving like a human child.

The remaining Hunters snapped out of their hesitation and rushed forward together, blades gleaming in the dim moonlight.

The beast didn't draw a weapon. As the first Hunter swung a heavy shortsword aimed straight for her neck, Ayame's body tilted by a mere fraction of an inch. The blade cut empty air, whistling harmlessly past her cheek. Before the Hunter could recover his balance, her arm whipped out like a coiled strike—she caught his heavy wrist, shifted her center of gravity, and hurled his armored body effortlessly into the adjacent stone wall with a bone-shattering crash.

Another Hunter lunged violently from behind. The beast whirled in a terrifying blur, catching the man's forearm mid-strike, twisting it until steel clattered onto the cobblestones, and driving a chakra-infused palm squarely into his chest, blasting him backward.

A third Hunter charged from the flank. Ayame stepped forward into his guard. The kunai in her hand flashed like a streak of silver, striking the joints of his armor and dropping him instantly to the ground.

Kaito stared with wide, unblinking eyes, his voice a terrified whisper. "That's... Ayame?"

Haruto remained on his knees, his hands pressed tightly over his mouth as his stomach churned. He couldn't answer. He could only stare in paralyzed horror at the monster wearing his sister's face.

Another group of Hunters surged toward her. Ayame's body moved before their heavy boots could even complete a step.

One step. Then another. She glided through the tight formation like smoke slipping through fingers, completely untouched by their wild slashes. The iron wire wrapped around her kunai snapped outward in a lethal spiral. She yanked it sharply, altering its trajectory mid-air—the spinning blade clipped two Hunters across their knee joints, sending them crashing onto the stones in screaming piles.

A Hunter lunged from the side, but Ayame turned instantly, her heel sweeping across the pavement to kick his legs out from under him before striking him away with brutal precision.

More Hunters surrounded her in a tight, desperate circle.

For a fleeting second... she stood completely still in the eye of the storm.

Then, the beast smiled through her face—a wide, terrifying sneer—and exploded into action.

The Hunters charged all at once. Ayame vanished into the mess of armored bodies and flashing steel. One after another, the sounds of snapping metal, heavy impacts, and agonizing groans erupted from the dark. Men were hurled backward, crashing into alley walls and collapsing into motionlessness.

Kaito's eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "She's actually winning..."

Haruto slowly raised his head from the blood-stained cobblestones.

Ayame stood in the very center of the narrow street. Still. Completely untouched.

The few remaining Hunters backed away, their hands trembling on their weapon hilts as they hesitated in absolute terror. For a moment... it looked like the battle was already decided.

Then, Ayame's fingers twitched violently.

Deep inside the dark mindscape, the beast's expression instantly hardened.

...Something's wrong.

Ayame's breathing suddenly became heavy, ragged, and shallow. The dark energy coating her skin flickered erratically like a dying flame. The beast tried to force her body to leap forward, and her limbs responded... but with a sickening, heavy lag.

The beast's internal expression shifted into a grimace. Your body can't handle this.

It could feel everything now. The deep, hidden decay—the chronic weakness that had been silently eating away at Ayame's body for years. The sheer exhaustion from her sickness. And now... the heavy, unnatural weight creeping through her nervous system.

The beast tried to force her muscles to contract again. Ayame's legs shuddered, responding even slower this time.

You took too much, the beast growled into the dark void.

Somewhere deep inside the dark space of her own consciousness, Ayame's mind stirred. Too much of what?

The beast went silent for a fraction of a second. That chocolate.

Ayame's eyes widened internally. You noticed?

Of course I noticed, the beast spat, its voice sharp with annoyance. You took more than your brothers. Three full doses of concentrated tranquilizers. And your body was already collapsing before tonight.

Ayame tried to force her willpower outward, fighting against the heavy paralysis settling into her limbs. I can handle it!

No, the beast's voice growled, razor-sharp. You can't. Every time I push this body further to channel my power, the chemical damage gets worse. You are poisoning yourself from the inside out.

Ayame clenched her fists within her own consciousness, her resolve burning through the haze. Then we finish this quickly!

The beast let out a dark, cruel chuckle. Now you're thinking correctly.

Its control tightened once more. Ayame's body slowly raised its head in the real world. The dark chakra around her flickered violently once, twice, before stabilizing through sheer force of will.

The remaining Hunters, seeing her stumble and sense her sudden weakness, began moving again.

The beast locked its dark gaze onto them. Let me finish this before your body gives up entirely.

The Hunters charged together.

One brute broke through her weakened guard, his heavy iron gauntlet swinging in a brutal arc. It struck Ayame squarely across the cheek with a sickening CRACK.

Ayame was knocked violently backward, her feet dragging helplessly against the wet cobblestones. Before she could regain her balance, another Hunter grabbed her by her dark hair, yanking her back as a second heavy strike slammed squarely into her stomach.

Ayame's body doubled over in agony.

Cough!

A spray of dark blood erupted from her lips, splattering across the cold pavement.

The beast's expression hardened into pure rage deep within her mind. Get up!

A massive Hunter stepped forward and snagged Ayame by the collar of her shirt, lifting her completely off her feet. Ayame's body jerked forward helplessly. Her weak, poisoned fingers reached up, grabbing his iron arm in a desperate attempt to pull herself free, but the Hunter only tightened his iron grip, cutting off her air.

Ayame struggled harder, her boots kicking uselessly at the air as the tranquilizer completely paralyzed her muscles.

Deep in the dark mindscape, the beast bared its fangs, focusing every ounce of its remaining dark chakra into her arms.

Break his grip!

Kaito watched Ayame struggle, every agonizing second burning into his mind. His fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned stark white. If Ayame can keep pushing through this... if she can do it, then I can do it too.

A sudden wave of desperate resolve took over. Charging forward into the fray, he screamed with every shred of breath left in his lungs, "LEAVE MY SISTER!"

Before his voice could even echo, one of the Hunters spun around. A cold, heavy metal gauntlet cut through the air, slamming squarely into Kaito's chest with monstrous force. The impact was brutal—a sickening, audible CRACK shattered the air as his ribs instantly broke under the crushing blow.

The momentum launched Kaito backward off his feet. He flew through the air like a ragdoll before crashing viciously into the wall. The violent impact struck with such pulverizing force that his back and spine felt utterly destroyed, completely numbed by a blinding wave of agony.

He slid down to the cold floor in a limp heap. A ragged gasp tore from his throat, triggering a violent cough as blood spewed from his mouth and nose, splattering against his face and the ground. His breathing slowed to a faint, shuddering rattle. Slowly, the world went dark, his eyes fluttered shut, and Kaito fainted.
