Chapter 263 - Chapter 41: The Burden of Shadows, Part5

Part 5: The Monster Inside!

The false escorts spun around on pure instinct, weapons instantly drawn as their eyes scanned the dark alley behind them.

Nothing was there.

Their fatal mistake lasted only a fraction of a second, but for Ayame, a second was an eternity.

Her hand moved in a violent, fluid blur. The kunai hissed through the air, trailing a thin, taut wire behind it.

WHIP!

The wire snapped tight in the cold air. Ayame yanked her arm back with brutal force, guiding the trajectory. The razor-sharp blade swept through the dark in a deadly, horizontal arc.

SLASH!

Before the two rear Hunters could even process the trick, the wire sheared cleanly through bone and muscle. Both of their heads were severed instantly, flying into the gloom before crashing onto the stones. Twin fountains of blood sprayed across the stone walls as their heavy bodies collapsed like hollow puppets.

Ayame landed lightly on her toes, the wire slipping smoothly through her fingers as she drew her arm back.

For a moment... everything was dead silent.

Haruto stared at her, his eyes hollowed with absolute horror. "Ayame..."

The remaining Hunters snapped out of their shock, their faces twisting in rage as they drew their blades and rushed forward en masse.

Ayame whirled back toward her brothers. "Run!"

Instead of running, Haruto and Kaito fell to their knees. Haruto's breathing became violent, ragged, and uneven. He lowered his head toward the cobblestones, his face turning ghostly pale as his stomach violently churned at the stench of fresh iron and blood. He slammed both hands over his mouth, desperately trying not to vomit.

Kaito looked up at Ayame, his body trembling from the sheer weight of the horror. "Ayame..."

Ayame looked back at both of her kneeling brothers, her chest heaving. "Go."

Kaito shook his head wildly, tears welling in his eyes. "No."

"Please!"

"We're not leaving you!" Kaito cried out, planting his trembling hands on the ground.

Haruto said nothing. He remained collapsed on all fours, staring blankly at the dark blood pooling across the pavement.

Ayame stepped toward Kaito, dropping to her knees and gently pressing her forehead directly against his. The warmth of her skin was the only real thing in the nightmare surrounding them.

"Look at me," she whispered softly.

Kaito slowly raised his tear-filled eyes.

"See?" Ayame looked directly into his eyes, letting him see every ounce of the fierce, heartbreaking love she held for them. "Look at my eyes."

Kaito's expression trembled violently.

"Take him," she urged, her voice cracking as she glanced toward Haruto. "Take Haruto and go."

Kaito shook his head, a choked sob escaping his throat. "Sorry..." His voice dropped to a barely audible whisper. "I can't."

Ayame closed her eyes for a quiet moment, leaning into the contact. Then she pulled back slightly and stepped forward, standing between her brothers and the approaching wave of steel.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Kaito looked up at her back, his vision blurring. "For what?"

Ayame lowered her eyes, a deep, ancient sorrow darkening her features. "I'm sorry..."

Kaito frowned, horror mixing with confusion. "Why?"

Ayame looked back over her shoulder at both of them. "Everyone called you monsters. They said you were abnormal. They blamed you for things you never did." Her voice trembled, thick with grief. "But it wasn't you."

Kaito stared at her, his breath catching in his chest. "What are you saying?"

Ayame slowly raised her eyes, her pupils flickering with an unnatural, terrifying light. "It was me."

Silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating. Kaito couldn't understand. His mind refused to process it.

Ayame took a slow, heavy breath. "I have a beast inside me."

The words hung in the cold night air like ice.

"I'm sorry you both had to carry that name..." Ayame whispered, a single tear slipping down her cheek, "...when it was with me the entire time."

"I'm sorry I never told you... I was so scared you both would hate me if you knew."

Kaito's eyes widened in complete, paralyzed shock.

Ayame turned away, closing her eyes as she sank inward, reaching deep into the dark, boundless abyss of her own mindscape.

I need you, she spoke into the cold void. She took a slow breath. Take over me.

For a moment... nothing happened. The darkness within her remained still.

Then, a massive, reverberating voice answered from the deep depths of her soul, heavy with ancient exhaustion. "Not now."

Ayame frowned in her inner mind, her resolve hardening like tempered steel. Now is the time.

"I'm resting," the beast grunted coldly.

Ayame clenched her fists until her knuckles turned white. If you don't...

She opened her eyes in the real world, her lavender irises flashing with absolute, unyielding authority. ...and I die, you die too.

A long, suffocating silence fell within the dark void.

Then, the beast let out a low, terrifying rumble that shook her very core. "Fine."

Ayame's fierce expression softened slightly. If we survive... I'll give you a long time to rest.

A pause echoed through the darkness.

"...Deal."

Ayame offered a faint, fleeting smile in the dark. Deal.
