June 19th.
This was the big day. The movie Memento (which Zane had renamed Memories) officially premiered in North America.
But it was a very crowded weekend.
Disney's new cartoon, Mulan, came out.
20th Century Fox's The X-Files movie came out.
And there were three other small movies, too.
In total, six new movies were all released on the same day!
Plus, other popular movies like The Truman Show were still in theaters, taking up a lot of screens.
Because of all this, Memento couldn't get into very many theaters. It was going to be a tough fight.
...
On the day of the premiere...
Zane set his work aside and took his girlfriend, Adriana Lima, to the movies. She had just gotten back from a trip to Europe.
This was the fourth time Zane had seen this movie. He was almost sick of it! But Adriana wanted to see it, so Zane was happy to take her.
"Wow..."
"Oh my God!" "Zane, where did you find this director? He's really amazing!"
During the movie, Adriana kept whispering about how good the director, Nolan, was.
She was right. The movie was very smart and "mind-bending." The audience in the theater was also whispering about how cool it was. For people who liked smart, tricky movies, Memento was like a delicious, fancy meal.
...
After the movie...
Zane and Adriana were just taking a nice walk through downtown Los Angeles. They were a very good-looking couple, and some people were staring.
"Hey, excuse me, you two!" a man said, rushing up to them. "I'm a scout for a modeling agency. I wonder if you two have any interest in being models?"
Before the man could even get an answer, two of Zane's bodyguards, who had been hiding in the crowd, quickly grabbed him and pulled him aside.
"Hey, hey! Who are you? What are you doing to me?" the scout yelled, suddenly very scared.
Anyone would be terrified! Two big men in black suits had just grabbed him out of nowhere.
"Be honest," one of the bodyguards said in a cold voice. "Who are you, and what are you planning to do?"
The other bodyguard put his hand on his jacket, as if he was ready to pull out a gun.
The scout was so scared!
At that moment, several other bodyguards who had been hiding in the crowd all appeared, looking around to make sure Zane was safe.
All the other shoppers on the street got nervous. "?????" "What did that guy do?" "Are they making a movie?" "Idiot! Don't you know who that is? That's the super-billionaire, Mr. Zane Blackwood!" "Oh! Is that the guy who made the 'Got Talent' show?!"
Soon, everyone in the crowd knew who Zane was. He was super famous!
In America, you might not know the most popular movie star, but you definitely know who the rich people are. Zane had been in the news so many times lately, everyone knew his face.
"Well, so much for a quiet shopping trip," Zane said to Adriana with a wry, but charming, smile.
"It's okay," she said, understanding. "Let's just go back."
This time, Zane's shopping trip was not very fun. He was surrounded by 12 bodyguards who were all armed.
He knew he had to be this careful. Zane was very afraid of dying. If he didn't have his bodyguards, some crazy person might try to hurt him.
He had a very clear plan: Never leave the house, for any reason, without lots of security.
...
The next day, around 9 a.m....
Zane's assistant, Alexander, sent him the box office numbers for Memento's first day.
Disney's Mulan was number one, with $22.74 million.
The X-Files movie was number two, with $18 million.
...and Memento, even with just a few screens, was number six! It had made $5.2 million!
"Huh? Zane, is that good?" Adriana asked.
Zane shook his head and smiled. "Lima, it's amazing. The whole movie only cost $5 million to make. Making $5.2 million on its first day is a huge, huge win."
"Oh, okay!" she said, smiling.
Zane was very happy. He knew Memento was a special, "niche" movie. For it to make so much money when it was competing against Mulan and X-Files was incredible.
He was confident that with his company's good advertising, the movie would make way more than the $40 million it had made in his old life.
...
That same morning, at 10 a.m....
Zane was at his studio, Wald Pictures. Today was the casting day for My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
He wasn't going to be the producer of this film, but he was going to be the casting director.
Why?
Because he knew this little movie, which would only cost $5 million, was going to make a giant$369 million and break all kinds of records.
There was no way he was going to ignore a movie this special. He was going to give it his full attention!
