"Mr. Blackwood!"
The moment Zane walked into the big conference room, all one hundred people in the room stood up. They were all the writers for his new TV group.
Zane just smiled, a warm and friendly smile. "Everyone, please sit down, no need to stand up!" he said. "Take your seats."
He really wanted everyone to feel comfortable. He knew that as the boss, he needed to be a good and approachable leader.
"Boss," his assistant, Alexander, said, leading four older people up to him. "Before we start, I want you to meet the professors from Stanford University: Dr. Singer, Dr. Turley, Dr. Vivian, and Dr. Hortenski."
Alexander explained that two were experts in physics (the study of how tiny, tiny atoms work) and two were experts in law and crime.
"It is such an honor to meet you all," Zane said, shaking each of their hands with genuine respect. "I am so glad you're here. I know we're on a tight schedule, so how about we talk more right after the meeting?"
"No problem," they all nodded.
Zane had invited them because he was smart enough to know what he didn't know. Two of his new show ideas needed to be really smart. The Big Bang Theory was about science geeks who loved physics, and Prison Break was about escaping prison, which meant they needed to get all the legal and crime stuff right. He wanted experts to help his writers make the shows perfect.
"Okay, everyone, let's begin!" Zane said, his voice full of energy.
The room went quiet. The meeting was being recorded, which was a smart rule to make sure everyone's ideas were protected.
"You all have the four new scripts in front of you," Zane said. "These are the next big shows for our new Golden Dawn Television Group: The Big Bang Theory, 2 Broke Girls, The Walking Dead, and Prison Break."
He explained the plan: "The two comedies, Big Bang and 2 Broke Girls, will go on our free public channel, the WB. The two big, exciting dramas, The Walking Dead and Prison Break, will be for our paid UPN channel, as a special treat for our subscribers."
All the writers in the room, who were experts, had already read the main ideas. They understood the plan for the comedies. They were low-cost and easy to shoot.
But when they read the ideas for The Walking Dead and Prison Break... they were shocked.
These shows weren't cheap. They would need huge, expensive sets. They were as big as movies!
In the 1990s, TV shows were mostly cheap and simple, like Friends. The idea of spending a ton of money to make a TV show look like a Hollywood blockbuster hadn't really happened yet. (Zane knew the show Band of Brothers would start this trend later).
Zane was trying to be the first. He was going to use a huge budget to make these shows look amazing.
For Prison Break alone, he planned to spend $800,000 for each episode. That was way more than any other TV show. The whole first season would cost $18 million!
When the writers heard this, they all took a sharp breath. Hiss!
They could see Zane's giant ambition. They weren't scared; they were passionate. They were proud and honored to be a part of something so big and new. They all felt it: Zane Blackwood was about to change television forever!
(Zane had, of course, first thought about his other favorite shows, like House of Cards and Game of Thrones. But he'd already checked. He couldn't get the rights to either of them. The BBC wouldn't sell one, and the author of the other, George R. R. Martin, wasn't ready to sell yet. "I don't need the money!" the old author had said.)
But Zane was still happy. The four shows he had were an amazing hand of cards.
"And for The Walking Dead," he thought with a smile, "the comic book hasn't even come out yet. I can make the comic first... wouldn't it be fun to be known as a famous comic book creator, too?"
Zane stood up, his voice full of excitement and energy. "Alright, everyone. Here's the plan. I need the first drafts of all four shows... in one month."
"We are going to launch four hit TV shows, and we're going to do it together!"
