The child was led to the side, his small frame seeming even smaller beneath the weight of so many watching eyes. An elder stepped forward and gently asked him to recount what had happened.
The elven child stammered at first, his voice catching as though each word had to fight its way out. He was clearly intimidated by those present, the pressure of the hall pressing in from all sides. Those who opposed and wanted Matt to be punished quickly seized this opportunity, claiming the child was frightened and that there was no need for further questioning. Their voices rose, sharp and insistent, attempting to steer the outcome before it could settle. They were silenced, however, by the King.
"Let the child speak."
The hall fell silent, a heavy, expectant quiet settling over everyone as they listened for the words that would decide the outcome of the case. Even the faint rustle of clothing seemed to disappear in that moment.
"H-he didn't push me. I fell in on my own."
