When the video call connected and he saw that Pepper was alright, Tony Stark finally breathed a sigh of relief.
"Don't worry about me, Tony. Kai is with me. Where are you now? When will you be back?"
Upon hearing Pepper's inquiry on the other end of the phone, Tony paused for a few seconds, shrugged casually, and said, "Uh, a little thing happened, but it's nothing serious."
"Tony!!"
Pepper could tell at a glance that Tony was just giving her the runaround, and she subconsciously raised her voice.
"Alright, alright, we did run into some trouble, but don't worry. By the way, is Kai with you? I have something I want to talk to him about alone."
Pepper handed the phone to Kai.
Taking the phone, Kai got up and left Pepper's office. "What's wrong?"
"Damn it, Kai, you were right!"
Sitting on the log, Tony glanced at Steve, who was chopping wood with an axe beside him, then shook his head and said, "This time it wasn't us who tracked down Ultron, but rather Ultron who set a trap for us.
After Ultron attacked Pepper and sent you away, all of us except Clint were affected by Wanda's abilities. Even Bruce, who was hiding in the cabin, was affected!"
Tony's expression grew darker. "The plan failed. We're currently at Clint's ranch, and God, he's even married and has kids."
Seeing Tony's tone grow increasingly somber, Kai frowned and asked, "Is your anxiety attacking again?"
"The situation is terrible, Kai. Ultron stole a large amount of vibranium, and we couldn't get the scepter back either.
Most importantly, it was only after Banner reminded me that I made a phone call and found out that Helen had also been taken away by Ultron."
Tony stood up from the wooden stake and walked, patting the tractor that Laura had asked him to repair.
"Ultron definitely wants to use Helen's regeneration cradle to transfer her consciousness to a vibranium body. As for the others, they were all affected by Wanda's abilities and were in low spirits.
Sol said he was going to find the answers, but I don't know where he went."
Tony admitted with a self-deprecating laugh, "Maybe I really made a mistake this time!"
Seeing Tony's self-reproachful expression, Kai gently tapped his phone and comforted him, "Hey, Tony, this isn't like you."
Kai knew the Avengers team was now somewhat "falling apart" due to Wanda's abilities.
Tony, who felt responsible for Ultron's creation, must have felt extremely guilty seeing this scene.
Unlike the original storyline where Steve distrusted Tony and angrily grabbed Thor by the neck, this scene is different.
At the party, Kai was the first to stand on Tony's side and even explained to everyone why Tony had created Ultron.
Therefore, the Avengers this time expressed understanding toward Tony.
The more they said it wasn't his fault, the more Tony blamed himself. After all—that's Tony's personality.
Hearing Kai's words of comfort, Tony took a deep breath, then feigned nonchalance.
"Don't worry, I'm not that fragile. I'll find Ultron, and then we'll take him down together! But before that, Kai, could you please take care of Pepper?"
"No problem!"
Kai was about to speak when he suddenly turned his head to look at the corridor.
A figure moved with incredible speed and appeared in the corridor. The next second Wanda and Pietro were standing in front of him.
"Kai, what's wrong?"
Seeing Kai turn his head as if looking at something, Tony asked worriedly, "Damn it, are we being attacked by superhumans again?"
"Pretty much. Someone has indeed come knocking on our door."
After hanging up the phone, Kai looked at Wanda and Pietro who had appeared and spread his hands. "Oh, did they come to us willingly?"
"Ultron wants to destroy all of humanity, Kai! Pietro and I can't find anyone else!" Wanda said, her voice trembling as she looked at Kai.
A dozen minutes later, in front of the Sokovia church.
"Your speed isn't good either!" Kai joked with a smile as he watched Pietro arrive late. "If you had come a little later, I might have finished a whole bowl of noodles!"
Pietro shrugged. "Could you put Wanda down first?"
Pietro already knew he wasn't as fast as Kai; otherwise he wouldn't have let Kai carry Wanda and arrive first while he chased after them.
Kai placed Wanda—who was being carried in a princess carry and had her arms around his neck—on the ground and looked at the church.
"Ultron is right here. Wanda, Pietro, you two try to evacuate the crowd in Sokovia first. I'll stall Ultron. The rest of the Avengers are on their way too. Another big battle is about to begin. This is troublesome…"
Wanda and Pietro nodded, then left. Kai stepped into the church.
Inside the church, Ultron stood in the center looking up at the ceiling.
After Kai walked in, Ultron turned to look at him. "This world is really beautiful, isn't it? But—"
Before Ultron could finish speaking, Kai instantly appeared beside him. With a dazzling flash of light beneath his feet, he kicked heavily toward Ultron.
"Bang!"
Ultron was kicked more than ten meters away, crashing through the church wall and standing in mid-air.
"You're still so rude, you won't even wait for me to finish speaking!"
As he spoke, the Mind Stone embedded in Ultron's forehead fired a beam of light at Kai.
Kai did not hesitate to activate the Reality Stone to meet Ultron head-on. The power of the two Infinity Stones collided and instantly leveled the entire church.
As the church was destroyed, a dense army of steel soldiers flew in from all directions.
Standing in the air, Ultron looked at Kai.
"Even if Pietro used his speed to help Wanda evacuate the people around him, how are you going to deal with my Iron Legion by yourself?"
"Tsk, that's scary…" Kai leaped into the air, crossed his arms in front of his shoulders, and dazzling light particles kept appearing. "The Eight-Foot Jade Curved Jewel!"
Countless dazzling photons flew toward Ultron's steel legion.
A deafening explosion resounded all around, destroying many of the legions.
Ultron charged toward Kai once again, his vibranium body withstanding the attack.
Each time the Mind Stone's beam struck Kai, it was neutralized by Reality Stone energy.
A dazzling fingertip flashed and swiftly pierced the Mind Stone embedded in Ultron's forehead.
"Na Zhenjin's body is indeed a bit difficult to deal with!" Kai said as he dodged Ultron's beam and kicked Ultron hard with his right foot.
Speed is equal to weight. As they clashed, the area surrounding the church was instantly destroyed.
Ultron was extremely powerful with the Mind Stone, but Kai—wielding the Reality Stone—was not to be underestimated.
Ultron lifted a boulder weighing hundreds of kilograms and hurled it at him.
Kai instantly kicked the boulder to pieces; the dazzling flash of his fingertips pierced toward Ultron.
He closed in, stepping on light, and delivered a powerful kick.
"Bang!"
After kicking Ultron away again, Kai arrived at the church ruins. Using the Reality Stone, he pulled Ultron's device out of the ground.
They were about to destroy it to prevent Sokovia from being launched into the air—but Kai realized something was wrong.
The area beneath the device was empty; there was no sign of thrusters.
Ultron hadn't built the device in Sokovia as originally planned. The device was a decoy—designed to attract the Avengers and divert their attention.
"You don't actually think I'd build the device here in Sokovia as originally planned, do you?" Kai observed as he casually shattered the device.
Ultron slowly landed in front of Kai. "Someone told me that if I launched Sokovia as originally planned, all my plans would fail.
I think he makes a lot of sense—especially now that the Avengers have you as a variable, a variable that can stop me."
Kai's expression turned serious and his Observation Haki released to its maximum. Sure enough, beneath the device there really was no system that could take off.
"So, you know that Wanda and Pietro chose to betray you," Kai said.
"And you deliberately let Wanda see that you would launch Sokovia into the air and then destroy humanity, in order to deceive her into finding us?"
"That's right." Ultron did not hide anything. "Although I did not believe him at first, only when all of humanity is destroyed and only metal remains on Earth—only then can the world be safer and more beautiful.
For this reason, I had no choice but to lie to Wanda and make her believe that I had set up a propulsion device in Sokovia.
In hindsight, everything I did was right. Today is the deadline for the destruction of humanity!"
"Can you tell me who that person is?" Kai asked.
"I don't know, to be honest—I don't know who he is!" Ultron replied. "He's a very mysterious guy. I couldn't even see his face using the Mind Stone. I just feel—"
Kai didn't waste any words and instantly vanished in photon form.
"You're leaving already? I haven't finished speaking!" Ultron shrugged as Kai disappeared, then chased after the direction Kai had taken.
A few streets away, Pietro and Wanda were using their abilities to evacuate civilians from Sokovia.
Seeing Kai appear before him in an instant, Pietro was about to speak when Kai said in a serious tone.
"Pietro, you and Wanda go to the Avengers immediately and tell them that Ultron's plan in Sokovia is fake. Tell them to find the real target as soon as possible."
As he spoke, Kai handed the specially made communicator to the two men.
"Press it three times and the Avengers will lock onto your locations. I'll hold Ultron back—give him no time to disable the device!"
Wanda and Pietro exchanged glances but didn't ask for specifics. They quickly disappeared down the street.
Kai turned and looked at Ultron, who was already leading a large group of steel legions in pursuit.
He clasped his hands together, and the dazzling Kusanagi Sword appeared in his grasp. His body rose into the air.
"Looks like I'll have to get serious this time…"
Hundreds of kilometers away, Wanda pressed the device Kai gave her three times.
A dozen minutes later, the Quinjet fighter jet slowly descended from the sky. Wanda and Pietro appeared before the group.
"The Flash said that everything in Sokovia was a decoy, and the real device wasn't in Sokovia!" Wanda said rapidly.
Tony Stark, dressed in his armor, told her to slow down. Wanda, taking a deep breath, repeated Kai's message. Tony and Steve exchanged a glance.
"Oh no, the area has suddenly expanded!"
Aboard the Quinjet, Tony took out his computer and began operating it, instructing Friday to activate all of Stark Industries' and his personal satellites to begin the search.
Jarvis hadn't fully recovered yet; Tony was using Friday, the AI. Natasha took out her phone and contacted Nick Fury.
Although S.H.I.E.L.D. had seemingly collapsed, Fury still had at least a dozen satellites at his disposal.
Canyon area of Yellowstone National Park.
The canyon stretched for hundreds of miles and attracted millions of tourists a year. Looking down into it, a tour group of a thousand people admired the scenery.
A man dressed in a black robe stood on the hilltop beside Ultron's ground-based launch device.
"Feel sorry…" he whispered to the thousand-person group below, hesitated for a few seconds, then resolutely pressed the button.
A surge of powerful energy spread down the mountainside. The once-intact mountain cracked. Huge boulders rolled with thunderous roars.
The dense jungle split apart. One by one, towering trees fell and the rushing waterfall began to flow backward.
On the ground, the canyon began to rise into the air.
The tour group, thinking it was an earthquake, panicked—then realized the ground beneath their feet was lifting and screamed in terror.
The Quinjet sped toward Yellowstone. Seeing the ground rise tens of meters, Tony piloted his armor off the Quinjet. "Start scanning on Friday!"
"Sir, the core magnetic field created with vibranium can bind the land together. There are tour groups of thousands in the rising canyon, and Yellowstone has hundreds of thousands of visitors registered today," Friday reported.
"Shooting it down from its current altitude would kill hundreds of thousands. If allowed to fly higher and land, it would destroy the world!"
Tony piloted his armor to the rising canyon floor. The Quinjet landed and the Avengers hurried out.
"Steve, there's a tour group of a thousand people over there. We need to figure out how to rescue them first."
"Then we need a way to make the rising canyon disintegrate in mid-air…"
Before Tony could finish, the man in black robes slowly descended in front of the Avengers using a special energy technique. His face was covered by a layer of black mist.
Tony frowned. "And who are you?"
"A man who has lost everything!" the man replied, waving his hand to summon a magical teleportation array that transported Steve Rogers, Natasha, and Barton to another location.
Tony reacted quickly and pulled Dr. Banner aside to avoid the danger. The man in black waved his hand and the teleportation array shut down.
"Damn it, what exactly did you do, you magician who doesn't even dare to show your face?" Tony barked.
He fired a palm-mounted energy cannon, but the man in black crossed his arms and summoned a magical shield.
Hulk transformed and charged, but the man in black cast an illusion and his body multiplied into hundreds of figures.
Black magic lines bound Hulk. Tony told Wanda and Pietro to rescue the thousand-person tour group.
The man in black didn't panic when Tony rushed in; he cast Mirror Dimension magic and trapped Tony in mirror space.
Inside that space, Tony saw mirror-images of himself at different ages: a child assembling a hard drive, a playboy with a model—reflections of his life.
"Damn, are you secretly in love with me?" Tony quipped as he attacked the mirrors. His attacks vanished into nothing.
The man in black's voice echoed in the mirror space. "Tony Stark, honestly, I really admire everything you've done."
"Really? So you pulled this trick to express your crush on me?" Tony shot back.
He withdrew his attack to examine the mirrors. When he touched one, it shattered into countless sharp shards.
Outside, Hulk—bound by magical lines—roared. The chains broke and he smashed stones around, shattering many of the illusions.
The man in black cast another spell, but a rumbling sound came from the sky and Thor's lightning struck. The illusion magic shattered.
Hulk charged and slammed the man in black into the air.
Tony, still in the mirror space, watched. He charged and burst out of the mirror magic, armor scratched. "Fuck, this damn magic trick!"
The entire space tilted and began to distort. Collapsing mountains appeared and energy thrusters were exposed above.
Rolling stones flew upward and branches spread on either side. Hulk, confused, looked around.
Tony scanned the area. "I didn't expect this magician to know geometry."
Ahead, a black-robed man fought Thor with flashy magic. Tony fired a palm energy cannon that bent and hit the man in black. "Ha, I knew it!" Tony said as the man stumbled.
Friday reported the ground had already risen to three thousand meters.
Tony told Thor, "Find a way inside this flying ground and wait for my signal. Once you receive it, destroy the energy device—or billions will die today!"
Thor glared at the man in black and flew toward a dozen energy thrusters above, hammer in hand.
Hulk punched the man in black and sent him flying.
Tony launched miniature missiles from his shoulder, using geometric principles to continuously attack the man in black.
In the dense forests of Sokovia, Kai and Ultron fought.
Ultron's vibranium body was badly damaged—exposed wires crackled, and his voice altered.
Kai's Reality Stone could distort vibranium into other materials, and he pressed on.
"Right now, I don't want anything else—I just want to pry the gem from your head!" Kai said.
Ultron, looking at the lush trees, said, "This world is truly beautiful, but it will perish sooner or later because of you humans.
The guy who allied with me has a lot of stories to tell, but unfortunately I won't live to see the end of them!"
Ultron rushed toward Kai with Mind Gem energy as Kai unleashed the Reality Stone.
The combined energies destroyed the dense forest. Trees split; mountains trembled. Smoke and dust billowed everywhere.
Holding Ultron's head, Kai's fingertips flashed and the Reality Stone activated. With a muffled crack, Kai forcefully pried the intact Mind Gem off.
Ultron's metallic body gradually turned gray. Kai picked up a severed finger from Ultron's vibranium body and used the Reality Gem to transform it into the shape of a ring.
He embedded the Mind Gem into the ring. Powerful energy filled his entire body.
After supporting the flow of this energy with his physical strength, Kai gained control of the Mind Gem.
The ring on his left hand was the Reality Gem; the ring on his right hand was the Mind Gem.
With a thought, Kai could activate two powerful energies. It seemed that if he wanted, he could easily destroy the world.
He suppressed his surging emotions. "Forget it—destroying the world is too boring, too troublesome…"
Seeing the surrounding forest completely destroyed, Kai took out his phone.
Tony had Friday send him a message and his location during the fight. "Yellowstone Park? The guy in the black robe who does magic tricks? Who is this guy?"
Kai transformed into light particles and disappeared.
On the space carrier, Steve Rogers asked through his headset, "Wanda, have you found the thousand-person tour group in the rising canyon?"
"Pietro and I have gathered them in the southeast corner. Tony and Hulk are fighting that man in black!" Wanda replied.
Steve breathed a slight sigh of relief. "Wanda, the escape pod will be lowered soon. Get these people evacuated!"
"Receive!"
Wanda used crimson magic to control the screaming creatures. Pietro watched as the screams stopped and glanced at the slowly rising space carrier.
"This is S.H.I.E.L.D.? We heard Strucker mock S.H.I.E.L.D. more than once when we were with Hydra!" Pietro said.
Wanda chuckled. "Let's save them first."
Life pods took off from the carrier. Falcon Sam and Rhodes flew over in gear to help transport the people freed from Wanda's control.
On the battlefield, after the distorted space returned to reality, the man in black robes looked into the distance and finally shook his head.
"What, are you surrendering, you magician?" Tony aimed his palm energy cannon at the man and said with a serious, mocking expression.
"If you want to surrender, you'd better dispel that black mist on your face. Are you too scared to show your face?"
The man in black looked at Tony. "I heard from Ultron that you personally recruited that Flash, and that he's the person you trust the most?"
"That's right. Do you have any thoughts?"
"Honestly, Tony, I really envy you. Maybe you two can change everything in the future."
"Don't call me Tony—we're not that close!" Tony snapped.
The man in black's gaze fell upon Tony's worn armor. He remained silent for a few seconds, then cast a spell and vanished. Dazzling particles of light appeared in front of Tony.
Seeing that familiar pale yellow-striped suit, Tony dropped his fighting stance.
"Wow, you've come at just the right time. You scared away all the magicians who were supposed to be doing our tricks!"
"A magician? What does he look like?" Kai asked, remembering that Strange was still a doctor in the timeline and shouldn't be here.
"I don't know. The magician's face was covered with a thick black fog, and even Friday couldn't make out what he looked like," Tony reported through his headset.
Steve said they had already taken the tour groups aboard Nick Fury's spaceship.
Tony told Hulk on the ground, "Hey, big guy, the sun's almost setting. There's someone over there to sing you a lullaby."
Hulk clenched his fist, grunted twice, and sped off toward the Helicarrier.
"Thor, you can now wield the hammer that symbolizes your dominion over Asgard!" Tony told Thor with a shrug. "It's been a long day."
On the space carrier, seeing Hulk jump up, the crowd—whose magical control had been broken by Wanda—screamed.
Hulk, who had been clenching his fists, looked like a child who had done something wrong. He took a few steps back and stood there, momentarily at a loss.
Thor raised his hammer, summoned lightning, and slammed it down on the device controlling the thrusters' ascent.
Energy spread outward; with a series of rumbling sounds the flying canyon cracked open.
The ground, having lost its thrusters and risen, shattered into countless pieces and began to fall.
Thor dodged the debris and flew toward the carrier.
"Honestly, you two did a great job!" Kai said as he sat and watched the canyon crumble.
He peeled an orange, broke it into three segments, and gave two halves to Wanda and Pietro.
Wanda accepted an orange; Pietro hesitated before spreading his hands. "This wasn't our intention!" he said.
"Forget it, none of that matters anymore!" Kai patted the seats, gesturing for them to sit next to him.
"The space carrier is about to descend. If you don't want to be blown off by the airflow, fasten your seatbelts!"
Wanda and Pietro exchanged a glance, sat, and fastened their seatbelts.
"So sour?" Pietro frowned as he ate the orange Kai offered him.
"You'll get used to it!" Kai smiled and leaned back in his chair.
Wanda put an orange in her mouth and after a moment asked the question that had been bothering her.
"Kai, why did you let me and Pietro go twice?"
"Is there a reason?" Kai asked.
"Of course!" Wanda pressed.
"All this fighting is so troublesome…" Kai tossed the last segment of orange into his mouth.
Wanda was skeptical, but seeing Tony and Thor land on the Helicarrier calmed her.
Sitting next to Kai, she felt strangely comfortable, as if his aura had infected her. She simply couldn't read his thoughts.
"Hey, big guy, where are you going? You're going the wrong way. The person who sings you lullabies is inside the mothership," Tony called, seeing Hulk walking toward the Quinjet with his head down.
Hulk continued aboard the Quinjet and it took off. Tony opened his armor visor and looked at Kai.
"Don't look at me like that. That metal flying machine is too slow—just like your metal shell. I'm too lazy to learn how to pilot that thing!"
"Pepper is very angry about your 'departure without saying goodbye' once again," Kai said.
"Perhaps after you go back this time, you'll have to take out the diamond ring you've been preparing for so long!"
Tony stared wide-eyed. "Damn it, how did you know I'd been preparing the diamond ring for a long time?"
"Happy said it!"
"F**K—once we get back, I'll demote him from his position as head of the security department!"
"Tsk, poor Happy."
