Chapter 436: The Quaking Toad
The narrow victory over Inteleon was a wake-up call. It proved that while Kenji
and his team had reached incredible heights of power, they were still prone to
the strategic traps of veterans who had decades of experience.
Mega Gyarados had won, but its performance was raw and aggressive, while
Inteleon and Lawson had moved with a calculated, surgical grace. In the
high-tier world of Pokémon battling, power was the engine, but experience was
the steering wheel.
"Hahaha! Truly impressive, young man," Lawson laughed, his voice booming across
the arena with genuine admiration. "Few trainers in the history of this League
have ever managed to tank a point-blank Lethal Snipe and stay standing. Your
Gyarados is a monster among monsters."
Among the Elite Four, Lawson was easily the most professional. While the others
were often looking for an excuse to retire, Lawson took his role as a gatekeeper
seriously. Seeing a new generation capable of such feats didn't make him
jealous; it made him proud.
Kenji didn't feel like a winner, though. He felt a lingering sense of shame for
almost "throwing" the match by underestimating a Level 99 opponent. Lawson,
misinterpreting Kenji's serious expression as humble modesty, only liked the kid
more.
The old man offered to change the arena. The central island was a pile of
floating rubble, and while that didn't bother a Water-type specialist, it was a
major disadvantage for anyone else. Kenji politely declined, but Lawson insisted
on a fresh start. A new, pristine stage rose into place.
After a thirty-minute intermission, the battle resumed.
"Go! Pelipper!" Lawson shouted, immediately re-establishing his weather core.
"I'm counting on you! Electivire!"
"BO-QIA!"
As the Electivire roared, the clouds above the new stadium darkened, and a
rhythmic downpour began to lash its fur, sending sparks flying as the water hit
its electrified body.
"Come back, Pelipper." Lawson knew better than to leave a Water/Flying type out
against the Thunder Tyrant. He immediately recalled the bird and threw his next
ball.
"Crush them! Seismitoad!"
"CHAN-CHU!"
A large, sapphire-blue toad landed on the field. It was far from "pretty," its
body covered in vibrating, bulbous lumps that hummed with a low-frequency
frequency. It uncurled a long, wet tongue and looked at Electivire with a dull,
almost lazy expression.
[Pokémon Status]
Target: Seismitoad (Lawson's) Gender: Female Level: 98 Type: Ground / Water
Ability: Swift Swim Potential: S-
Kenji wasn't surprised. Lawson was a master; he wasn't going to let an
Electric-type run wild without a Ground-type counter waiting in the wings.
"BO-QIA…" Electivire cracked its knuckles, its eyes narrowed in focus.
"Electivire! Thunder Armor!"
The Pokémon slammed its fists against its chest. High-density electricity
erupted from its core, wrapping around its body in a jagged, golden cage. While
Seismitoad was immune to Electric attacks, the Thunder Armor still provided a
massive boost to Electivire's raw physical speed and defensive resilience.
Seismitoad looked at the lightning with pure mockery. It had spent its entire
life dismantling Electric-types that thought they were clever.
"Electivire! Trailblaze!"
"BO-QIA!"
Electivire launched forward, its movements light and rhythmic. Trailblaze was
one of the few Grass-type moves Electivire could master. It used a low-profile
dash to close the distance, aiming a series of kicks at the toad's center of
mass.
Because Seismitoad was 4x weak to Grass, Lawson couldn't afford to be careless.
Despite the toad's bulky appearance, it moved with surprising agility. It raised
its thick forearms, the lumps on its skin vibrating violently.
THUD!
Electivire's foot struck the toad's wrist. The soft, rubbery lumps acted like
biological shock absorbers, dispersing the kinetic energy of the kick.
Suddenly, Seismitoad swung a massive, wet fist down toward Electivire's head.
Mega Punch!
THOOM!
Electivire crossed its arms to block, but the force was staggering. The lumps on
Seismitoad's hand acted like miniature boosters, vibrating at a frequency that
amplified the impact force by several orders of magnitude.
The Thunder Tyrant was nearly driven into the dirt. It performed a desperate
roll to the side, trying to regain its footing.
Immediately, Seismitoad began to glow with a veil of high-pressure water. It
became a living projectile, hurtling toward Electivire.
Liquidation!
WHOOSH!
Electivire didn't dare take a direct hit from a vibration-amplified Liquidation.
"Electivire! Dig!"
The golden brute dived headfirst into the arena floor, vanishing beneath the
rock.
"Earthquake!" Lawson commanded.
Seismitoad didn't wait for Electivire to resurface. It grabbed the edge of the
hole Electivire had made and slammed its massive palms into the ground.
BOOM!
The entire arena buckled. Electivire was forced to burst out of the ground
early, narrowly avoiding being crushed by the tectonic shift.
The moment its head broke the surface, Seismitoad was waiting. It didn't throw a
punch this time. It unhinged its massive jaw and released a concentrated,
high-frequency sound wave.
Supersonic!
"CHAN-CHUUUUUU!"
The waves tore through the Thunder Armor, vibrating Electivire's inner ear.
Kenji's heart sank. Electivire wasn't wearing any CC-removal items like
Silvermere Dawn for this match.
The Pokémon's eyes glazed over as confusion took hold. Seeing the opening,
Seismitoad delivered a heavy, stomping kick to its solar plexus.
Bulldoze!
BOOM!
"BO-QIA!" Electivire shrieked in pain as it was launched backward. The impact of
the Ground-type move was massive, nearly shattering its armor. However, the
sheer physical trauma of the kick actually helped it snap out of the confusion.
"Electivire! Thunder God's Arena!"
"BO-QIAAAAA!"
Enough was enough. Electivire stood up, its eyes burning with a golden light. It
funneled every drop of its remaining reserves into its ultimate dimension.
"Stop it! Mega Punch!" Lawson shouted.
Seismitoad lunged, its massive fist aimed at the pillar of lightning surrounding
Electivire. But the moment its hand hit the golden light, it felt like striking
a solid steel wall. The energy was so dense it actually repelled the 98-level
Ground-type.
THOOM!
A grid of lightning pillars erupted from the sky, locking the two Pokémon in a
confined, high-voltage space.
Seismitoad looked around dismissively at first, but then it paused. It looked
up.
The rain had stopped.
The Thunder God's Arena functioned as a localized reality. The heavy downpour
that fueled Seismitoad's Swift Swim ability was being vaporized by the
high-frequency electricity before it could even enter the arena.
The toad's speed plummeted instantly.
On the other side, Electivire opened its eyes. Its pupils were no longer black;
they were brilliant, glowing gold—a manifestation of the "Thunder Sea."
"BO-QIA!"
It vanished.
Too fast! Seismitoad thought. Without its speed boost, it couldn't even track
the golden blur.
BOOM!
Electivire appeared at its flank, delivering a point-blank Trailblaze.
"CHAN-CHUUU!"
The toad shrieked. A 4x effective hit from a stat-boosted Electivire was
catastrophic. It tried to turn, but Electivire was already behind it.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
It was a one-sided slaughter. Inside the Arena, Electivire was a god. It used
Seismitoad as a glorified punching bag, raining down Grass-type strikes until
the massive toad couldn't even keep its eyes open.
THUD.
The Seismitoad collapsed, its body covered in bruises and its energy depleted.
Electivire deactivated the Arena, the golden light fading from its eyes. It
stood tall, though it was visibly drained. It looked at the fallen toad with a
mix of pride and lingering exhaustion. It had won, but the cost to its internal
"batteries" had been immense.
