It was now the exact same level as Rainey's own Ace, Froslass.

Li Xisheng was a titan, but his misfortune was drawing Zhurong Xun in the Top 6. It was a matchup that almost certainly meant his journey would end here.
Even the other four finalists—Kenji, Elder Venom, and Hu Ren—were anomalies. The sheer density of power in this year's tournament had the sitting Elite Four feeling an unprecedented amount of pressure. On the field, seeing his opponent bring out his final Ace, Zhurong Xun slowly raised his hand, pointing his Poké Ball at his Talonflame.

Having recalled the bird, Xun reached for a unique ball at his waist. It was the color of a guttering coal, deep and dark, and embossed above the release button was the glowing red Sacred Flame Totem of the Zhurong Clan.
As the cameras zoomed in, the audience held its breath. Everyone knew what this meant. This was Xun's ultimate partner—a Pokémon that had been baptized in the Sacred Fire and received the Blessing of Ho-Oh.
Pokémon blessed by the Rainbow Wing were whispered to be equals to Legendary Pokémon in terms of raw elemental purity and combat presence.
"Go forth!!! Houndoom!!!"

Xun hurled the ball. A streak of red light shot into the center of the arena.
Despite being a Fire-type, the moment the Pokémon materialized, the temperature in the stadium didn't rise—it dropped. A bone-chilling, eerie cold washed over the field, reaching all the way to Li Xisheng in the trainer's box.
The light shattered, revealing a Houndoom.
But it was a Houndoom from a nightmare. Its body was a pitch-black so deep it seemed to absorb the stadium lights. Its eyes were a haunting, dark purple. The white, bone-like structures covering its body and the horns on its head were riddled with jagged, glowing cracks.
From within those cracks, a bizarre purple flame ebbed and flowed like liquid. Looking at it was like staring into the abyss; this fire didn't feel like a product of the natural world, but something dragged from the banks of the River Styx.
Houndoom opened its maw, a small puff of purple fire escaping its throat as its dark eyes locked onto Mega Gallade.

"Consume all in the funeral pyre of the void! Master of the Underworld! Houndoom! Mega Evolve!!!"
Xun gripped the Key Stone in his palm. It erupted with a violet, blinding radiance, mirrored by the Mega Stone on Houndoom's chest.
KRA-KOOM!!!! —
The evolution energy exploded. The temperature plummeted further, hitting a literal freezing point. As the white light faded, Mega Houndoom stood tall.
The bone-like armor on its body had expanded, forming a massive, rib-like cage over its torso. Its tail had split into a wicked, three-pronged fork, and its claws had turned the color of fresh blood. Its horns now pointed straight toward the heavens like demonic spears.
The cracks in its "bone" armor remained, but now, the purple fire was overflowing. It dripped from the cracks like liquid light, splashing onto the arena floor.
Wherever the purple "Netherfire" touched the ground, it didn't extinguish. Even without fuel, it began to spread with unnatural speed, catching the very air. Within seconds, a ring of ghostly purple flames surrounded Mega Houndoom.
It looked like a reaper of souls that had just stepped through a rift from the afterlife. The fire emitted a low, vibrating hum that sounded like thousands of distant, agonized wails.
Typing-wise, Mega Gallade (Fighting) had the advantage over Mega Houndoom (Dark).
But in terms of presence, Mega Gallade was being utterly crushed. The "type advantage" felt like a joke in the face of such overwhelming, malevolent power.

The sonic wave hit like a physical wall, the sheer vibration shattering the illusions of Mega Gallade instantly.

All dozens of clones dissipated into nothingness. But as the smoke cleared, the audience gasped.
None of the clones had been the real body! Mega Gallade was nowhere to be seen!!
