Chapter 38 - ch37

The Secret Behind the Key

The rest of the party drove Jay crazy.

Every time she looked at Keifer, she remembered the balcony, Alexa, and the mysterious silver key.

And every single time she tried to bring it up, he changed the subject.

By the end of the night, she was convinced he was doing it on purpose.

Back at the Internship Residence

The moment they walked through the door, Jay spun around.

"Okay. Talk."

Keifer blinked innocently.

"About what?"

Jay grabbed a cushion and threw it at him.

He caught it effortlessly.

"The key, Watson."

"Oh."

"The balcony conversation."

"Oh."

"Alexa."

"…Oh."

Jay pointed dramatically.

"START EXPLAINING."

Keifer laughed.

"You're adorable when you're suspicious."

"I am two seconds away from violence."

"Noted."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the silver key.

Jay crossed her arms.

"So?"

"So," he said, "come with me."

The Drive

Thirty minutes later, they were in a car driving through the city.

Jay looked out the window.

"Are you kidnapping me?"

"Technically you're coming willingly."

"That's not a no."

He grinned.

She rolled her eyes.

Eventually the car stopped near the waterfront.

The area was quiet.

Most of the city lights reflected across the water.

Jay frowned.

"What are we doing here?"

Keifer stepped out first.

"Come on."

The Building

They stopped in front of a small renovated building.

It wasn't flashy.

It wasn't corporate.

It looked warm.

Personal.

Almost… familiar.

Jay stared at it.

"What is this?"

Keifer held up the silver key.

"This."

He unlocked the door.

The Surprise

Inside, the lights flickered on.

Jay froze.

The room was beautiful.

Bookshelves lined one wall.

Large windows overlooked the water.

Comfortable furniture filled the space.

Plants sat near the corners.

And on the far wall was a framed blueprint.

A blueprint with a name on it.

The Mariano Foundation Leadership Center.

Jay stared.

Then stared again.

Then looked at Keifer.

"What is this?"

His smile softened.

"It's yours."

Jay's brain completely stopped working.

"…What?"

"It's a project I've been planning for months."

She blinked.

Months?

Keifer walked toward the blueprint.

"You always talk about helping young entrepreneurs."

Jay swallowed.

"You remember that?"

He gave her a look.

"I remember everything."

Her heart immediately betrayed her.

He continued.

"You wanted a place where students could learn leadership and business without needing powerful family connections."

Jay looked back at the room.

Slowly, details started connecting.

The books.

The design.

The location.

Everything reflected conversations she'd had over the years.

Things she'd mentioned casually.

Things she thought nobody remembered.

But Keifer had.

Every single one.

"You built this?" she whispered.

He nodded.

"Well… mostly planned it."

Jay looked speechless.

For once.

Actually speechless.

Keifer laughed softly.

"Wow."

"What?"

"I think this is the first time I've ever won an argument so hard you can't talk."

She smacked his arm.

Automatically.

Then she looked around again.

Her eyes started watering.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

"Oh no," Keifer said immediately.

"What?"

"Are you crying?"

"No."

"Jay."

"No."

"You're literally crying."

"I'm not."

"You are."

She glared at him.

He grinned.

Then his expression softened.

"I just wanted you to have something that belonged to you."

Jay's chest tightened.

"Keifer…"

"No board members."

He stepped closer.

"No family expectations."

Closer.

"No company politics."

Closer.

"Just your dream."

For a moment neither spoke.

The city lights shimmered through the windows.

The water reflected against the ceiling.

Everything felt quiet.

Safe.

Finally Jay whispered,

"You remembered all of that?"

He smiled.

"You're my favorite person, Jay."

Her heart practically exploded.

She laughed through her tears.

"You're such an idiot."

"Your idiot."

Jay shook her head.

Then smiled.

"Yeah."

For perhaps the thousandth time in their lives—

And the first time without hesitation—

"You're my idiot."

Outside, the city continued moving.

Inside, for a little while, it was just them.

No rumors.

No expectations.

No headlines.

Just Jay, Keifer, and a future that suddenly felt a little less frightening. ✨❤️
