Chapter 37 - ch 36

The Party – Jay Gets Suspicious

A week after their quiet weekend escape, the internship program hosted another huge corporate party — this one celebrating a new international partnership. The ballroom was louder than usual, music mixing with conversations and the clinking of glasses.

Jay walked in beside Keifer, looking composed in a sleek black dress, while he wore a dark suit that made him look far too confident for someone who loved annoying her.

"Remember," Jay muttered quietly, "tonight is networking. No chaos."

Keifer smirked. "You say that like chaos isn't my brand."

She gave him a warning look. "I mean it."

He raised his hands innocently. "Fine. Professional Keifer mode activated."

Jay rolled her eyes but smiled slightly.

Something Feels Off

At first, everything seemed normal.

Executives greeted them. Interns mingled. Ryan appeared with two drinks and dramatic gossip.

But after about twenty minutes, Jay noticed something strange.

Keifer was gone.

She frowned, scanning the room. He had been right next to her moments ago, joking about the terrible jazz band.

"Ryan," she said slowly, "where did Keifer go?"

Ryan looked around. "He was just here."

Jay's stomach twisted slightly. "Exactly."

She tried to ignore it. He probably just went to talk to someone.

But ten minutes passed.

Then fifteen.

Jay checked the room again — and suddenly spotted him across the ballroom near the balcony doors.

He was talking to someone.

Alexa.

Jay's eyes narrowed.

The two of them were standing close, speaking quietly. Alexa leaned toward him, saying something Jay couldn't hear.

Jay's chest tightened.

Why does this look secretive?

Ryan noticed her expression. "Uh oh."

"What?"

"You're doing the murder stare."

Jay crossed her arms. "I'm not."

"You are absolutely imagining throwing someone off that balcony."

She ignored him and kept watching.

Keifer rubbed the back of his neck — something he did when he was stressed — while Alexa spoke again.

Then Alexa handed him something small.

Jay's suspicion meter exploded.

"What did she just give him?" Jay whispered.

Ryan leaned forward dramatically. "Maybe it's a love letter."

Jay's head snapped toward him. "Not helping."

The Suspicion Grows

Keifer looked around the room quickly — almost like he was checking if anyone was watching.

Jay's eyebrows shot up.

"Okay," she muttered. "That's suspicious."

Ryan nodded. "That's definitely suspicious."

Jay marched toward them before she could overthink it.

But the moment she reached the balcony doors…

Alexa walked away.

Keifer turned — and immediately froze when he saw Jay standing there.

"Hey," he said carefully.

Jay tilted her head. "Hey."

Silence.

Then she asked very calmly:

"What were you two talking about?"

Keifer blinked once. "…Work stuff."

Jay raised an eyebrow.

"Work stuff," she repeated slowly.

"Yeah."

She crossed her arms. "Work stuff that requires whispering on a balcony?"

He scratched the back of his neck again.

"Jay—"

"And work stuff that involves her handing you something?" she added.

Keifer's eyes widened slightly. "You saw that?"

"Hard to miss."

Ryan, watching from across the room, whispered to himself,

"Oh this is going to be good."

The Tension

Keifer hesitated.

And that hesitation made Jay even more suspicious.

Her voice softened — but it was the dangerous kind of soft.

"Keifer… what's going on?"

He sighed.

"…It's not what you think."

Jay sighed too. "That sentence never ends well."

He looked around the room, lowering his voice.

"I was going to tell you later."

"Tell me what?"

He opened his hand.

Inside was a small silver key.

Jay frowned. "A key?"

Keifer nodded slowly.

Jay's suspicion turned into confusion.

"…Okay now I'm even more confused."

He exhaled.

"It's for something I've been working on."

Jay stared at him.

"You're being weird."

"Yeah," he admitted.

Ryan wandered over casually. "Should I bring popcorn?"

Jay glared. "Leave."

Ryan left immediately.

Keifer looked back at Jay.

"I promise," he said quietly, "it's nothing bad."

She studied him for a long moment.

"…Fine," she said slowly. "But you're explaining everything later."

He smiled slightly. "Deal."

Jay turned to walk back inside — but she still glanced over her shoulder once.

Because something about the situation still felt mysterious.

And Jay Mariano did not like mysteries involving her boyfriend.

If you want, the next scene can reveal what Keifer is secretly planning, and it can go in a few directions:

1️⃣ A romantic surprise for Jay

2️⃣ A business opportunity he's preparing for her

3️⃣ Someone trying to manipulate Keifer and create drama

4️⃣ A huge twist that shocks Jay
