Chapter 939 - Rest Beneath the Ocean

The accelerated pace of the construction work and the constant management of the cultivation sectors finally gave way to a well-deserved break. With the rotation system operating autonomously and the hydrostatic vacuum storage buildings properly equipped with runes, I declared a day of absolute rest for the local workers and our group.

We put the tools aside and headed toward the commercial districts of the underwater capital. Walking through the central avenues without the pressure of war reports or the urgency of harvest spreadsheets brought a lightness that I had not experienced in a long time. The flow of water around us seemed gentler, carrying the distant sounds of shell-made string instruments that echoed through the mother-of-pearl squares.

The central market of the Fish-Men Kingdom was a spectacle of exotic colors and aromas. Unlike the noisy markets on the surface, negotiations there took place in a moderate, almost musical tone of voice. Stalls carved into coral reefs displayed goods that would challenge the imagination of any inhabitant of the mainland: luminescent fabrics that changed color according to the temperature of the water, jewelry carved from abyssal black pearls, and salty spices that floated inside small containment bubbles.

Lyannis pulled my arm enthusiastically, pointing toward a tent decorated with long ribbons of silver algae. "Look at that, Takumi. Those fabrics look like they're made of pure starlight bottled up. I can't wait to see how the tailors on the surface would react to something like that."

I approached the stall with her, observing the fine texture of the material that slipped between my fingers like flowing water. I bought a long roll of the silver fabric for Lyannis, who thanked me with a radiant smile and a quick kiss on the cheek, causing some of the local merchants to smile at the scene.

A little farther ahead, Elara and Liriel were inspecting a section dedicated to ancient scrolls written on the leather of sea creatures. Even Liriel's assistant, free from her technical note-taking duties, looked enchanted by the small hydrostatic protection amulets on display.

"The cuisine here also deserves our attention," Elara commented, pointing toward a tavern carved inside an immense petrified nautilus shell, from which came a peculiar and inviting aroma.

We entered the establishment and settled at a large circular table made of treated floating wood. The menu consisted entirely of delicacies from the depths: fish smoked with aromatic algae, squid skewers marinated in citrus herbs from the deep sea, and a refreshing, effervescent drink that caused a slight tingling on the tongue, extracted from bioluminescent fruits.

Rai'kanna devoured the first skewer with obvious approval, wiping her lips with the back of her hand. "The meat is firm and the seasoning is completely different from anything we have in the surface forests. I could easily get used to this peaceful routine, Takumi."

Scarlett and Vespera, sitting side by side, finally seemed to have lowered their constant guard posture. Scarlett kept her arms resting on the table, laughing at an exaggerated story Lyannis was telling about the merchants of the capital, while Vespera savored the effervescent drink with a relaxed expression, allowing herself a rare moment of tranquility away from perimeter patrols.

After the meal, we moved away from the bustle of the market and walked toward the city's public gardens, an immense preservation area where the rarest and oldest corals in the kingdom grew without commercial interference. We sat on a polished stone bench, watching the golden reflection of the protective dome gently swaying far above our heads, imitating the starry sky of the surface.

Rai'kanna rested her head on my shoulder, intertwining her fingers with mine, while Lyannis cuddled up on my other side, sharing the warmth of physical closeness in that underwater environment. Liriel and Elara sat right in front of us, watching the silent dance of a school of luminous fish crossing the garden.

"You know, Takumi..." Liriel began in a gentle, reflective voice. "When we came here, I thought it would only be a strategic logistics mission. But seeing the smiles of those children in the market and the peace of this place makes me realize what we are truly defending."

Her words echoed deeply in my mind. I looked around, contemplating the imposing architecture, the citizens who walked without fear, and the serene faces of the women who had chosen to fight alongside me against the darkness threatening the world.

I realized, with overwhelming clarity, that this underwater kingdom was no longer merely a military support base or an administrative territory on my campaign map. It had definitively become an extension of my own home, a sacred place that I would protect with my own life against the forces of the Demon King. The chapter of rest ended there, strengthening our bond and renewing our spiritual strength for the challenges that would inevitably come next.
