He looked at the memorial field.
"Five hundred sixty markers," he said. "I don't name my dead. I never have." He paused. "I've been thinking about whether I should start."
He walked to the gate.
He stopped.
"One more thing," he said. "The child. The one born last month."
"Yes," Satou said.
"Temporal awareness at birth," Volcanus said. "I heard through the council's communication network." He paused. "That's unprecedented."
"Yes," Satou said.
"Good," Volcanus said. "Something unprecedented in the realm is usually interesting. Usually expensive. But interesting." He looked at Satou. "Make sure it's the good kind of interesting."
He left.
He left without taking anything from the visit except what he'd come to confirm.
