Unlike Emma's fullness, fair complexion, and strength, Ruth's figure was lighter, more delicate, and slender. Equally restrained were her personality and desires, so much so that when Lübeck held her in his arms, he couldn't tell if she was satisfied with what he offered.
"Want more?" Lübeck whispered softly in her ear.
"It's already dawn. Do you still want to?" Ruth replied softly.
"Whenever you want, I'm always ready," Lübeck had barely finished speaking when he realized he spent nearly half his time away from his family. Feeling a pang of guilt, he added, "As long as I'm by your side, I'll always be there to meet your needs."
Ruth turned her head slightly and smiled. Her eyes were so deep and captivating. She said nothing, only gently caressing Lübeck's arms wrapped around her body.
Gazing through the window at the faint reddish-purple glow of dawn, Ruth turned her head slightly and asked,
Did you go see the place where we grew up when you went back?
"No, why do you ask?"
I feel a bit homesick, though maybe it's not really homesickness—just that feeling of being homesick. Perhaps it's just the feeling I had when I lived there.
"I'm right here with you," Lü Beck said, wrapping one arm tightly around her waist while stroking her shoulder with the other hand to comfort her.
"There's no religious persecution here, no infectious diseases, no war or oppression—isn't that a good thing?" Lübeck asked her casually.
"Yes, if only my hometown could be like this," she said, a smile playing on her lips as she nestled closer into Lübeck's embrace.
Just then, the sound of the orderly's carriage arriving could be heard on the path outside the small courtyard.
"Wait here for me," Lübeck told Ruth before putting on his coat, stepping out of the house and small courtyard, and onto the road. He pulled a folded document from his pocket and handed it to the orderly, saying,
Give this to Trudy. It's a crew roster for upcoming voyages. Please have Trudy notify everyone on this list to take leave and return home to prepare for imminent deployment.
"Yes, sir," the orderly replied, taking the documents and stowing them away. He then saluted, climbed into the carriage, and was about to drive off when—
Oh, right—tell Trudy to let everyone on the list know that if they have family matters preventing them from leaving, they can request time off.
I can arrange for someone else to go. Also, send a car to pick me up for Joachim's funeral.
"Yes, sir,"
Turning back into the house, Lübeck found the earlier warmth had vanished. The Ruth he'd been longing for was already dressed, preparing food with Emma. Seeing Lübeck return, she merely glanced at him, a smile playing at the corners of her mouth as she entered the kitchen—as if mocking him? Emma, however, was less reserved. The moment she saw Lübeck that morning, she threw herself into a big hug. Captivated by her warmth, Lübeck lifted her up, her feet leaving the ground, and as he set her down, he playfully pinched her plump little butt. Emma's face seemed to be thoroughly enjoying it.
"You're all busy, so I'll go check on the kids," Lü Beck said.
"Go ahead then. Actually, there's no need—he's asleep. Just go take a look," Emma said, shaking Lübeck a little longer before letting go.
Lübeck entered Emma's room and saw his son sleeping in his cradle. The baby's small hands and cheeks were as smooth and translucent as white jade. Gazing at this tiny life newly arrived in the world, Lübeck couldn't help but recall the storms he'd weathered throughout his own life. To make ends meet, he'd worked as a laborer, tried his hand at business, then found employment at a shipyard. Later, when war came, he enlisted in the navy.
After a life of constant upheaval, Lü Beck finally had a child of his own. He didn't want his son to endure the same hardships he had faced. Yet looking at this boy, he knew that to grow into a true man, he was destined to weather storms.
Watching the child sleep soundly, Lübeck leaned back against the bedside, his hand resting on the mattress. The quilt still seemed to hold the lingering warmth of Emma's sleep, and her voice, her face, her form seemed to flicker before his eyes. He hesitated for a moment, then left the room.
In the kitchen, Ruth and Emma had already warmed the food in the pot. The two women stood chatting idly by the stove. Lübeck walked up behind them, positioning himself between them. He wrapped his arms around both their waists, glancing from one to the other with a satisfied look on his face, gently swaying their bodies back and forth.
"What, you're not watching the kids? Then I'll go," Emma's voice rang out crisp and clear.
Ruth was shaken so violently she could barely stand. Her frail frame uttered a single word.
"I'll go instead," she said with a laugh before walking away. It was unclear whether she was laughing at her own frail frame that couldn't stand steady, or at Lübeck's flirtatious advances—first toward her that morning, and now toward Emma.
Watching Ruth's retreating figure, he withdrew his gaze. Before him stood the vibrant Emma, barely nineteen years old—almost young enough to be his daughter. This, he realized, was one of the perks of being the leader of this sanctuary. Otherwise, how could such a young woman show him such favor?
As the war situation gradually deteriorated, Lübeck obeyed military orders and began this work. Clearly, across the dimensions of time and space, the outcome of that war no longer mattered. Yet the organization that had consistently issued commands to him remained, and the plan continued. He simply had no idea where the orders originated or who was issuing them. All he could do was obey.
Emma's large eyes sparkled with life, Lübeck wrapped one arm tightly around her waist, pulling her close against him, while his other hand rested on her chest, gently caressing her through her shirt. Emma slowly closed her eyes, her slightly parted lips beginning to pant. The firelight cast a glow on the white shirt sleeve draped over her shoulder and her fair cheek, tinged with a faint blush.
As she stroked him, Lübeck gently pinched her fingers around him—already swollen and taut, with milk seeping through her shirt. Emma didn't know yet.
"Can I have some too?" Lübeck asked, lifting her shirt.
Emma opened her eyes, glanced at her chest, then looked at him, pouting her little lips as she said,
You may only have one; save that one for the child.
With her permission, Lübeck wrapped one arm tightly around Emma's waist and the other around her shoulders and back, burying his head in her embrace. Yet it felt more like Lübeck was massaging Emma's breasts with his lips—far from relieving the pressure, it only made them grow firmer and fuller.
Emma, who had been resting her hands on Lübeck's waist, now cupped his cheeks and asked,
What are you doing? Did you get any?
"Hmm," Lübeck searched his memory of the scene just now, trying to answer whether he had eaten the question.
"How big do you think your son's mouth is?" Emma asked, watching Lübeck's bewildered expression.
"Are you trying to stuff it all in your mouth?" Emma said, pushing Lübeck's head back with both hands until his lips could only hold the areola inside his mouth.
At that moment, the child seemed to have woken up and was fussing a bit in the room. Ruth was carrying him out to find his mother. She looked down at the child as she passed through the doorway, then looked up into the living room and saw Lübeck and Emma over by the kitchen.
Lübeck heard the sound and turned his head slightly, just catching sight of Ruth walking toward him with the baby in her arms. She flashed him a grin, then turned and headed back the way she came, soothing the child while murmuring to herself.
Little Lübeck, don't worry, Mommy will be right back to feed you, okay?" she said as she walked back to Emma's room.
"Alright, why don't you come learn from your son?" Emma chuckled as she gently pushed Lübeck aside and headed back inside.
Lübeck didn't follow them. Instead, he realized he didn't have much time left to spend with this mother and child. Watching Emma's retreating figure, he decided to do whatever he could for them. He extinguished the stove fire, carried each breakfast dish to the table, set it out, and covered them with bowls. That way, when Emma came out after feeding the baby, the food would be just the right temperature for breakfast.
