Chapter 54 - Hero Clans and Demons

Nate turned his gaze toward Basara — already feeling the weird predictability of explaining supernatural politics to someone from another world.

"So… these Hero Clans?" he asked.

Basara exhaled, bracing himself.

"Yeah," he said, stepping back slightly as if preparing a lecture.

"The Hero Clan is an ancient lineage of warriors blessed by the gods to combat demons."

He crossed his arms, eyes serious.

"My father was a legendary Hero they called him the War God back in the village."

Nate nodded thoughtfully.

"So they caused trouble here in Kyoto as well?"

Basara's expression turned flat.

"More like… disruptions. They've been tracking demons, hunters, and now they're poking at things they shouldn't."

He glanced at Maria and Mio. "They don't trust demons naturally and our history with demons people makes things tense."

Nate's eyes narrowed.

Then a wave of ZZ-rank Yokai pressure pressed down on Basara and both of the Naruse girls at once a presence sharp and heavy enough to freeze a battlefield.

Nate didn't flinch.

"They're making problems in my territory… to my Yokai," he said quietly. "I can't let that slide."

Mio's eyes went wide.

"Nate… you're not human, are you?"

Nate shook his head with a calm shrug.

"No. I am human," he said matter-of-fact, no drama. "just one raised alongside Yokai."

He met their eyes steadily.

"I am Nate Adam," he announced.

"Son of Lily Adams. This generation's Seer."

Mio blinked, slowly connecting dots.

"So… you're the child of prophecy."

Nate nodded once.

"And more than that," he continued, raising his hand calmly, "I'm the Yokai King. This is my wife, daughter of Yasaka, Kunou, the Yokai Queen."

The room went quiet for a moment.

Maria's jaw slowly dropped, eyes sparkling with both fear and excitement.

Basara just stared.

"…Right. So you're basically tied into every faction now."

Nate gave a small smile calm, confident, not boastful.

"I guess you could say that."

Kunou then spoke. "Now, by what I can gather, they have no reason to attack the Yokai, so why are they".

Mio looked at her. "We know that Modern Yokai are more civil and harmless".

Nate chuckled as she muttered under his breath. "Try and tell Shuten Douji that, she might flip".

Mio didn't hear that part. "But, because the Hero Clan's still believe in the old Legends".

The room temperature dropped.

Kunou and Nate spoke at once, Powers flaring. "What".

The word legends hadn't even finished echoing before the air changed.

The pressure wasn't violent it was authoritative.

Kunou's tails flared outward, gold light licking along their edges. Nate's presence deepened, spirit energy rolling low and heavy like an approaching storm. The room didn't shake.

It submitted.

"What," Kunou repeated, voice calm but sharp enough to cut steel.

Nate didn't raise his voice. That made it worse.

"Explain that," he said.

Mio swallowed.

Maria felt it immediately this wasn't demon pressure, wasn't hero killing intent. This was something older. Heavier. The kind of presence you didn't fight… you answered.

"The Hero Clan," Mio said carefully, choosing each word like it might explode, "still teaches the old stories. The ones from before the Great War fully ended. Yokai as monsters. Beasts. Calamities that need to be erased before they rise again."

Kunou's ears twitched. Her eyes burned.

"And you know that isn't true," she said.

Mio nodded quickly. "Yes. We do. Basara does. I do. Maria does. But the elders"

She hesitated.

"They don't care about truth. They care about precedent."

Nate exhaled slowly.

Inside his head: Of course they do.

"So this isn't about crimes," Nate said. "Not about territory. Not about attacks."

He looked straight at Basara.

"It's about fear."

Basara clenched his fists. "…Yeah."

Nate's spirit pressure sharpened not wider, not louder. Just focused.

"Then let me be very clear," Nate said. "If a Hero Clan member lays a hand on a Yokai in Kyoto without cause"

Golden light flickered in his eyes.

"I won't treat them as heroes."

The implication hung there, cold and absolute.

Kunou stepped closer to him, her hand slipping into his without hesitation.

"As Yokai Queen," she added, "I will not allow my people to be hunted over bedtime stories."

Maria shifted nervously. "…You're going to confront them, aren't you?"

Nate smiled.

Not cruel.

Not amused.

Certain.

"Oh no," he said. "They're going to confront me."

Outside, Kyoto's spiritual currents stirred.

Somewhere far away, Hero Clan elders felt something they hadn't felt in generations.

A warning.

And for the first time, the old legends were no longer looking down at Yokai

They were looking up.

Kunou then spoke again. "I actually have a question to ask, your Demon?".

Mio blinked. "…That's actually a really good question."

She glanced at Maria, then back at Kunou. "Short version? Devils and Demons come from different roots, even if people mix them up."

Kunou tilted her head slightly, listening closely.

Mio continued, calmer now. "Devils like Rias, Sona, Sirzechs they descend from the 72 Pillars. The Pillars were shaped by Lucifer and Lilith, and their bloodlines became what we now call Devils. Noble houses, reincarnation systems, peerages, all of that."

She gestured vaguely, as if outlining a structure in the air. "Order. Hierarchy. Contracts."

Maria chimed in, nodding. "Very… bureaucratic."

Nate snorted quietly. "That tracks."

Mio then placed a hand over her chest. "Demons are different. We come from Satan directly. Not the Devil Kings the Satan. Older myths. Older power. Less structure."

Her expression darkened slightly. "More instinct. More raw authority. And fewer rules."

Kunou's eyes narrowed, thoughtful. "So Devils are… refined descendants."

"And Demons are," Nate finished, "closer to the source."

Mio looked at him sharply. "…Yeah. Exactly."

There was a brief silence.

Then Kunou asked the obvious follow-up.

"Then why do the Hero Clans treat Demons and Devils differently?"

Mio hesitated.

"Because Devils rewrote history after the Great War," she said honestly. "They built a system. Diplomacy. Ratings. Politics. Demons didn't."

Maria crossed her arms. "And because Satan vanished."

That landed heavy.

Nate's gaze sharpened. "Vanished," he repeated. "Not dead."

Mio shook her head. "No one knows. Some say sealed. Some say erased. Some say asleep."

Kunou squeezed Nate's hand slightly. "Which means…"

"The Hero Clans don't see Demons as part of the 'new world order,'" Nate said. "They see you as leftovers from the old one."

Basara muttered, bitter, "And leftovers are easier to justify killing."

The room went quiet again.

Kunou's tails slowly settled, but the fire in her eyes didn't fade.

"That thinking," she said softly, "is going to get them burned."

Nate nodded once.

"Good thing," he said, voice steady, "this era belongs to people who don't live by old myths anymore."

Kunou tilted her head, ears twitching. "So… Lucifer and Satan are different people. What are they to each other?"

Nate answered without hesitation, memory lining up cleanly. "Satan was Lucifer's right hand."

Everyone in the room stilled.

He continued, voice steady. "Back before the Great War, Lucifer ruled as the Light Bringer. Satan wasn't a ruler in name he was the enforcer, the King of Wrath. Where Lucifer commanded, Satan executed."

Mio's eyes widened slightly, then she nodded. "That's right."

Nate went on. "After Satan vanished, the Devils didn't let his name disappear. They couldn't. So when the Underworld restructured, they created the title 'The Four Satans' not because they were Satan, but to keep his authority alive."

Kunou's tails swayed slowly as she processed it.

"That's why," Nate added, "there's no 'Satan' family name among the Four. Unlike Lucifer, Leviathan, Beelzebub, and Asmodeus, Satan wasn't a bloodline. He was a singular existence."

Mio folded her arms, impressed. "Most devils don't even know that. They just repeat the title without understanding it."

Maria muttered, "Typical."

Kunou looked thoughtful. "So the Devils rule in his name… but Demons are closer to what Satan actually was."

"Yes," Mio said quietly. "That's why Hero Clans are afraid of us. Devils can be negotiated with. Demons… remind them of a time when power didn't ask permission."

Basara frowned. "And the Yokai?"

Nate smiled faintly. "We never cared about their labels to begin with."

That earned a short, surprised laugh from Mio.

Kunou squeezed Nate's hand. "Then this Nexus Era Mother talked about… it's not just coincidence, is it?"

Nate's eyes hardened slightly. "No. Spirits awakening. Hero Clans moving. Devils reorganizing. Demons resurfacing. And Yokai unifying."

He looked at Basara, then Mio, then Maria.

"Old pillars are cracking. And everyone who was pushed into the shadows is stepping forward at the same time."

Mio swallowed. "Which means conflict."

Nate nodded once. "Or a reset."

Kunou smiled sharp, confident.

"And this time, we decide what survives."

Meanwhile with the Black Wings.

The space they stood in did not exist on any map.

A vast void stretched in every direction, layered with translucent streams of light—past, present, and futures bleeding into one another like overlapping tides. Some currents flowed smoothly. Others were frayed, snapping and reforming as if reality itself were struggling to keep pace.

Mckraken stood at the center, massive and still, his eyes fixed on the shifting currents of time.

"So," he rumbled, voice like pressure deep beneath the sea, "it has started."

Dame Dedtime floated beside him.

"Yes," she said calmly. "The Nexus Era has truly begun. Too many anchors are active now. Fate can no longer correct itself quietly."

Mazera leaned against nothing at all, arms crossed. "Red Dragon. White Dragon. Spirits. Hero Clans. The Prophecy Child."

He said quiltly. "All on the same board, in the same generation. Even the blind could see it."

Shinigami stood apart from them, hood low, the outline of a scythe barely visible behind him. His voice carried no emotion—only certainty.

"The Overseer has opened one of his eyes."

The void shifted.

Several timelines collapsed instantly, erased like chalk from a board.

Shinigami continued. "Not fully awake. But aware. That alone changes the rules."

Mckraken's grin widened, slow and predatory. "Good. I was getting bored watching from outside the current."

Dame Dedtime tilted her head. "Our move, then?"

Mazera's eyes gleamed. "Finally."

Mckraken raised one claw, and the tides of time bent inward, forming two distinct silhouettes within the streams—one elegant and deadly, the other vast and corpse-like.

"I'll call Jorōgumo," he said. "She excels at weaving chaos where destiny thinks it's safe."

"And Ghoulfather," he added, voice darkening. "Let him stir the dead paths. Panic spreads faster when the past starts walking again."

Shinigami nodded once. "Careful. If we move too loudly, the Yokai King will notice."

Mckraken chuckled. "Oh, I hope he does."

Dame Dedtime smiled thinly. "This era won't be decided by strength alone."

Mazera finished the thought. "But by who understands the board first."

Far away unseen, unfelt the current twisted again.

And somewhere in Kyoto, fate quietly tightened its grip.

Back in the Underworld.

The Gremory estate was in chaos.

Not loud chaos no explosions, no screaming but the far worse kind: administrative panic.

Zeoticus Gremory stood in front of Runeas with both hands pressed to his face, already regretting every life choice that led him here.

"Ancestor," he said slowly, carefully, like one wrong word might summon Lucifer himself,

"you cannot just enroll in Y Academy for fun."

Runeas Gremory sat on the edge of a table, legs crossed, wearing the Kuoh Academy uniform like it had always belonged to her. She was sipping tea that no one remembered serving.

She blinked once.

"…Why not?"

Venelana choked on her breath.

Sirzechs pinched the bridge of his nose. "Because you're a Primordial Devil, the First Gremory, a being personally created by Lucifer and Lilith. Your presence alone destabilizes social, political, and metaphysical balance."

Runeas tilted her head. "That sounds like a you problem."

Zeoticus groaned. "This is exactly what I mean."

Runeas stood up, hands clasped behind her back, eyes sparkling with genuine curiosity.

"I slept through centuries. I wake up, and suddenly the world is interesting again. Spirits walking openly. Hero Clans resurfacing. The Red and White Dragons active. And"

She leaned forward slightly, smile sharp.

"a Yokai King born in the same era as all of it."

Rias stiffened. "…You want to see Nate Adam."

Runeas snapped her fingers. "Prophecy Child. Yokai King. Nexus Era trigger."

She looked pleased. "I would be irresponsible not to observe him firsthand."

Sirzechs sighed. "You don't need to enroll in a human-supernatural academy to do that."

Runeas looked at him flatly. "Yes, I do."

"…Why?"

"Because," she said simply, "that's where he actually lives his life. Not in thrones. Not in councils. Not in prophecies."

She smiled, softer now. "Power reveals itself best in routine."

Venelana hesitated. "Even if we allowed this… your power would be impossible to hide."

Runeas waved a hand. "Please. I invented half the concealment techniques you still use."

She paused, then added, amused, "Badly, I might add. I'll fix a few while I'm there."

Zeoticus slumped into a chair. "This is a nightmare."

Rias looked between them, conflicted. "Ancestor… what exactly are you planning?"

Runeas's eyes gleamed.

"Nothing dramatic," she said.

"I'll attend classes. Make friends. Observe the Prophecy Child."

A beat.

"…And maybe steal him if he's interesting."

The room went dead silent.

Sirzechs slowly turned. "You will do what?"

Runeas smiled sweetly.

"Oh relax," she said. "I said maybe."

Somewhere, far away

Nate Adam sneezed.

And the Nexus Era laughed.

Back with Nate.

The living room was quiet in that lazy, end-of-day way.

Nate was sprawled on the couch, one arm resting along the backrest, the other loosely around Kurumu, who was sitting comfortably on his lap with her wings tucked in. The TV was on, some forgettable late-night show playing bright colors, canned laughter, zero relevance to reality-ending prophecies.

Nate stared at the screen.

"…My life is gonna get complicated."

Kurumu blinked and looked up at him. "Huh? That was random."

Nate frowned slightly, rewinding the scene in his head. "Wait… I didn't say that."

Kurumu tilted her head. "You literally just did."

Nate pointed at the TV. "No, I read it. The subtitle popped up."

She glanced back at the screen. There was no subtitle.

Just two sitcom characters arguing about food.

Kurumu slowly looked back at him. "…Nate."

He squinted. "Okay, that's weird. I don't know why I said it out loud though."

Kurumu smiled, resting her head against his chest. "Maybe your future self is complaining again."

Nate sighed. "If that's true, he needs to stop giving spoilers."

She giggled softly. "Too late for that. Your life's been complicated since day one."

Nate smirked. "Fair."

He leaned back, eyes half-lidded, trying to relax.

Somewhere far away—

in the Underworld,

in ancient halls older than devil society itself,

Runeas Gremory was smiling.

And Nate had absolutely no idea why his instincts were screaming.
