The phoenix of fire Raven unleashed flew across the garden, its wings cutting through the air and setting the trees ablaze. Renga braced himself as the inferno flew towards him, his burned lips twisting into a snarl. "Do you think I can't counter a Fire Jutsu?" he shouted, his hands blurring through seals. "Water Style: Torrent Veil Jutsu!"
A massive surge of water erupted from his mouth, colliding with the oncoming flames in an explosion of steam and light. Raven leapt back, the heat licking at her face, the world hissing as the mist swallowed them both. "Do you think my attack is that simple?" she called out, her voice echoing through the smoke.
The fiery bird turned sharply in midair, twisting upwards instead of dying out, wings beating against the choking haze. It circled once, shrieking, its glowing eyes fixed on Renga as if possessed.
Renga's expression faltered. "What the hell is this? How can you control this jutsu? That's impossible!"
Raven's lips curved upward, eyes gleaming faintly. "Not with these eyes, it's not. While you were too busy drugging Hinata's father, I killed a bird and thought I'd test out my puppet control."
His eyes widened as he finally noticed what was hidden within the blaze—a charred red-winged robin's body at the phoenix's core, its wings spread unnaturally wide, animated by Raven's chakra.
Renga stumbled back, horror twisting his features. "No… that's unnatural… how can you control a corpse?"
Then greed overtook his terror. "Those eyes—it's those eyes! I have to have them!"
The phoenix screamed as it dove, crashing into him before his seals could complete.
Raven raised her arm against the blinding flash. "Oops," she said softly, "did I accidentally fill that bird's body with explosive tags?"
The courtyard detonated in a thunderous boom. Stone shattered. The shockwave flung Renga through a wooden wall, where he hit and slid to the ground, leaving a smear of blood behind him. When he rose, half his face was burned away, one eye gone, his breath coming out in wet gasps.
"You bitch," he hissed. "If I can't kill you, then I'll kill Hinata instead. Somebody will come after those eyes!"
He stumbled toward the trembling girl.
"No—Hinata!" Raven shouted, racing forward, chakra flaring at her feet.
"Raven! Please help me, I don't want to die!" Hinata cried, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Renga's scorched hands clamped around the child's shoulders as he began to laugh, the sound raw and broken. "Now I have a hostage," he croaked. "I'm dying anyway, so I'll take her down with me. The Hyūga clan will tear you apart for killing their heiress, Raven—if that's even your real name!"
Raven stopped just short, her Rinnegan eyes glowing in the darkness. "Don't do anything foolish, Renga," she said evenly. "Put Hinata down."
But instead of crying, Hinata began to laugh—quietly at first, then louder.
Renga's one remaining eye flickered in confusion. "What are you laughing about, you little brat? You think this is funny? You're about to die! Say goodbye to your new friend while you can!"
Hinata's laughter grew into a bright, eerie giggle that didn't sound afraid at all.
Then Raven's voice came from behind him, calm and almost amused. "Do you really think this it the real was me this whole time?"
Renga's head jerked around. The Raven standing several yards away watched him silently. "What—?" he stammered.
Poof.
The distant Raven dissolved into a cloud of smoke—a shadow clone.
Renga's heart lurched as realization struck. He looked down at the girl in his hands—her body shifting under his hands, her small form flickering with chakra light. In the next instant, the "Hinata" he was holding transformed, her skin and hair shifting into pale white and violet eyes.
The real Raven stood where Hinata had been, her lips curved slightly, voice sharp and cold. "Shadow Clone Jutsu and Transformation Jutsu," she said softly. "Surprise. I bet you didn't expect that."
His body locked in terror. "No… you—"
Before he could move, her hand shot to her belt. The kunai flashed once in the firelight before it plunged straight into his chest.
The impact drove the air from his lungs. Blood bubbled from his mouth as he stared at her in disbelief. "How… could I have been fooled… by a little girl…" he said.
