Steam still hissed around the courtyard, thick with the scent of blood and scorched stone. Raven's violet eyes shimmered like rippling pools in the moonlight as she stared down the three remaining Chūnin. The air trembled under the pulse of her chakra. She moved suddenly—too fast for their eyes to follow—leaping high into the air, her white hair flaring out behind her like a crown. In the split second of her rotation, she drew an explosive tag from her pouch and slapped it square across the forehead of the nearest shinobi before landing lightly on the shattered tiles behind him.
"Made you look!" she called out, her tone playful, as eyes glittered with dangerous delight.
The man froze, blinking. His trembling fingers pulled off the paper stuck to his skin as he looked at the explosive tag in his hands. "Oh… she did make me look."
A heartbeat later the tag turned bright red. The world flashed white and then Boom. The blast tore the man in half, fire blooming upwards in a column of smoke and blood. For an instant his legs stood up alone, swaying upright before toppling over with a dull slap onto the wet stone ground.
The shockwave ripped across the courtyard. Raven laughed, her hair blowing around in the heat. "Ha-ha-ha-ha! I made you look!"
The two remaining Chūnin stared at what was left of their comrade. One stammered, "She's right… she did make him look."
"Shut up!" the other hissed. "We need to kill her quickly—if the Hyūga come, none of us will survive this!"
They charged together. Raven moved her hand in a blur, drawing two handfuls of senbon—thin, needles that caught the moonlight like liquid silver. Her threw them rapidly; the courtyard filling with the sharp hiss of flying Senbon.
One of the Chūnin sneered as he made hand seals. "Do you think I would actually fall for this?!"
He inhaled deeply. "Fire Style: Blazing Breath Jutsu!"
A torrent of flame burst out from his mouth, flying across the courtyard. The fire consumed the senbon in midair, turning them into streaks of light before they vanished inside the inferno. He smiled, confidently. "Do you think your senbon can survive my fire jutsu?"
Through the blaze came Raven's calm voice. "Do you think my senbon can't? After all, if I coat them with water using chakra, do you think your fire can destroy them?"
The flames glowed and dimmed. The Chūnin's eyes widened as a storm of steam-wet needles reemerged from the dissipating blaze—hundreds of them, glistening with moisture. They tore through the air faster than he could react.
The first pierced his chest. The rest followed like a wave. His body jerked and twisted as dozens of senbon embedded into him from every angle—his neck, legs, skull. He managed one strangled gasp: "Oh… shit—" before collapsing in a wet heap, blood pooling beneath him.
Raven stood motionless amid the smoke, the remaining Chūnin trembling in disbelief. His kunai quivered in his hand as he shouted hoarsely, "Even if we can't complete the mission, I'll take you with me, you little bitch, for killing our team leader and my teammates!"
Raven's gaze locked on him, her voice cold and steady. "Do you truly think you can defeat me? I'm Hinata's new best friend. Nothing will stand in the way of me protecting her."
Far above, hidden within the branches of a large oak, the real Hinata watched from the arms of Raven's shadow clone. The clone's tone was softer, the warmth of its chakra pulsing against Hinata's hands.
"You truly care about me, don't you?" Hinata asked quietly, her voice almost lost in the wind.
The clone smiled faintly. "Of course I care about you. I wouldn't have infiltrated your clan and come here to protect you—and to teach you how to use Water Release—if I didn't. You need to be strong, Hinata. You're the future of your clan."
Hinata's eyes glistened with tears as she whispered, "I've never had a friend before."
The clone chuckled softly. "Hinata, seriously, you need to get out more. But don't worry—we'll fix that together."
