"Wh-why would you tell me that?" Ume exclaimed, annoyance clear in her voice.
Maximilian had revealed to her the only vulnerability he possessed. She would have been better off not knowing it. What if someone read her memories and discovered Maximilian's only secret?
"Now you are the only living person other than my wife who knows my deepest secret," Maximilian replied, his hand moving from her head down to her scarred cheek. His thumb brushed lightly along the old marks, as if they were nothing more than a few stray strands of hair.
"But—"
"By the way, how long have I been unconscious?" he asked, cutting her off mid-sentence.
Ume only gave him a silent stare. She already knew why he had told her about his weakness. He didn't want to cause her worry again, in case he ever suffered a fatal injury in the future like the one he had suffered this time.
