Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: So-So

After no small amount of hardship, Su Luo finally managed to secure victory.

At the very least, he had preserved the dignity a combat consultant ought to have. Only after pinning the girl to the ground did Su Luo finally let out a sigh of relief inside.

Thank goodness he hadn't overturned the cart.

If he'd gotten flattened by some ordinary Valkyrie on his very first day on the job, then he probably wouldn't have had the face to keep staying here.

So… I lost?

Feeling the cold edge of the broken blade pressed to her throat, Durandal's blue eyes trembled slightly. The girl had never imagined that she, too, would one day taste defeat like this.

She didn't try to make excuses for herself.

A loss was a loss.

This combat consultant truly had real ability. Durandal had already brought out her genuine strength, yet the result had still turned out this way. She was not someone who couldn't accept defeat.

It was just that…

how long had it been since she last tasted the feeling of losing?

"Lord Su Luo, you… what exactly is going on here?"

The moment the fight ended, the door to the training room was pushed open. Rita came rushing in with a crowd of Valkyries behind her.

And the instant the girls entered, they all froze on the spot.

Because the scene before them was simply too much to process.

The one lying on the ground, firmly pinned beneath a man…

was Lady Durandal?

Even Rita was momentarily at a loss, let alone the other Valkyries.

What were they supposed to do?

The moment they walked in, they saw a man "bullying" their captain, and instinctively the girls wanted to rush forward and seek justice for her. But the instant they fully registered the identity of that blonde girl, they all stopped in place again.

This was Lady Durandal.

How could someone like her possibly be bullied?

Looking at Durandal like this, every single one of them found it impossible to accept.

This girl was not just anyone.

She was Durandal.

"It's nothing. We just had a simple exchange, that's all. As the combat consultant, I needed to get an initial understanding of your strength. How should I put it… so-so, I guess."

Naturally, Su Luo stepped off Durandal and stood up, putting on a very professional expression. But after he said that, he noticed that the Valkyries were all looking at him with incredibly complicated expressions.

What?

Had he just said something strange?

Why were they looking at him like that?

Su Luo felt there was nothing wrong with what he said. Sure, perhaps there had been just a tiny little bit of exaggeration in it—but he still won, didn't he?

So-so?

That evaluation made Durandal's brow twitch slightly.

Although she had lost to Su Luo just now, that didn't mean she accepted it wholeheartedly. A single victory or defeat could not determine everything. She had been a bit careless just now, and besides, this hadn't been a true life-and-death battle. There were many techniques she simply couldn't use in a sparring match.

To think that one day, she would be evaluated as merely so-so.

What an offense.

The Valkyries of the Immortal Blades were instantly annoyed after hearing Su Luo describe their captain that way. They were just about to step forward and reclaim some dignity for her when Durandal stood up and blocked them with her body.

She didn't need her squad members to speak for her.

The girl had her own pride.

So-so?

She would prove herself.

"It's only so-so, is it? Hello, I'm Durandal, captain of the Immortal Blades. From here on, I look forward to your guidance."

She didn't even bother to tidy up her disheveled hair. Strands of golden hair clung to her face, giving the already gallant girl an oddly charming contrast.

She extended her hand toward Su Luo.

And Su Luo finally caught the meaning of that self-introduction.

Captain of the Immortal Blades…

Ah.

This might have backfired.

Looking at the girl holding out her hand toward him, then at the openly unfriendly looks from the other Valkyries, Su Luo suddenly felt a headache coming on.

On his very first day of work, he had beaten up his direct superior.

And now he had also offended the rest of the Valkyries.

It seemed his path as a consultant was not going to be an easy one.

"Lord Su Luo, this is your room. If there's anything you need, just tell me and I'll buy it for you… Lord Su Luo, are you still worried about what happened earlier? It's alright. Lady Durandal isn't a petty person."

Rita led Su Luo to his dorm room.

The maid had already prepared and arranged everything inside for him. The moment she turned around, she saw the painful expression on Su Luo's face and softly tried to comfort him.

Was he still dwelling on what had happened with Durandal?

There was nothing to be done now. Since it had already happened, the only option left was to face it calmly. Still, Rita herself had never expected Su Luo to actually be able to defeat Durandal.

As expected of Lord Su Luo.

Even Durandal had not been his opponent.

"You're sure she's not petty? I feel like the way she looked at me at the end, she practically wanted to tear me to pieces and eat me. How was I supposed to know she was the captain of your Immortal Blades? I thought she was just some ordinary Valkyrie squad member. On the very first day of work, I pinned my boss to the ground and beat her up. I've got a feeling this job probably won't last much longer."

Flopping down onto the bed the maid had just made for him, Su Luo let out a sigh and complained to Rita.

At the time they parted, he had clearly seen the deep, meaningful look in Durandal's eyes. And the way those Valkyries had looked ready to roll up their sleeves and get justice for her was still fresh in his mind.

It seemed he had offended the entire Immortal Blades—

everyone except Rita.

"It's alright. Lady Durandal is not that kind of person… Besides, don't you still have me? Lord Su Luo, please rest assured. As long as I'm here, any matter can be smoothly resolved."

The maid sat down at the edge of the bed and very naturally reached out to massage Su Luo's head.

By instinct, Su Luo wanted to dodge.

But Rita's skill was simply unfair.

With only a few gentle presses, Su Luo closed his eyes and surrendered himself completely to the comfort. Though he still couldn't remember at all who this maid really was, the way she treated him with such tenderness was honestly hard to withstand.

It gave him the strange feeling that if he relaxed even a little, she would completely win him over.

This maid…

was really good at this.

There's a chance. Rita, huge success!

Watching Su Luo close his eyes and not refuse her, Miss Maid remained outwardly calm as still water. But inside, she was already throwing flowers in celebration.

She refused to believe that she could possibly be inferior to Kiana, that furniture-girl. If Kiana could build a close relationship with Lord Su Luo, then so could she.

In this matter, Rita had no intention of losing.

"Lord Su Luo, speaking of which, you actually managed to defeat Lady Durandal. As expected of you."

The massage continued.

Rita was gently boiling the frog in warm water, praising Su Luo as she went. Though she had always possessed absolute confidence in him deep down, seeing him truly defeat Durandal still left the maid unable to suppress her amazement.

After all—

Durandal was no ordinary person.
