Chapter 523 - Chapter 401

The coalition reached the broken uplands before sunrise, but the darkness had already begun thinning enough for Haotian to see what the Abyss had done to the land.

The old road into the northern basin had once passed between low stone ridges and scattered farming terraces. Months of fighting had erased most of that shape. Sections of the road had been broken open from beneath, leaving long depressions filled with darkened water and the remains of collapsed formation pillars. Trees survived only where the ground rose far enough from the rift contamination to spare their roots, and even there their bark had split under repeated pressure waves. Farther ahead, three elevated shelves of stone formed natural steps descending toward the basin. The demons had converted each shelf into a defensive position and tied them together through a network of buried conduits that fed the rift beyond them.

The rift itself was not the largest opening remaining on Blue Sphere World, but it had become one of the most important.

Its position allowed Abyss forces to reinforce three neighboring sectors without passing through the main stronghold routes. The coalition had already driven the enemy out of the southern and western approaches, yet fresh demonic units kept appearing behind positions that should have been isolated. Formation specialists finally traced the movement to the basin and discovered that the visible rift was only the mouth of a wider reinforcement artery. Three ground anchors stabilized the corridor, each one carrying part of the spatial burden while buried conduits transferred pressure between them. Destroying only one would not close the passage. The remaining two would absorb its load and grow stronger unless the coalition controlled the transfer before severing the network.

That was why the army had not simply bombarded the basin from outside.

The mixed legions were already spreading into position behind Haotian as he examined the terrain.

Alter's twelve-person teams had changed considerably since the first months of the war. They still contained two cultivators from Blue Sphere World, two from Pyrelith, two from Veridian Prime, two from Umbrel Spire, two from Marephoros, and two from Celestara, but the usefulness of those pairings no longer needed to be explained before each engagement. Commanders understood what the combinations were capable of. Soldiers had fought beside partners from the other worlds long enough to recognize movement by posture, weapon angle, breathing rhythm, and the direction of cultivation before an order was ever passed.

Haotian could see that maturity even while the legions waited.

The Pyrelith fighters were not grouped together in a block as living siege weapons. They stood within the mixed teams where their concentrated offensive arts could exploit openings produced by others. Marephoros cultivators were positioned near fighters expected to absorb the first enemy pressure, not because they were merely water users but because their martial inheritance excelled at redistributing momentum, controlling footing, and turning an opponent's committed force away from its intended line. Veridian Prime cultivators had already extended awareness through the soil beneath the coalition formation, mapping unstable sections and hidden cavities while preparing both battlefield restraints and recovery support. Umbrel Spire cultivators remained visible for now, but their spacing showed which side routes they intended to disappear into once the advance began. Celestara fighters watched the upper ridges and the air above the basin instead of staring at the rift itself, prepared to deny demons the vertical routes through which they had repeatedly bypassed ground formations. Blue Sphere cultivators connected the entire structure, maintaining the formations and communication relationships that allowed the different martial systems to function as one army without flattening their differences.

The result looked less spectacular than some of the coalition's early battles.

Haotian preferred it that way.

An army that knew what it was doing did not need every movement announced through enormous displays of power.

He let his awareness extend through the Dao Palace of the Universe without opening its full domain across the battlefield. Space responded through his heart core, allowing him to follow the distortions beneath the three stone shelves and compare them with the physical conduits already mapped by the formation teams. The first anchor lay beneath the western shelf. The second occupied the northern rise directly below the strongest demonic position. The third was farther east, partially concealed beneath a collapsed ridge where the Abyss had deliberately buried most of its structure. All three fed the same rift throat, but the pressure between them was unequal. The northern anchor currently carried the greatest burden. The eastern anchor looked weaker from the surface, yet its spatial relationship ran deeper than the other two and connected to something beyond the basin.

Haotian did not probe that deeper relationship yet.

Their immediate objective remained the artery in front of them.

The first coalition teams began moving as the sky brightened.

They advanced without a single broad line. Blue Sphere elements maintained overlapping formation relationships between the mixed teams while the forward groups separated around broken ground rather than forcing everyone onto the old road. Veridian Prime cultivators identified the portions of the basin where the soil had become hollow beneath the surface, and the units behind them adjusted before anyone stepped onto a section likely to collapse. Marephoros fighters moved across the wetter depressions with practiced balance, their techniques spreading through the water and mud in subtle changes that made the ground more predictable for the allies following them.

The demons allowed the coalition to enter farther than Haotian expected.

That immediately concerned him.

The first enemy movement came from the western ridge, where armored demonic infantry rose from trenches cut into the stone and launched a coordinated attack down the slope. Their opening assault was not intended to destroy the coalition. Heavy weapons struck the ground in sequence, sending overlapping pressure through the broken road while ranged cultivators behind them targeted the teams forced to adjust their footing.

The coalition did not stop.

The Marephoros pairs in the leading teams entered the exchange before the Blue Sphere formation absorbed the full pressure. Their feet settled into the wet ground as their martial arts spread through the impact paths beneath them, not stopping the demonic force outright but taking the straight-line momentum and distributing it laterally through the saturated soil. Mud surged outward along both sides of the formation instead of erupting directly beneath the advancing soldiers. The Blue Sphere cultivators adjusted their formation relationships at the same time, allowing the front teams to widen rather than remain compressed where the demons expected the pressure to catch them.

Umbrel Spire moved through the opening created by that adjustment.

Veil Shroud — Empty Silhouette settled around the first pair as they left the protected center and entered the irregular shadows beneath the western ridge. They did not vanish from reality. Their presence became difficult to hold in perception while the larger battle provided noise, movement, cultivation fluctuations, and broken sightlines for the concealment art to exploit. Silent Flow — Soundless Crossing followed, carrying them through the gaps between pressure strikes without the sudden acceleration that would have announced their route.

The demons on the ridge recognized what they were doing.

Their ranged formation turned toward the side passages instead of continuing to attack the Blue Sphere front.

That was the first sign that the Abyss had also learned from months of fighting.

A broad wave of pale demonic fire rolled across the rocks, not aimed at any specific Umbrel cultivator but intended to remove the darkness and irregular terrain that concealment relied upon. The outer surface of the ridge brightened. Two hidden routes became exposed.

The Umbrel pair did not continue forward merely because their original assignment had been infiltration.

They withdrew before the fire completely stripped their cover, using Silent Flow to return along a different line while one of the Marephoros cultivators below redirected the edge of the demonic pressure away from their landing point. A Pyrelith fighter had already shifted behind them. The moment the enemy ranged formation compressed its attention toward the exposed side route, the Pyrelith cultivator released a narrow offensive technique into the weakened section of its defense.

The strike did not become a wall of uncontrolled flame.

Heat compressed along a short line, struck the formation barrier where three demonic cultivators had shifted too close together, and forced the outer defensive layer inward. The barrier held, but its shape changed enough for the Blue Sphere front to advance another twenty yards before the demons restored it.

Haotian watched the exchange without giving new orders.

The Umbrel pair had been forced back.

The team had still gained ground.

Earlier in the war, some commanders would have judged the infiltration attempt a failure because the assassins had not reached the ridge. Now the entire team treated the forced enemy reaction as part of the attack.

The first demon infantry reached them before the western formation completely reset.

Weapons met across the uneven road.

The fight remained tight enough that wide attacks became more dangerous to allies than enemies. Blue Sphere fighters held the structure of the first collision, taking the demonic charge without letting individual engagements pull them apart. Marephoros martial artists entered alongside them, their blades and forearms meeting committed strikes at angles rather than stopping them head-on. One demonic axe descended toward a Blue Sphere cultivator's shoulder and was intercepted near the haft by a Marephoros fighter who stepped inside the arc, guided the descending force past his own hip, and let the weapon bury itself into wet ground. The Blue Sphere cultivator struck the demon's exposed ribs before the axe could be recovered.

Two Veridian fighters moved behind the next enemy rank.

They did not remain in the rear to heal.

Roots rose through cracks already present in the damaged road, not as enormous vines announcing themselves across the battlefield but as targeted restraints around ankles, weapon shafts, and the edges of broken armor. The demons cut several immediately. Others shifted their footing to avoid being bound and found themselves stepping onto ground the Marephoros cultivators had already made unstable.

The Pyrelith pair attacked when the movement compressed.

The first demon died before he could recover his balance. The second raised a defensive technique in time, but the concentrated heat striking his weapon forced him to abandon it rather than allow the energy to travel into his arms. A Blue Sphere spear entered beneath the discarded guard and pierced through the gap under his breastplate.

The forward team continued without breaking apart.

Haotian followed their timing and recognized pieces of six different martial traditions within less than ten breaths.

He also recognized where one transition had nearly failed.

An Umbrel cultivator returning from the exposed ridge had shifted from Silent Flow into his ordinary footwork half a step too early. The mistake was small enough that most people would never notice it. Haotian saw the change in weight before the man's heel even settled and understood that fatigue from the previous campaigns had weakened the transition. Correcting him now would serve no purpose. The cultivator recovered before an enemy exploited it and adjusted his next step on his own.

Haotian kept the observation.

If the same flaw appeared again, then it would become something worth addressing.

More mixed teams entered the western fight.

The demons changed tactics.

Instead of concentrating pressure on the Blue Sphere formation, they began attacking the relationships between its component groups. Ranged attacks fell behind the leading line, forcing Veridian and Pyrelith pairs to separate from the fighters they were supporting. Another demonic unit descended from the ridge and targeted the Marephoros cultivators specifically, using hooked weapons designed to trap limbs and prevent the short redirections that had repeatedly spoiled heavier attacks.

The enemy had learned exactly where the coalition's strength came from.

They were trying to make six martial traditions fight as six isolated pairs again.

The western commander recognized it and resisted the instinct to tighten the entire formation.

That would have made the enemy's work easier.

Instead, the teams widened.

Blue Sphere connections stretched across larger gaps while preserving communication and formation support. Umbrel cultivators used the new spaces to shift between groups rather than remain attached permanently to one pair. Veridian fighters spread their ground control beneath multiple teams at once, creating routes through which separated allies could return without stepping into the traps the demons were forming. Marephoros cultivators stopped trying to intercept every heavy strike and began allowing some enemy momentum to continue farther than expected, drawing the hooked-weapon fighters out of position before redirecting them.

A Pyrelith cultivator was cut off completely on the western edge.

Three demons forced him away from his partner and kept enough distance between themselves that a concentrated attack against one would leave him open to the others. He did not answer by expanding his fire across all three. His weapon stayed close to his body while he retreated across broken ground, giving them the impression that the isolation had worked.

Haotian could already see what the fighter was waiting for.

A Marephoros cultivator two teams away had begun shifting the water beneath a shallow depression.

The Pyrelith fighter retreated toward it deliberately.

The demons followed.

The first stepped into the wet ground and adjusted immediately when his foot sank farther than expected. The second tried to move around him. The third remained far enough behind to avoid the same trap.

The Marephoros cultivator changed the current under the surface.

The first demon's attempt to recover became lateral movement instead. His shoulder struck the second. Their spacing disappeared for less than a breath.

The isolated Pyrelith cultivator attacked.

The heat of his technique condensed around the edge of his weapon and entered exactly where the two demonic defenses overlapped poorly. One demon lost an arm. The other's chest armor split along the side, allowing the Pyrelith fighter to drive forward before the third enemy reached him.

The third demon never did.

The missing Pyrelith partner appeared from the opposite side and intercepted him.

Haotian allowed his attention to move away from that fight.

The coalition was doing what it had been built to do.

They did not need him to narrate it for them.

The northern shelf became active next.

A heavier demonic formation emerged from behind the ridge and began descending toward the center, supported by large beasts whose forelimbs had been fitted with pieces of formation armor. The creatures struck the ground as they moved, driving pulses through the buried conduit network. The northern anchor answered beneath them.

Haotian felt the spatial burden shift.

The demons were feeding the anchor through the battle itself.

Every impact from the beasts increased the pressure moving toward the rift throat, strengthening the corridor while the coalition fought.

That explained why the enemy had allowed them farther into the basin.

The battle was being used as reinforcement.

Haotian extended the Dao Palace of the Universe deeper through the ground and followed the transfer. The beasts were not creating new power. Their armor was connected to the buried conduits through short-range formation relationships. Each strike converted physical and cultivation force into pressure the anchor could accept.

The coalition could kill the beasts.

The northern anchor would still remain.

Destroying them without controlling the transfer might even release the stored pressure all at once.

Haotian sent the information through the formation network without leaving his position. The central teams changed assignments. Veridian cultivators who had been preparing to restrain the beasts redirected their attention beneath the surface, tracing the physical conduit lines around the northern anchor while Blue Sphere formation specialists began building a temporary receiving pattern behind them. Marephoros fighters moved forward to interfere with the beasts' impacts without stopping them abruptly.

The first creature reached the coalition line.

Its forelimb came down with enough force to break the road across several yards.

A Marephoros Immortal moved into the edge of the impact rather than beneath the limb. His technique entered through the ground a fraction before the strike landed, drawing part of the force into a curved path through the wet basin instead of allowing all of it to travel toward the northern anchor. The road still broke. The formation armor on the beast still flashed.

But the conduit received less.

A second beast struck from another angle.

Two Marephoros cultivators worked together this time, one redirecting the physical shock while the other altered the water beneath the conduit line. The transfer became irregular enough that the northern anchor fluctuated.

The demons noticed.

The formation armor changed.

Instead of sending the next impact directly downward, the beast lowered its head and charged the Marephoros pair.

Celestara entered before it reached them.

The aerial fighters had remained high enough to avoid cluttering the ground formations, but they were not waiting passively for flying enemies. Two descended along different angles, using speed to attack the joints between the beast's armored plates rather than striking the strongest surface from above. The first attack forced the creature to twist. The second landed behind the forelimb it was using to turn and opened a gap wide enough for a Veridian root to drive into the damaged fitting.

The root did not attempt to hold the entire creature.

It expanded inside the armor joint.

The next time the beast tried to place that limb, the formation plate shifted out of alignment.

Its impact reached the ground unevenly.

The conduit beneath it failed to accept the full transfer.

A Blue Sphere specialist marked the change and altered the receiving formation behind the line.

The coalition began siphoning a fraction of the northern anchor's excess burden away from the rift.

Not enough to weaken the corridor yet.

Enough to stop it from growing stronger.

Haotian watched the six-world interaction settle into place and remembered the first versions of some of those techniques.

Marephoros had once taught force control as a contest against the sea. Practitioners learned to yield, redirect, and return pressure because trying to overpower a wave was pointless. Their oldest manuals understood the principle but wasted too much cultivation trying to imitate water rather than applying the movement law beneath it. Haotian had corrected those inefficiencies when he studied their inheritances, separating the martial principle from the unnecessary expenditure that had accumulated through generations of imitation.

Veridian Prime had possessed extraordinary life and terrain arts but had divided them too sharply between healers and combat cultivators. Their roots could save a forest or tear through a battlefield, yet older methods often demanded more growth than the immediate task required. Haotian had taught them to think smaller when smaller was enough. A root entering one broken armor fitting could accomplish more than an entire wall of vines if the target's movement depended on that fitting.

The coalition had carried those corrections farther than manuals ever could.

They had learned what happened when one world's precision arrived exactly where another world's control created the opening.

The Abyss understood enough to fear that cooperation.

It responded with a formation pulse from the northern shelf.

The ground around the mixed teams changed almost instantly. Dark lines spread through the broken road and isolated sections of the battlefield into separate pressure fields. The Blue Sphere formation links strained as the demonic array tried to make every twelve-person team exist within its own confined pocket. Umbrel concealment became harder where the fields brightened the surrounding spiritual environment. Veridian roots slowed when they crossed the boundaries. Marephoros redirection lost range because the pressure fields prevented momentum from traveling naturally through the ground.

The coalition's advance stopped.

For the first time that morning, several mixed teams were forced to fight without the support of neighboring groups.

The demons attacked immediately.

Their earlier attempts to break pairs apart had been preparation for this.

Haotian still did not move.

The formation was strong, but it was not beyond the soldiers trapped inside it.

Blue Sphere cultivators began rebuilding local links first. Instead of trying to restore the full legion network across the pressure barriers, they established smaller relationships within each isolated pocket. The twelve-person teams became complete units unto themselves. Umbrel cultivators abandoned the routes that depended on external shadows and used Veil Shroud closer to their own formations, masking short changes in position rather than attempting deep infiltration. Veridian fighters concentrated their ground control inside the available space. Marephoros martial artists shortened their redirections. Pyrelith fighters reduced the distance over which they needed openings. Celestara cultivators stopped climbing beyond the barrier heights and used the limited vertical space within each pocket to attack from steep, short angles.

They had trained for separation.

Alter had never assumed an enemy would politely allow his mixed teams to remain connected forever.

The first pocket came under pressure from twice its number of demons.

The team did not try to reclaim the lost ground immediately. Blue Sphere fighters narrowed the defensive relationship around the center. Marephoros stood just behind them, catching the heaviest committed attacks and bending enough force away that the front rank could remain upright. Veridian Prime controlled the small amount of ground the enemy had to cross, not attempting to grow past the pressure boundary. Umbrel cultivators worked inside the confusion of close combat, appearing behind individual weapons or beside unguarded legs rather than disappearing into distant darkness. Celestara fighters used short aerial bursts to attack over their allies' shoulders before landing somewhere different each time. Pyrelith waited.

The demons kept pushing.

The team's territory shrank by several yards.

Then the pressure field forced the enemy itself to compress.

Pyrelith attacked.

Two concentrated techniques struck into separate points of the same demonic formation, not large enough to consume the field but precisely placed where the enemy ranks had overlapped. The front broke sideways. Marephoros redirected the collapsing momentum. Veridian restraints entered beneath the exposed footing. Blue Sphere fighters advanced through the gap instead of waiting for the enemy to recover.

The twelve-person team regained everything it had surrendered.

Other pockets followed.

Some handled the isolation less cleanly.

One southern team lost a Celestara cultivator when a demonic spear caught him during a low descent and drove through the side of his abdomen. His partner landed beside him immediately, but the demons recognized the injury and pressed toward the fallen fighter, attempting to force the rest of the team to collapse around their wounded member.

The Veridian pair reached him first.

One stabilized the wound and stopped the worst of the bleeding without trying to restore him fully in the middle of combat. The other turned the ground around his body into a dense lattice of roots that protected him from direct approach while preserving enough open space for extraction. Blue Sphere fighters shifted the local formation rather than abandoning it. The remaining Celestara cultivator stayed on the ground instead of trying to fight alone in the air.

An Umbrel fighter moved through the nearest gap and placed himself where the wounded man's removal would have left the flank exposed.

The team changed shape around the casualty.

It did not stop functioning.

Haotian watched a healer from the second line enter the pocket the moment Blue Sphere specialists weakened one section of the barrier enough to create passage. The injured Celestara cultivator was removed. A replacement from the reserve stepped into the team.

The formation continued.

No one waited for Haotian to save them.

He turned his attention to Lianhua.

She had entered the western shelf with a group assigned to reach the first anchor once the enemy line weakened. Her Virtue Dao remained present around her, but she was not standing behind the assault merely reinforcing morale or stabilizing others. Her sword was already in hand.

The western ridge had become difficult terrain after the Umbrel infiltration failed. Demonic fire continued burning across the upper approaches, while broken stone and overlapping weapon attacks made a direct climb slow enough that the anchor defenders could concentrate against anyone trying it.

Lianhua did not climb directly.

Cloud-Sundering Steps changed the relationship between her movement and the battlefield without becoming a teleportation art. Her first step carried her along the edge of a descending demonic strike, body turning through the space left open by the weapon rather than retreating from it. The second used the slope itself, placing her foot against a fractured section of stone that would have been unstable under an ordinary landing. Her weight transferred and left before the rock completely shifted. The third carried her between two defenders who had prepared for an opponent approaching from below, not someone changing direction through the narrow opening between their attacks.

She never disappeared.

The demons could see her.

They simply kept finding her somewhere their previous movement had made difficult to reach.

A defender on the upper shelf adjusted faster than the others. His hooked blade changed direction in the middle of its descent and swept toward Lianhua's ribs.

She turned her sword through the opening.

The first contact was ordinary steel reinforced by cultivation.

The second was not.

Voidpierce Sword Sutra entered through the blade after Lianhua had already established the physical line. Space shortened the relationship between her edge and the inside of the demon's guard. The technique did not create a giant tear across the battlefield. Her sword simply occupied a path the defender's armor had not actually protected because he had measured distance according to the ordinary space between them.

The edge entered beneath his arm.

Lianhua withdrew before the hook completed its return.

Cloud-Sundering Steps carried her past him and toward the anchor platform while two coalition cultivators finished the wounded defender behind her.

The western anchor became visible beneath the stone.

It was smaller than the formation maps suggested, surrounded by thick conduits descending into the ridge rather than a broad exposed array. Destroying it would be easy for Lianhua.

She did not.

The entire operation depended on controlling the burden first.

She and the formation specialists secured the platform while the mixed teams below prevented reinforcements from reaching it.

The northern pressure fields began weakening at nearly the same time.

Blue Sphere specialists had identified the points where the demonic formation created separation between the teams. Veridian roots, confined earlier to individual pockets, began pressing against those boundary anchors from multiple sides. Marephoros cultivators shifted force through the small cracks that appeared. The moment two pressure fields started interfering with one another, Umbrel fighters crossed the boundary using Silent Flow and attacked the formation cultivators maintaining the separation.

The Abyss tried to restore the network.

Pyrelith did not give it time.

The attacks remained narrow and concentrated, directed at the exposed boundary anchors rather than exploding across friendly positions. One anchor failed. Then another.

The pockets reconnected.

The coalition legion became one formation again.

The demons abandoned the attempt to isolate them and fell back toward the northern shelf.

Haotian felt the rift pressure change immediately.

The northern anchor began drawing more power from the western one.

Lianhua was ready.

The formation specialists beside her opened the temporary bypass they had prepared. Instead of allowing the western anchor's burden to transfer entirely northward, part of it entered the coalition receiving formation and spread through reinforced plates placed along the captured shelf.

The strain hit the specialists hard.

Several dropped to one knee.

Lianhua's Virtue Dao stabilized the group long enough for them to keep the bypass open, supporting concentration and resisting the spiritual pressure spilling from the anchor without pretending to erase the physical strain from their bodies.

The western anchor dimmed.

Haotian shifted his attention east.

That was where Yueru was moving.

The eastern shelf had received fewer coalition forces because its visible defenses were lighter, yet Haotian had distrusted it from the beginning. The anchor there connected more deeply into the rift network, and the demons defending it had spent most of the battle refusing to advance.

Yueru approached with two mixed teams rather than alone.

Purple hair moved behind her as she crossed the broken basin, and the lightning within her cultivation remained controlled rather than spilling around her body. Her martial inheritance came from a faction that had spent generations refining movement under the relationship between storm and wind. Haotian had corrected parts of that inheritance like he had corrected the arts of the other worlds, but the character of the system remained its own.

Stormwind Lightning Step carried Yueru through the first exchange.

Her acceleration did not become a straight flash toward the enemy. Wind changed the line before lightning completed it, allowing her to enter at one angle and leave at another without surrendering balance. A demonic swordsman anticipated the first movement and cut where her path should have ended.

Yueru was already changing speed.

Thunder Riding Wind carried the transition forward instead of forcing her to stop and restart. The altered acceleration took her past the swordsman's prepared range, and her blade met his from the outside.

Thunder Through Blade entered on contact.

The lightning did not leap away in an uncontrolled bolt. It traveled through the relationship between the two weapons, forcing its way into the demon's grip and forearm where his defense had already committed to receiving the sword. His fingers spasmed. His blade dropped several inches.

Yueru's sword passed.

The demon saw the opening and countered immediately, exactly as his training demanded.

Thunderclap Returning Sword turned her weapon back through the line she had just created.

The return was faster than the demon expected because the technique did not require Yueru to rebuild her entire posture before striking again. Her first attack had prepared the second. The blade entered beneath his breastplate and left him falling before the nearest mixed team reached her position.

Yueru did not continue forward alone after the kill.

She slowed long enough for the teams to close around her.

The demons on the eastern shelf responded by targeting the system she had just shown them. Two fighters spread far enough apart to make the changing angles of Stormwind Lightning Step harder to use without exposing Yueru to one of them. A third remained behind them and began releasing interference through the air, disrupting the smooth wind relationships her movement relied upon.

Yueru tested the approach once and withdrew when the opening closed.

The second attempt came differently.

She did not use Stormwind Lightning Step at the beginning.

A Marephoros cultivator entered first, meeting one defender and turning his committed sword away from the central line. A Blue Sphere fighter engaged the second. Veridian roots pressured the third cultivator's footing just enough that he had to divide concentration between the interference technique and the ground beneath him.

Only then did Yueru move.

Stormwind Lightning Step carried her through the space her team had created rather than trying to manufacture that space by itself. Thunder Riding Wind changed her acceleration after the third demon redirected the interference toward her. She reached the eastern anchor platform without needing to defeat every defender personally.

Haotian saw the difference and approved silently.

A martial art became stronger when its practitioner stopped treating it as an answer to every problem.

Yueru had learned that.

Tianlan was fighting above the northern shelf by then.

Two of his Frost Rainbow Falcons worked at different heights while the third remained farther back with the reserve element, conserving strength rather than being forced into constant combat. Tianlan did not maintain a sensory bond with any of them continuously. He used the connection in short intervals, borrowing one bird's perspective when the ridge blocked his sight, releasing it once the information had served its purpose, then returning fully to his own perception.

His spear work had changed over the campaign.

Haotian still remembered the younger Tianlan who tried to overcome every obstacle through direct commitment, turning the spear into proof that he could advance through whatever stood in front of him. The weapon remained aggressive, but the man using it had learned that command changed what counted as victory.

Tianlan was not chasing the strongest aerial demon.

He was keeping the northern shelf from receiving support.

His spear thrust through the wing joint of one descending creature, withdrew before the body could drag him from position, and turned into a horizontal interception against another enemy trying to pass beneath him. Space entered the next step in a short, controlled adjustment that brought him across the demon's line without leaving the battlefield he understood. The Frost Rainbow Falcon above him folded one wing and descended toward a third enemy, forcing it to climb rather than continue toward the anchor.

Tianlan bonded with the lower Falcon for several breaths.

Through its sight, he saw a group of demons approaching behind the ridge.

The bond ended.

His formation changed before those enemies became visible to the soldiers below.

Celestara cultivators shifted west to deny the aerial route. Blue Sphere fighters on the ridge reinforced the northern approach. Pyrelith moved behind the defensive line rather than wasting power attacking targets still out of range.

The hidden demons emerged and found the route prepared.

Tianlan remained above them with his spear, not as an isolated hero but as one part of the structure that had anticipated where they would appear.

The northern anchor lost its beasts soon afterward.

The first died when the damaged formation joint finally failed under repeated Veridian interference. One forelimb collapsed beneath the creature during another attempted impact, and the uneven fall exposed the underside of its armor. Pyrelith concentrated against the opening while Blue Sphere cultivators kept the surrounding demons away. The second beast tried to withdraw toward the anchor and was stopped by Marephoros fighters who redirected its charge across the slope rather than receiving it directly.

The creature struck the ridge sideways.

Celestara descended into the opening.

The northern defense began losing ground.

That was when the Abyss sent the General.

Haotian felt the presence before the demon became visible.

The pressure came through the rift first, heavier than the surrounding commanders and structured enough that Haotian immediately knew the General had not simply emerged as another reinforcement. It had been waiting beyond the throat for the coalition to commit to all three anchors.

The rift widened.

A tall armored figure stepped through carrying a long polearm with a hooked lower blade and a broad upper edge. The weapon resembled the one used by the Rift Marshal Haotian would later face, though the martial character behind it was different. This General did not immediately attack Haotian. Its attention crossed the basin, measured the coalition positions, and settled on the western anchor where Lianhua and the formation specialists were maintaining the bypass.

It understood the operation.

The first attack went toward them.

Haotian moved.

He did not draw a weapon.

Space shortened the distance through the Dao Palace of the Universe while his body crossed the final yards under its own movement. The General's polearm had already descended by the time Haotian entered the line. He raised his forearm against the shaft below the blade rather than trying to stop the cutting edge.

The impact traveled through him.

Haotian changed its relationship before it reached his footing.

The Law of Equilibrium distributed the force through his stance and into the ground without allowing the General's weapon to complete the angle it needed to strike Lianhua behind him. Stone broke beneath Haotian's feet, but his body remained inside the polearm's effective range.

His shoulder entered the General's chest.

The demon moved backward one step.

Haotian followed.

The polearm's lower hook came around toward his ribs. Haotian caught the haft near his hip with one hand, turned with the pull instead of resisting it, and drove his opposite elbow toward the General's weapon arm. The demon released one hand before the joint could be trapped, letting the polearm rotate through the loosened grip and using the movement to strike Haotian with the butt end.

Haotian absorbed the contact against his side and stepped farther inside.

His palm struck the General's breastplate.

The armor held.

The demon still lost ground.

Neither of them wasted time exchanging words.

The General changed its grip and created distance with a short spatial distortion generated by runes along the polearm. Haotian recognized the principle immediately. The weapon did not move faster. It expanded the relationship between its inner and outer reach, turning what should have been a safe position near the haft into the beginning of another cutting line.

Haotian ducked beneath the broad blade as it returned.

His body already understood the martial problem before his thoughts finished naming it.

Alter's Demon God Killing Martial Arts had been built around exactly this kind of opponent: stronger bodies, distorted reach, abnormal joints, divine or demonic force, and weapons whose apparent geometry could not be trusted. Haotian had mastered all eighteen strikes, but mastery did not require announcing a named strike every time one of its principles entered his movement. His feet changed angle. His shoulder dropped beneath the weapon's returning line. One hand contacted the General's wrist while the other struck where armor segments overlapped at the lower ribs.

The impact was short.

The General's torso folded enough to interrupt the next distortion.

Haotian released before the demon could trap his arm.

The polearm came down vertically.

He moved off line by inches rather than yards.

The blade split the ground beside his foot.

Haotian stepped onto the shaft before the General could lift it.

The demon abandoned the weapon with one hand and punched.

Haotian met the forearm with his own, redirected the strike past his head, and drove his knee into the General's thigh. Armor absorbed part of it. The joint beneath did not.

The General twisted away and recovered the polearm.

Behind Haotian, the coalition did not stop fighting to watch.

That was as important as anything he was doing.

The western bypass remained open. Lianhua and the formation specialists continued reducing the first anchor's burden rather than abandoning the operation because a General had appeared. On the eastern shelf, Yueru and the mixed teams secured the third anchor's outer controls. Tianlan kept aerial reinforcements away from the north. Blue Sphere formations pressed forward. Marephoros prevented the demonic counterattack from regaining momentum. Veridian Prime tightened control through the ground. Pyrelith attacks opened the dense enemy formations wherever the other worlds forced them to compress.

The battle continued around Haotian instead of becoming a stage for him.

The General realized that as well.

Its next attacks were no longer aimed only at Haotian.

The polearm struck the ground and sent a distorted spatial line toward the northern anchor, trying to break the coalition specialists working there. Haotian intercepted the relationship with the Dao Palace of the Universe, altering the path enough that the distortion cut through empty stone instead.

The General immediately used the diversion to close distance.

Its shoulder struck Haotian's chest.

Haotian gave ground for the first time.

The demon followed with the lower hook.

Haotian caught the weapon against his forearm and felt the edge break skin before he turned it away. The wound was shallow. He did not ignore it. Blood changed grip, friction, and the reliability of the arm if the same place was struck repeatedly. He altered his guard accordingly, keeping the injured forearm closer to the inside of the weapon rather than presenting it to another cutting line.

The General noticed.

Its next three attacks targeted the same side.

Haotian adjusted through them without pretending the injury did not exist.

The first hook was avoided by changing his stance before the weapon completed its curve. The second forced him to use the opposite palm against the shaft. The third was a feint that turned into a thrust toward his abdomen.

Haotian trapped the shaft between both forearms, rotated with it, and stepped beside the General instead of backward.

His shoulder struck first.

His elbow followed.

Then his palm drove into the damaged lower-rib armor he had already tested earlier.

The plate cracked.

The General finally made a sound, not language but the involuntary release of air from a body receiving force where its defense had failed.

Haotian did not chase the effect recklessly.

He withdrew half a step as the demon's knee rose toward him.

The polearm recovered between them.

The General had learned that close range favored Haotian, so it began using shorter changes in spatial reach rather than broad distortions. The weapon's dangerous distance became difficult to predict from one exchange to the next.

Haotian stopped relying on distance.

The Law of Equilibrium read the conflict between where the weapon appeared to be and where its force actually resolved.

That difference could not be hidden completely.

The next broad blade passed across Haotian's chest.

He moved after the force committed rather than before the image did.

The edge missed.

His hand landed against the General's wrist.

He pulled.

The demon expected resistance and had anchored backward.

Haotian released instead.

The General's own retreat carried its balance farther than intended.

Haotian entered beneath the shoulder and struck the damaged armor again.

The crack widened.

The General responded by driving demonic pressure outward from its body.

This time Haotian could not remain close without taking the full release.

He retreated two steps.

The General used the created distance to turn toward the western shelf once more.

Lianhua was ready for the attack.

Cloud-Sundering Steps carried her away from the direct line while the formation specialists remained behind the temporary protection established around the anchor. She did not flee the platform completely. Her movement curved through the edge of the spatial strike, putting her sword where its relationship could intersect the distortion rather than trying to block the entire attack with raw force.

Voidpierce Sword Sutra entered.

Sword and Space met the General's distorted line at the point where it narrowed toward the anchor.

Lianhua could not overpower a Demon General directly.

She did not need to.

Her strike displaced the line enough that it passed beside the formation specialists instead of through them.

The backlash drove her several steps across the stone and left blood running from her palm where the sword grip tore skin, but the bypass remained intact.

Haotian reached the General before it could attack her again.

His palm struck the cracked breastplate.

The armor broke inward.

The General turned the polearm horizontally, trying to force Haotian away with the entire shaft. Haotian let it contact his side, caught it beneath one arm, and stepped across the demon's front. His hip changed the General's center. His shoulder drove beneath the weapon arm.

The demon was larger.

Haotian still took its balance.

The General struck the ground on one knee.

Haotian's elbow came down against the upper spine before it could rise.

The demon rolled with the force, avoiding the full impact, and swept the lower hook toward Haotian's ankle from the ground.

Haotian lifted his foot, allowed the hook to pass, then stamped down on the haft.

The weapon stopped.

The General released it entirely and surged upward barehanded.

That decision made the next exchange faster.

Its fist came toward Haotian's throat.

Haotian redirected with his injured forearm, felt the cut reopen under the pressure, and answered with the opposite palm against the broken chest armor. The General caught his wrist.

Haotian allowed the grip.

His elbow struck the demon's arm.

The shoulder followed.

The captured wrist rotated through the opening.

The General lost the hold.

Haotian's second palm entered the exposed chest.

The force did not explode outward.

It traveled through the damaged armor and into the body beneath.

The General staggered.

Haotian felt the northern anchor change behind him.

The coalition had begun the second transfer.

The western anchor was nearly empty.

The eastern anchor had been isolated enough that Yueru's formation specialists could prevent it from accepting the full load.

That left the northern anchor carrying more pressure than its current structure could safely sustain.

The General felt it as well.

It abandoned Haotian and tried to reach the northern shelf.

Haotian caught its arm.

The demon turned, using its greater mass to pull him forward while reaching for the fallen polearm with the other hand.

Haotian went with the pull.

His forearm entered beneath the General's elbow.

His body rotated.

The demon's own attempt to move north became the force that turned it away from the shelf.

Haotian drove it into the broken ground.

The General recovered quickly enough to avoid being thrown completely and struck him across the shoulder.

Haotian slid several feet.

The demon reached the polearm.

Tianlan descended from above before it could lift the weapon cleanly.

His spear struck the ground beside the General's hand rather than trying to pierce the stronger cultivator directly. The attack forced the demon to withdraw its fingers or lose them.

Tianlan did not remain.

He used Space in a short adjustment and returned upward before the General's counter could reach him.

One Frost Rainbow Falcon crossed the demon's sight at the same moment.

It was not an attack intended to injure.

It took attention.

Haotian closed the distance again.

The General had been fighting him long enough to recognize the entry and changed its response. Instead of trying to create distance, it stepped forward too.

Their forearms collided.

Haotian felt the demon's weight settle through the contact and recognized an attempt to trap him in a contest of structure while the other hand reached for his injured arm.

He changed the relationship.

Equilibrium did not mean meeting equal force with equal force.

Haotian surrendered the exact point the demon was trying to dominate, allowing his forearm to fold inward while his body moved around the outside of the contact. The General's strength continued into the space Haotian had vacated.

His palm landed beneath its jaw.

The head snapped back.

Haotian struck the broken chest immediately afterward.

The General's footing failed.

A third strike entered the side of the knee Tianlan's diversion had forced it to expose.

The leg bent.

The General tried to stabilize through demonic power.

Haotian denied it the time.

His shoulder drove into the damaged torso while his foot trapped the weakened leg.

The demon fell.

Haotian's palm struck once more before it could rise.

The force entered through the broken armor, passed through the sternum, and disrupted the cultivation circulation behind it.

The General's body stiffened.

Haotian withdrew.

The demon still lived.

It tried to push itself upward with one arm.

Its cultivation failed to answer evenly.

The Law of Equilibrium had not erased its power. Haotian's repeated strikes had damaged the physical and energetic relationships through which that power moved.

The General reached for the polearm again.

Haotian stepped beside the arm and drove his palm down through the exposed line beneath the shoulder.

The body stopped moving.

He remained there only long enough to confirm that the General's cultivation had collapsed beyond recovery.

Then he turned back toward the anchors.

The coalition had not waited for him.

The western anchor had been reduced to a fraction of its previous pressure. Lianhua stood near the formation specialists with her bleeding palm wrapped while she continued supporting their concentration through her Virtue Dao. The eastern team had secured enough of the third anchor's controls to stop the deeper conduit from accepting sudden load. Yueru remained on the platform with her sword drawn, lightning moving through the blade in restrained pulses while the mixed teams around her held the approaches.

The northern anchor was carrying almost everything.

Its structure began to fail.

Haotian extended the Dao Palace of the Universe through the basin and followed the spatial relationships as they tightened. The rift throat reacted to the imbalance by pulling harder on the northern anchor. If the coalition simply destroyed it now, the corridor might tear open wider for several breaths before collapsing, long enough to release whatever demonic forces were already waiting beyond it.

The formation specialists knew the same thing.

Blue Sphere teams reinforced the receiving arrays.

Veridian Prime extended roots through the physical conduits to identify where they could be severed without collapsing the ground beneath allied positions. Marephoros cultivators moved toward the channels carrying the strongest force and began reducing violent fluctuations rather than allowing the anchor to surge between extremes. Pyrelith fighters took positions around the exposed structure, ready to break the hardened sections once the transfer reached the correct point. Umbrel Spire moved along the remaining enemy routes, preventing formation cultivators from reaching the anchor to reverse the process. Celestara controlled the air above them, intercepting every demon that tried to descend toward the specialists.

Haotian moved to the center but did not take control away from them.

The northern anchor had to be dismantled in stages.

The first conduit separated.

Veridian roots tightened around the exposed physical line as Blue Sphere specialists shifted the receiving formation. Marephoros control reduced the resulting pressure surge. Pyrelith struck the hardened shell around the conduit only after the spiritual flow dropped below the level that would cause detonation.

The line broke.

The rift contracted.

A second conduit began carrying more load.

The demons beyond the throat responded.

Dark shapes pressed toward the narrowing opening.

Celestara fighters intercepted the first winged creature that forced its way through. Umbrel cultivators moved beneath it when it fell, preventing the body from crushing the specialists. Blue Sphere formations rotated without losing the receiving pattern. The coalition continued working.

The second conduit separated.

The rift contracted again.

The eastern anchor suddenly pulled.

Haotian's attention snapped toward Yueru's position.

The deeper relationship he had noticed before the battle activated, drawing pressure away from the collapsing northern anchor and toward something outside the basin.

The eastern formation specialists had isolated the visible conduit.

They had not isolated whatever lay beneath it.

Haotian entered the Dao Palace of the Universe more deeply.

Space opened to his perception.

The eastern anchor was not merely part of the reinforcement artery.

It was also a relay.

The Abyss had connected it to another rift network farther north-east, allowing pressure from this basin to escape rather than die when the three local anchors collapsed.

Haotian understood immediately why the eastern defenders had remained passive for most of the battle.

They had never been protecting the weakest anchor.

They had been protecting the route through which the artery could survive.

He sent the change through the coalition formation.

Yueru's team stopped the planned destruction.

Veridian cultivators around the eastern shelf drove their awareness deeper, tracing the physical component of the relay. Marephoros moved to stabilize the pressure now accelerating through it. Pyrelith held their attacks. Blue Sphere specialists began building a second temporary bypass.

The rift fought them.

The northern anchor released another surge.

Haotian felt the three relationships pulling against one another and recognized that sequential handling was no longer enough. The western anchor was nearly dead. The northern anchor was collapsing. The eastern relay was drawing everything away.

Heaven Sundering Trinity Scripture began circulating through his three cores.

The synchronization came first.

His heart core, the core within his sea of consciousness, and his dantian core entered one coordinated rhythm rather than acting as three separate sources Haotian attempted to combine afterward. Only once that synchronization settled did the corresponding Dao Palaces begin functioning together.

The Dao Palace of the Universe held the spatial relationships of the three anchors and the rift throat.

The Dao Palace of Creation entered the damaged formation network, preserving the stable functions the coalition still needed while conduits were being cut away.

The Dao Palace of Destruction reached only the relationships that had to end.

The Law of Equilibrium governed all three.

Haotian did not unleash their power across the basin.

He narrowed it.

Universe prevented the relay from widening into another route.

Creation maintained the temporary bypass long enough for the specialists to keep working.

Destruction severed the hidden connection beneath the eastern anchor where Veridian Prime had traced the physical conduit and Blue Sphere specialists had isolated its formation relationship.

The relay resisted.

Pressure from the distant network pulled against the severance.

Haotian felt the strain enter all three cores at once.

He did not increase power blindly.

Equilibrium identified where the opposing relationships were weakest.

Destruction entered there.

The hidden relay separated.

The eastern anchor shuddered.

Yueru's team acted immediately.

Veridian roots tightened around the physical conduits.

Marephoros redirected the release through the prepared bypass.

Blue Sphere specialists stabilized the formation.

Pyrelith struck the hardened anchor shell in three concentrated attacks.

The eastern structure broke without detonating.

The northern anchor lost the route through which it had been trying to unload its burden.

The final collapse began.

Haotian held the rift throat through Universe while Creation prevented the failing local network from tearing the basin apart around the coalition. Destruction moved through the last conduit only after the formation specialists confirmed that the remaining stored pressure had entered the receiving arrays.

The conduit vanished as a functioning relationship.

The rift contracted violently.

Demons caught halfway through were pulled backward or crushed within the narrowing spatial throat. Celestara fighters cleared the air above it. Ground teams withdrew from the immediate center rather than remaining close to watch. The receiving formations discharged their stored burden through prepared routes across the basin, where Marephoros and Veridian cultivators kept the release from becoming another weapon against the army.

The opening narrowed from a broad tear to a vertical wound.

Then to a dark line.

Then the pressure vanished.

Haotian kept the Heaven Sundering Trinity Scripture synchronized for several breaths longer.

He followed the former throat through the Dao Palace of the Universe, checking whether the corridor had merely compressed. Creation tested the damaged local relationships for anything attempting to rebuild. Destruction remained ready without continuing to erase what no longer needed to be erased.

Nothing reopened.

He released the synchronized circulation gradually.

The three cores separated into their ordinary rhythms.

Around him, the battle did not end at the same instant as the rift.

Demons already inside the basin continued fighting.

The coalition did not mistake the closure for permission to relax.

Blue Sphere commanders tightened the legions around the remaining enemy groups. Umbrel Spire blocked retreat routes through the western ridge. Celestara denied aerial escape. Veridian Prime secured tunnels and unstable ground. Marephoros prevented the remaining demons from building enough momentum for a concentrated breakout. Pyrelith attacks destroyed the positions that could no longer be reinforced.

The resistance collapsed section by section.

Haotian joined only where the strongest survivors threatened to break through a mixed team. He did not spend his remaining strength erasing ordinary enemies the coalition could defeat itself.

Lianhua returned from the western anchor after the bypass was shut down completely. The wound across her palm had stopped bleeding but would make gripping the sword uncomfortable until it healed. She did not conceal it or attempt to force immediate restoration simply because Haotian could see her. Yueru came down from the eastern shelf with dirt across one side of her armor and a shallow cut along the shoulder where one defender had nearly caught her during the relay failure. Tianlan landed later with two Frost Rainbow Falcons close behind him while the third remained with the reserve, having never needed to enter the most congested portion of the battle.

Haotian saw wear across all of them.

He also saw that none had been reduced to spectators in his fight with the General.

The objective existed because the army had taken it.

Formation specialists began checking the three destroyed anchors before the last bodies were removed from the basin. The western structure was inert. The northern anchor had collapsed completely after the final conduit separation. The eastern relay was physically broken where Veridian roots and Pyrelith attacks had reached its buried structure.

Yet one specialist remained kneeling beside the eastern remains longer than the others.

Haotian moved toward him.

The man had uncovered a section of conduit below the shattered anchor and was following a residue that should have vanished when the relay broke. It was not carrying active rift pressure anymore. The remaining trace was too weak for that.

It was directional.

Something on the far side had reacted when Haotian severed the connection.

Not reopened it.

Not repaired it.

Reacted.

Haotian extended Space through the Dao Palace of the Universe only far enough to confirm the specialist's discovery.

The residual relationship traveled north-east beneath the basin and disappeared beyond the range the coalition had mapped.

It did not lead back toward the stronghold.

It led toward another section of the rift network.

The army around them was still reorganizing when the formation teams began marking the direction on their maps. Wounded cultivators were being moved away from the destroyed anchors. Replacement teams searched the western trenches and the underground channels for surviving demons. Pyrelith fighters cooled weapons that had been pushed too hard during the final collapse. Marephoros cultivators worked through the receiving arrays to release whatever force remained trapped inside them. Veridian Prime checked the damaged ground before allowing large formations to gather near the former rift site. Celestara maintained patrols above the basin, and Umbrel cultivators continued searching routes the enemy might have prepared for withdrawal.

Haotian remained beside the broken eastern relay.

The reinforcement artery was gone.

What remained beneath it had just shown them where part of the larger network went next.

The coalition had not finished clearing the basin when the first scouting formations began turning north-east.
