Fallout and Fragments
Location:Stark Industries Workshop, Los Angeles – The Next Day
The buzz of welding tools echoed across the steel-clad walls of the workshop. Sparks flickered like fireflies, catching the sharp gleam of metal. Blue holograms hovered over Toni Stark's forearm interface as she examined a fractured piece of vibranium alloy—once part of Obadiah's monstrous suit.
On the corner monitor, news coverage cycled through clips of last night's battle in the skies above Los Angeles. The footage was grainy, shaky from civilians' phones, but unmistakable: two armored titans clashed in the sky, explosions lit the night, and then came the blinding flash—President Stephen Lance Carter descending like a celestial figure in a gold-and-white armor, saving her.
CNN: "Unconfirmed reports suggest that the second armored figure who arrived mid-battle was none other than President Carter himself. White House officials have not commented, but Americans across the nation are calling him Super-President."
FOX News: "Is President Carter a god? An alien? Or has Stark Industries created a military-grade war suit and handed it to the Commander-in-Chief?"
MSNBC: "Regardless of who they were, last night's battle has changed the world forever. Superhumans now fight in American skies... and the President is one of them."
Toni gritted her teeth, staring at her own image on-screen—her Mark III suit torn, scorched, yet still standing.
She yanked her welding mask off, cursing under her breath.
"Even in armor... I still needed him to save me."
"Talking to yourself again, Trouble?"
She turned, startled. Lance Carter leaned against the doorframe, still wearing the tailored black suit from earlier, his signature cape folded across one arm. He smiled that soft, smug grin that made her want to slap him and kiss him.
"Didn't even hear you," she muttered.
"That's what happens when you're lost in your genius billionaire inventor bubble."
He walked over, eyes scanning the new white-and-gold suit frame suspended behind her.
"Is this for me?"
She arched a brow. "Maybe. Maybe not. I was thinking of giving it to the Pope."
Lance smirked. "He'll love the solar lines. Divine."
She chuckled, shaking her head. "It's a prototype. Solar energy absorption grid, adaptive kinetic dampeners, and a new AI. Name's Athena. She'll flirt with you less than FRIDAY."
"Disappointing."
She fell silent, turning the vibranium plate in her hand. Her expression softened.
"I thought… I was past being vulnerable. I built the Mark III so I could stop feeling like the helpless woman in a cave. But even with it, I still needed you to save me."
Lance stepped forward, gently taking the metal from her hands. "Toni. You did save yourself. I just made sure you had backup."
He brushed a lock of hair behind her ear.
"Put on the suit," he said softly.
She blinked. "Why?"
"Because I'm taking you somewhere."
Scene 2: Graves and Ghosts
Location:National Military Cemetery, Arlington
The sky was soft gray, blanketing the horizon like mourning silk. Toni's boots clicked against the wet stone as she followed Lance down a narrow row of graves—each etched with names of fallen soldiers, too many of whom were unknown to the world.
Lance stopped in front of a black marble headstone. No name. Just the words:
"FORGOTTEN, NEVER UNHONORED"
He took a breath and began to speak.
"I was 18. Bright-eyed. No powers. No plan. I just wanted to be like him—Captain America. My... father."
"First tour, my team walked into an ambush. RPG hit our convoy. I was buried under metal, blood in my eyes, bodies around me. They screamed. Some begged. One... just looked at me and smiled. Said, 'At least I'm not dying alone.'"
Toni stood beside him, silent, heart pounding.
"That night, I killed my first man. Watched the light leave his eyes. I never forgot his face. I didn't even know his name."
He looked down at his hands. "I built my strength. My knowledge. My status... just so I'd never feel that helpless again."
He turned to her, eyes gleaming with tears he didn't shed.
"You asked if you're weak for needing help. You're not. We all need help. But real strength is what you did: standing up, building the suit, flying into fire."
Toni wiped her eyes, voice breaking.
"I couldn't protect myself… and I hated it."
"You did. You will. But healing isn't about revenge or armor. It's about remembering the pain... and still choosing to rise."
She collapsed into his arms, shaking.
"Thank you."
He held her, strong and silent, as the wind whistled through the fields of flags and stone.
Scene 3: Donuts and Justice
Location:Lou's Donut Palace – Los Angeles
"Look who crawled back from the dead," said Lou, the shop's ancient, sarcastic owner as Lance and Toni entered, still in partial armor. "America's royal couple."
"We're not—" Toni began.
Lou pointed a powdered donut at them. "You kiss on TV, fight giant metal men, save the world... but you're not dating? Save it."
He handed them two double-glazed caramel-maple rings. "On the house. But I want a photo."
"You just want to frame it next to your Elvis shrine," Lance smirked.
"You know it."
As they munched on their donuts, sitting atop the building's rooftop billboard, Toni leaned on his shoulder.
"I feel lighter," she whispered.
"Could be the sugar. Or the PTSD lifting."
They laughed.
Just as the sun dipped lower, Lance's face twitched.
He stood up. "Bank robbery. Four blocks away. Armed. Want in?"
Toni grinned. "I thought you'd never ask."
Location:Downtown LA Bank
The robbers were shouting, guns raised.
"Get the cash! Now!"
One masked man grabbed the manager by the collar. "Where's the vault—"
BOOM!
The ceiling caved in.
A golden figure floated down, cape fluttering, solar light crackling through his veins.
Next to him landed Iron Woman—sleek, crimson and gold, her repulsors humming.
The robbers froze.
"Oh... sh*t."
Toni cocked her head. "Language."
