Chapter 4
Chapter Text
Lucian had made his way to the outskirts of a village, or at least that's what the merchant he passed told him. The village was pretty remote, not getting many visitors due to increased monster attacks. It made sense though that it happened to this village though, it was just inside the territory of the Jura Forest after all. He entered a small clearing when it happened.
A young man had seen him enter the clearing, the young man it seemed practicing swordsmanship in the woods with a stick before Lucian had arrived. It seemed that the stories of Lucian's actions had reached the village somehow as the teen seemed to recognize him.
"Are you the healer they call Lucian?" he asked him with a voice full of hope.
"Yes I am," Lucian said with a nod of his head, unprepared for the teen to come right up to him in an instant.
"Please" the teen bowed while saying "heal Gramps!"
That led him to now, healing an old man in this small village. Along the way the teen introduced himself as Blake and told him more about the situation. The man he was healing was simply known as 'Gramps,' and he was the elder of this village. Gramps had raised many of the children of the village, taking care of them while their parents worked or fended off the local monster population. The man was especially important to Blake as Gramps had completely raised him after his parents died during an attack. Now he was sick after an insect got through the warriors and couldn't even get out of bed now.
Now Lucian was healing him from the poison that seemed to have been in the attack. Luckily, the old man was the only one with such severe injuries. He summoned the light from his skill and bathed the man in the healing light. Soon Gramps seemed to almost age backwards, wrinkles vanishing, color returning to his face, even some of his hair grew back on his bald head. Once Lucian was done and had Soul Sage double check that the patient was fine he left the small home that served as the elder's residence
Once he walked out Blake ambushed him again.
"So? Is Gramps going to be ok!?" the passionate teen asked him.
Lucian had to physically push the teen back, though the smile on his face showed his lack of annoyance.
"Your Gramps is going to be just fine after a bit of rest. He has a few good years left in him now" Lucian told him and started to walk through the small village, Blake following him almost like a puppy.
Blake sighed in relief and then began to talk with Lucian, describing life in the village and his dreams of being a great swordsman. During this time Lucian took a better look at the teen before him. He seemed to be about fifteen and stood at a healthy 5' 8. Blake had dark red hair and blue eyes, a toned physique likely from his training, and was dressed in threadbare cotton clothes. Overall a healthy and somewhat good looking boy.
"Oh crap, I just remembered! The stories that merchants told said that you always ask for something in exchange. I'm sorry, I don't really have anything for you sir" Blake said suddenly, cutting himself off mid-sentence before bowing in apology.
Lucian laughed it off with a wave.
"There's no need for payment this time, no worries" he told the teen honestly.
The boy thanked him again and again as they kept walking through the town. Lucian noticed how parts of the village were damaged and broken, the dirt having scoff marks abound. From his own, albeit limited, experience with combat it looked like a fight had happened recently.
'I can't charge a son for saving his father. After all, I know what it's like when all you can do is see them waste away in a bed' Lucian thought remembering his old life and how his parents passed.
That led to his next sentence though.
"Hey Blake, are there any more injured?" he asked the teen.
Blake had led him to a building where their injured were being treated after that. Gramps hadn't been there and instead in his own home as he was deemed unsavable by the medics. So Gramps had been given the dignity of dying in his own bed, though now that was more of a nap than a final rest. Once Lucian walked through the doors into the treatment room he got to work.
After two hours he had healed all the injured villagers completely. This had led to all of the villagers thanking him profusely, either for healing them or a loved one. Once everyone was up and about, even Gramps leaving his bed after the time that had passed, they all decided to throw a celebration.
"It's time we feast!" Gramps had shouted in front of all the village to cheers.
Thus Lucian was now the guest of honor at the village's feast, not that he was complaining. Though he was a bit awkward at first with all the praise from them, but once people started drinking it became easier. After all, Lucian loved watching funny drunks mess around in good fun. The feast lasted all night, and led to many being hung over the next morning.
Lucian had decided during the feast to stay a while, something Suzaku agreed with as he found the atmosphere fun as well. So Lucian spent two days there, helping out around the village with repairs and the like. It was during the night two days after the feast that an issue arose.
During the dark of night a horde of centipede monsters came towards the village. The guards sounded the alarm and many of the villagers took up arms to fight the beasts, including Blake. Lucian now stood at the village edge with the others who were preparing to fight and he heard the whispers.
"That's way more than usual," one said in hushed tones.
"I'm not sure we can handle that many, but I'll go down fighting if it comes to it" another said like a prayer.
Lucian looked to his right where Blake stood. At first he thought the teen was handling it well, until he saw the shaking of his sword arm that gripped his iron blade. That was when he knew the teen was scared for his life, showing a fear he'd only seen the young man show when he thought his Gramps might not make it.
"Me and my bleeding heart…" Lucian mumbled to himself though Blake heard him.
The silver haired man walked out in front of the armed villagers and stood before the charging insects. Many of the villagers shouted at him to move, afraid for the man who had healed their injured. Lucian merely put on a smirk and called forth the Essence of Flame while gripping his sword. He pushed the flames of his skill into the blade, making it catch fire and burn with great intensity. He then brought the blade up across his body before saying a single thing.
"Pyre Slash!" the Nephilim shouted as he swung his blade back across his body.
From his blade a flood of flames rushed out, drowning the insects in a wave of burning flames. The monsters barely had time to scream before turning to ash, ending the threat without a single villager falling prey to them. For a moment none of them knew how to react. That was until Blake started cheering, leading the others to join in with the teens' excitement. Suzaku let out a celebratory screech as well once Lucian raised his arm into the air, sword still clutched in his hand.
That night the village rejoiced and had a small party, still recovering from the one a few days previous. When morning came and the villagers rose with the sun Lucian received thanks wherever he went from them. It was around noon when he stumbled upon Blake. The red haired teen was swinging his rusty sword with utter focus, not even noticing Lucian.
The Nephilim studied the teen and saw a few different areas for improvement. So he walked up to him and grabbed a wooden blade from his pocket space. He then put himself in front of Blake and drew a line in the dirt with his sword.
"Care for a spare?" he asked the swordsman in training, to which Blake eagerly accepted.
That's how Lucian spent his days after that, helping around the village and sparring with Blake. Before he knew it the Nephilim had spent a month in the village so satisfactory was his life there. However he knew he had to leave soon and continue to grow stronger. Lucian knew that only the strong had rights in this world, and there were plenty of threats that could lead to his demise. He also had no idea how an angel or Michael might react to his unique existence.
So he told Gramps he was leaving that day and proceeded to leave that night. Or at least that was the plan. Blake met him at the border of the village, waiting for him.
"And what do you think you're doing Blake?" he asked the teen with a raised eyebrow.
The teen stood in front of him with a determined look on his face.
"I want to go with you! Gramps told me you're leaving, and I want to travel alongside you. I've already said my goodbyes and I'm willing to pull my weight" Blake said with a serious and focused voice.
Lucian looked at him, unsure at first what to do.
"Blake, you don't know everything about me. You might change your mind if you did" he said in warning, not wanting to get the teen into something he wouldn't want once he knew what Lucian was.
"I don't care" the redhead said, "whatever it is you think could make me change my mind won't?"
"Even if I'm not human?" he said to the teen, asking in a somewhat vulnerable voice.
Lucian had grown close with the teen before him, almost seeing him like a younger brother. He hoped that this wouldn't drive a wedge between them right as he's leaving.
"I don't care what you are, you're you and that's all that matters" Blake said, his voice almost challenging Lucian to say otherwise.
The silver haired man was shocked, most humans don't have such a view after all. Once his shock was over though he smiled at the teen.
"Alright, but there's a condition" he told the redheaded youth while holding up a finger.
"Name it!" he said, passion burning in his eyes.
"You…" Lucian drew out his condition just to tease the teen "…have to train like I tell you to. I won't let someone weak follow me along my path with the kind of dangers I might someday face."
Blake just looked like Christmas came early, or whatever this world's equivalent was.
"Alright! That's not a condition, it's a reward!" the teen said in joy as he jumped up from how energized he was.
Lucian smiled at his new student and began to walk out of the village once more. This time with a human tag along.
"By the way, since you're not human what are you?" Blake asked as they walked along.
"Oh, I'm a Nephilim," Lucian said in a carefree tone.
"Ah, that makes sense- wait! What the heck is a Nephilim?" Blake said bewildered and made a face of confusion that made Lucian laugh.
It was a week later, and Lucian was training his new tagalong. Blake had chosen the path of a swordsman, apparently according to the elder of the village his father had been a swordsman before perishing in battle. So the redheaded teen had decided to follow in his departed father's footsteps as best he could and try to master the blade. So Lucian had decided to put the teen through his paces by having him use a heavy blade made using Material Creation to practice with.
Thus leading to Blake swinging his heavy twenty pound blade over and over in the small clearing they were in. Originally the blade had been only five pounds, but the teen responded to the training incredibly well. In fact, Lucian was starting to think Blake was responding a bit too well.
"Blake, come over here for a second will you?" he said to his student to which the teen agreed.
Blake set his blade down against a nearby tree and walked over to the man he'd chosen to follow.
"What is it Boss?" he asked, getting a sigh from the silver haired man at the form of address.
"You are responding to your training very well, in fact too well for a normal human. I was wondering if you'd let me use one of my skills to analyze you to see what is going on" Lucian told him his request in a calm tone of voice tinged with curiosity.
Blake agreed without hesitation and so the Nephilim used Soul Sage to scan his student. The results were a bit interesting.
'Notice: Individual Blake has been found to possess the Extra Skill Enhanced Body. This skill enhances the user's physical abilities and growth rate of their physical abilities. The latter is a passive effect, while the former is an active effect. It is likely the individual Blake has no idea that he has this skill and does not know how to use its active effect due to most likely having been born with it' Soul Sage told him, making the teens results from training suddenly make sense to Lucian.
"Well Blake, you're in luck. You have a very useful skill!" Lucian told him with a strange smile on his face.
Initially Blake was excited at the news, until he saw the smile on Lucian's face. For some reason he felt that a world of pain was in store for him in the near future. While the redhead was having these thoughts Lucian was currently hearing the One Punch Man opening song with a single thought going through his head.

Chapter 5
Chapter Text
It was two weeks later, and Blake had been put through hell. After Lucian found out about the skill his student had he put together one hell of a training regimen. All in an attempt to make Blake as strong as he could be. This has led to the teen's days looking something like this:
In the morning Blake was woken up early and made to do a two hour run where he had to run as fast as he could the whole time. About a week in, that no longer strained him enough in Lucian's opinion so he made weights that Blake had to wear on his back while running. After the morning run the redhead had to swing his practice sword for an hour, the blade becoming heavier and heavier as the days passed. A break for breakfast that lasted about half an hour then followed, prepared by Lucian using ingredients stored in Spatial Storage.
Lucian was used to cooking for himself late at night in some of the homes he'd lived in before. So his cooking was more than palatable to the growing teen. Once finished with breakfast they started walking towards their destination, somewhere Blake hadn't been able to get out of his silver haired teacher yet. After a few hours of travel they stopped for lunch and Lucian started the teen's training back up again. First was a weighted calisthenics routine followed by mediation. Once the sun began to set Lucian had the teen spare with him, pushing the young man to his limits as much as he dared.
The only reason Blake wasn't too upset with this harsh training that now required him to do his exercises with over two hundred pounds added was that Lucian was training alongside him. Lucian didn't do the exact same training as Blake, exchanging the running in the morning for magic practice and the weight training for mastering all the arts he now knew along with trying to make his own. Blake also knew that his teacher was training even in the dead of night due to not requiring sleep. As far as he knew the Nephilim was training in the use of his skills during that time.
All that, combined with his skill, had led to Blake now sporting a taller and leaner physique. He had abs for crying out loud! Blake could hardly recognize himself sometimes when he looked at his reflection in the occasional stream. He was now five foot ten and his body was more defined than he had ever expected. The teen also felt far stronger than he did not that long ago. For fun one day the redhead punched a boulder he found in the forest a little ways away from their campsite that night.
The rock cracked into pieces once his fist made contact and the teen had never been more surprised. Except for when his teacher had told him what the heck a Nephilim was. Regardless, all that made Blake feel his training was worth it.
Now he was following his teacher down a dirt path, Lucian telling him to skip his morning workout. He wondered why though.
Lucian broke through the tree line, finally reaching the place where the dirt path he'd found met the more developed road he's been searching for. It wasn't paved like it would come to be in the following years if this world followed what he knew, but it was a marked difference compared to the path he and Blake had been on for the past few days. Lucian had figured out about when he had arrived in the timeline from a few different things during his travels and from talking with Blake.
He estimated that it was about five or six years before the main story would begin with the arrival of Rimuru. The main detail that he used to figure this out was that apparently Hinata Sakaguchi had recently made it to the position of captain in the holy knights according to the rumor mill. That put him solidly before her being established as a skilled hero like she was in the main series. A few other things aided this conclusion for Lucian, mainly how the Forest of Jura was still just a forest and the Conquer of Flames was still somewhat active. The merchants he'd made passing deals with had been more than willing to trade for information, aiding greatly in the gathering of this information.
That all led to now, the place he'd been thinking of going to before coming across Blake and his village, the kingdom of Blumund. Specifically the only city of Blumund known as Londo. Lucian had decided to try and register as an adventurer in the cities guild, and once Blake had joined him the Nephilim had decided to train him up to snuff to become one as well. Hence the training hell he'd put him through.
"I think I shall tell you my plans now Blake" Lucian began and explained his thoughts to the young man.
Blake was excited at the prospect of becoming an adventure, suddenly even more glad for the harsh training. The duo then kept walking for a few more hours until they came across the walls of Londo. They spotted the line for entrance and entered it to enter themselves. The line moved pretty quickly thankfully, and they soon were in front of the gate guards.
"What is your name and reason for visiting Londo?" one of the two guards asked, his voice betraying his boredom.
Lucian looked the guard in the eye before responding in a casual manner.
"I'm Lucian Silver and this is my companion Blake. "We're here to register with the Free Guild" he told the guard with a small friendly smile on his face.
The two guards scrutinized the duo for a bit before giving them leave to pass into the city. It was about two hours later, after asking for directions from a few different people, that they found themselves in front of the guild building. Lucian turned towards Blake and got a nod in response before walking up the steps to the building.
After entering the hall the two of them walked up to a counter where a nice looking lady was acting as the receptionist. Luckily, they had come in at a slow time so there was no line to wait in.
"Hello" Lucian started speaking to the receptionist "me and my friend here would like to take the exam to become adventures."
"Oh" the lady started "of course. What is the specialty you're looking to do? Combat, Scouting, or Collection?" she asked as she shuffled a few papers around.
After informing her that Blake wished to take the Subjugation exam (what they called the monster fighting exam) and he wanted to take both that and the Collection exam she went off to inform the appropriate people. It was a few minutes later when they were led out back to a more secure room where a man in robes was waiting for them.
"Hello, I am your proctor for this exam. I am a summoner and I shall summon a monster that you must defeat in order to become adventures. If you pass and wish to see if you qualify for a higher rank then I will summon another monster of increased power for you to fight. Do you understand all that I have told you?" the robed proctor told them, his voice somewhat blank in the way a bored office worker is.
Lucian nodded to the proctor and pushed Blake forward, clearly indicating for him to go first. Blake sighed at his teacher's action but moved forward to take the exam all the same. Once closer to the robbed summoner the proctor set up a barrier that had Blake inside, he then proceeded to summon a large dog looking monster known as a Hound Dog. It was the weakest monster and killing it would lead to Blake becoming an E-rank adventurer in the eyes of the guild.
The teen drew his iron blade that his teacher had made for him before coming here. The hound charged at him and Blake gripped his blade tight while releasing a breath. In a flash of movement that the hound couldn't trace Blake went from being in front of the beast's jaws, to being behind it and flourishing his blade. The hound died in but an instant, cleanly sliced down the middle.
The proctor showed no surprise, nor any difficulty in tracing the redhead's movement. After he asked the test-taker if he wished to continue, which was answered in the affirmative, he summoned the next monster. This process went on, Blake killing each summoned beast in short order until it came to the B-rank test of a red Lesser Dragon. Blake struggled with the beast, having to put in far more effort than had before. This actually led to Blake using the active effect of his Extra Skill for the first time, letting him slay the beast.
After that Blake told the proctor he was done, to which the proctor nodded and let him out of the barrier. Lucian then walked forward, patting his student on the shoulder with a proud smile. Soon the silver haired man stepped into the designated spot and a barrier was put up around him. A similar process to what Blake went through followed, though Lucian didn't even bother to use a sword until the B-rank test came.
A brown Lesser Dragon this time was summoned and Lucian took out his Special grade sword. He pushed his will into his blade, making the grey metal gain a red sheen to it. The blade seemed to be physically heating up the air around it, making a slight haze effect form from the blade. The dragon roared at the man and Lucian responded with a single slash. When the blade made contact with the earth aligned lizard the beast wasn't just cut but was engulfed in fire.
"Immolation Slash" was all the Nephilim said, the name of his attack the only sound the audience could hear after the cries of the beast ceased.
Lucian indicated to the proctor that he was finished and the stunned summoner took a moment to collect themselves before the barrier went down.
After that it was a fairly quick process to get their registration cards from the guild. After about two hours they now had their guild ID, were given a tour of the guild facilities they now had access to and had exchanged the gathered monster bodies that Lucian had stored during their journey for money. Overall a very productive afternoon.
It was two weeks later, and the duo were now leaving the city of Londo. They had spent these two weeks learning and training using the resources the guild had given them access to, primarily the library and sparing yard. Lucian had spent most of his time in the library, learning magic and more knowledge about the wider world. He even found a book that cataloged known skills of all types, though there were only a small few Unique Skills.
Blake spent much of his time in the sparing yard, sharpening his skills against the other warriors there. He had even had the chance to spare against two mages to gain some experience in fighting magic wielders. Lucian joined him for at least an hour each day, challenging the more skilled fighters there. The Nephilim used this chance to experiment more with his Soul Bargen skill, particularly what would count as a deal made mid-fight.
It turned out that while the conditions for what was considered an agreement were loose, there were some hard restrictions. Mainly that his opponent needed to actually hear what he was saying, the skill not letting him make deals with others unknowing of what they were in for. It was a pretty simple restriction to get around through and through these efforts he'd gained much more knowledge on fighting styles of all kinds. He'd phrased the deals as if he beat the opponent then he would get to learn the moves of the other. His sparring partners had agreed, thinking he was asking them to show him some of their moves, not gain a copy of their entire fighting style.
Lucian had felt a little guilty but that faded once he thought about the dangers in this world. He figured he shouldn't feel bad for doing something that could increase both his and his companion's chance at survival, especially if it didn't actually hurt anyone.
After all their training and studying the duo were now even stronger. This led to Lucian feeling like they were ready to undergo the next leg of their journey. So he had sat down with his red haired friend in their shared room at a local inn that they'd gotten with the money from the monster parts.
Lucian sat on his bed facing Blake, who was doing the same on his own.
"I think we've stayed here long enough for me to feel comfortable taking us to our next destination" Lucian started to tell the young man.
Blake leaned back a bit.
"Oh, where were you thinking of going?" he asked in curiosity at his friend's words.
"I aim for us to journey to the Armed Nation of Dwargon. As I have told you before, I am currently possessing a body made from a basic material. That is insufficient if I wish to reach my full potential. So I wish to go to that county of smiths to gain a magisteel body to possess, as well as commission a sword there for each of us" the Nephilim told him, explaining his goals.
Blake was surprised, especially at the prospect of having such a blade.
"How will you afford that? Wait! Is that why you had us become adventures, to more easily gather funds for this?" he asked, putting his teacher's intentions together.
Lucian nodded at the young man, proud of his student growing smarter and not just stronger. He'd been taking the time during moments of physical rest to teach the teen things he didn't have the chance to learn in his village. He also told the teen tales of heroes from his world, of humans that had the might of gods in hopes of inspiring his student.
"Yes," he said in response, "that is part of it. The other reason was to gain the ID cards to make it easier to travel between nations. The other resources were a happy bonus."
After that, the two went to sleep and set out early the next morning. The two bought supplies from the market such as food and better camping supplies before leaving. Then after waving off the guards that happened to be the same that granted them entry, the duo walked eastward bound for the Armed Nation of Dwargon.
A masked swordswoman was walking in the woods by her lonesome, watching. She had gotten a request from the guild that troubled her, a Medium Dragon had been terrorizing the countryside nearby. The reports of the damage were immense, to the point her long honed intuition felt something was wrong. Like it was too much destruction to be just a Medium Dragon. Regardless, the Conquer of Flames would deal with the beast as was her charge.
"I hate that name sometimes. What's wrong with Shizu!" she said a bit exacerbated by the people of this world's obsession with fancy names.
Shizu simply sighed and continued to walk on, hoping her hunt wouldn't take too long or become too exciting. Exciting usually meant difficult after all and she was not in the mood.

Chapter 6
Chapter Text
It was a week later, and the duo of swordsman and Nephilim were in the Forest of Jura near the border. Lucian had decided to go for a more direct route to the nation of dwarves for a few reasons. One was to save time of course, another being that he thought this way he and his student would run into some monsters to fight against. He knew that the best way to gain strength was through battle and he hoped the two of them could grow even stronger.
Lucian already had gathered some boons from this decision, including a few souls. After all the sparring matches he had been a part of while making deals during them he'd actually gained something new. Soul Sage had informed him that a possible new Extra Skill was available if he used some of his magicules to make it. After agreeing he now had the Extra Skill known as Soul Harvest. It worked like so: whenever something or someone came at him with intent to cause permanent harm or death, if Lucian killed them their soul automatically became his. This sadly did not result in him gaining their skills or knowledge like gaining a soul through Soul Bargen, instead just the rare soul energy. It did aid in his progress towards evolution though.
During this past week, the traveling duo had run into a pack of bandits numbering around fifteen. Lucian had killed ten of them, while Blake killed the rest. The Nephilim had been a bit surprised when Blake handled his first kills so well. That was until Blake had told him that his first kill had been some two years ago when a group of men tried to raid the village. Plus all the monsters he'd killed before helped him adjust far more easily than others, especially with how some of them looked like humans sometimes.
They had also encountered a few monsters as well. Mainly the occasional dire wolf or overly combative goblin. Lucian had let Suzaku out to deal with them, wanting his elemental friend to get some training in. He had been letting the fire elemental stay in a kind of 'summon space' for the most part. Suzaku preferred it that way, not wanting to accidentally set anything on fire he wasn't supposed to. Which had happened, a lot.
Blake was used to seeing the flaming bird, having met him back at the village while training with his to-be teacher. They got along well, Suzaku seeming to sense something in the teen that he liked. Regardless, Suzaku got a little bit stronger with each battle, and this also led to a happy discovery for Lucian. Anything that the fire bird killed also was affected by Lucian's Soul Harvest skill via the soul corridor between them, letting the souls of Suzaku's kills go to Lucian.
The monster souls didn't help much sadly, mainly because they were such weak monsters. After the five direwolves and three goblins it had only equated to about two human souls which was the 'currency' Soul Sage used when telling how close he was to evolution. It was a tiny bit annoying but also understandable.
Blake had also gotten a bit stronger during this time, from both the exercise routine he kept up with and from fighting some of the bandits and monsters they encountered. The teen was happy with how he was growing, glad for his decision to follow Lucian every day.
It was as the two were walking through the forest that they heard it, Lucian more so than Blake since he'd gained the Mana Perception skill during his meditative training. A loud roar shook the forest some distance away, and it was coming closer. Lucian turned towards Blake, getting a nod in response as the two drew their blades and entered battle stances.
Suddenly a large black dragon burst through the tree line. It charged right at the two of them, though seemed to be uncaring of their presence and merely seeing them as in the way. Blake and Lucian jumped out of the way before the beast could slam into them, each going in the opposite direction. The both of them took their chance once at either side of the dragon and attacked. Blake pushed as much of his battlewill into his blade as he could while his silver haired teacher pushed flames down the length of his.
Both blades merely made a screeching sound as they slid against the dragon's scales, not a scratch on the beast. The dragon spun around, now angered at their actions and trying a swipe attack with its tail. Lucian was hit in the stomach while Blake was buffeted back by the wind's pressure. The both of them were knocked into nearby tree trunks, the breath being pushed out of them in Blake's case. They slowly tried to stand up and collect themselves as the dragon turned to Lucian's struggling form.
'Soul Sage, what the hell is this thing!' The Nephilim cried out to his skill, seeking an answer for the situation he found himself in.
'Answer: What before you is a Medium Dragon that seems to have left its home in hopes of growing stronger. It is believed that this dragon is on the verge of evolution into an Archdragon. Fleeing is highly encouraged' was Soul Sage's response.
"Oh, Fuck" was all he could respond with as he watched the dragon close in on him.
Blake felt helpless as he watched the dragon close in on his mentor, his friend. He tried with all his might to stand up, to fight even if all it would do is by some time. His body just wouldn't respond like he wanted it to, needed it to. Blake was close to giving up hope when something happened.
From the tree line where the dragon had come from a figure blurred onto the scene. The white clade woman drew her blade, engulfed in fire like his teacher's, and slashed at the dragon. To Blake's surprise the beast was actually pushed back! The dragon dug its claws into the ground, trying to gain traction to fight the force pushing it back. Eventually the beast gathered its footing, and Blake got a better look at the masked stranger now in the center of the clearing the battle had made.
She was dressed in primarily white adventuring get up with a white mask upon her face that had red details. The whole outfit seemed to highlight her raven black hair. To be honest Blake had never before been so glad to see someone dressed so fancy.
"Are you two alright?" she asked them in a serious voice.
"Yes" both him and Lucian said, Lucian standing up fully now.
She nodded and entered a battle ready stance, Lucian doing the same, as the dragon advanced on them. They both began to fight the beast, Lucian not quite keeping up with the woman in skill or speed. The two adventures were doing their best to fend the dragon off but were accomplishing little. His silver haired friend was doing his best, but it wasn't enough, while the woman in white seemed to be struggling against something internally that was hampering her efforts.
Lucian seemed to notice his fighting partner's state and called out to her while deflecting a swipe of the dragon's claw.
"Let loose! Just enough to give yourself some room! I can handle the fire!" he shouted to the woman, seemingly surprising her from what Blake could tell.
This led to, after a moment of hesitation, a torrent of flames exploding out of the woman in white. The fire seemed to engulf the dragon, hurting far more than the previous attacks did. The battle seemed to turn in the two's favor as the woman in white let loose and Lucian manipulated the stray flames that she made to attack the beast. The tide of the battle had changed, and the dragon seemed to know it. The beast grew desperate in its struggle against them, and then it began to glow.
A wave of force came from the dragon's body as the glow grew in intensity. The two combatants were pushed back from the force and put their arms in front of themselves to block the wind that picked up with the wave of power.
"It's going to evolve!" the woman shouted over the rushing wind.
"What do we do!" Lucian shouted back.
She seemed to take a moment to think before responding, taking into account what she'd seen her impromptu partner do for this fight.
"…If I were to release my flames at their max, could you control it?! I can make the flames, but I will need all my will to stay in control so I can't manipulate it!" she shouted her plan, a slight tone of worry in her voice.
Lucian smirked, though it was tinged with his worry as he looked back at Blake.
"I can sure as hell try!" he said with a somewhat forced sense of bravado.
That seemed to be enough for the woman as she erupted in flames far greater than before. There was so much fire at such intense heat that Blake feared he might burn even being so far away. A moment after her fiery burst Lucian began to concentrate and focus the flames, pushing them under his will.
It was because of the intense focus of the two that they didn't notice the beast try and attack them mid-evolution. Blake watched on, feeling helpless and wanting to aid them in any way he could. He looked down at his blade, broken after his initial strike against the beast.
'No, I have to do something! I must fight, I must protect them! Even if my blade is broken, I'll just forge one with my very soul!' he thought as he launched himself at the claw of the dragon.
In his adrenaline fueled charge he didn't even hear the sound of the voice of the world.
'Request acknowledged. Skill Blade Manifestation acquisition successful.'
Lucian was focusing harder than he'd ever had before, taking control of the flames from Shizu. He knew it was her the moment she entered onto the scene, recognizing her from the mask she wore and the outfit he'd seen through the screen. He didn't have a chance to geek out over meeting her though, fighting for his and Blake's lives took precedence.
Once he had a firm grasp on the flames he started to compress them, shaping them into the strongest, hottest attack he could. It was then he noticed the claw heading his way, no time to dodge remaining. Lucian feared that that was it, his death coming before his life truly started once more.
Then, a flash of movement caught his eye. What the hell was Blake doing! Trying to block the dragon's attack was foolish for the teen, especially since his blade was gone!
It was as those thoughts passed his mind that a flash came into existence from the teen's hand. When the light died out a moment later a sword had replaced it, taking its place in the teen's hand. The blade looked almost exactly like the redhead's former blade, and it met the claw with little more than the same effectiveness. It broke upon contact with the dragon's claw but was able to divert it from its path enough that the appendage just barely missed Lucian.
In the moment after the claw landed Lucian fortified his resolve, seeing Blake get out of the way once more all he needed. He took a deep breath even though he didn't need air to live. The flames gathered, leaving Shizu without any fire now. They coalesced into a long spear shape in front of him, changing color from red to blue to white. Once the fire spear was so hot that Lucian felt like he was before a star, he shouted out the attack's name and flung his arm forward to direct the spear.
"Helios' Spear!"
The lance of flame shot off so fast it created a boom from the displaced air. Once it made contact with the dragon's chest it seemed to stall for a moment before the spear punctured through its heart. It burrowed all the way through the beast and hit the ground on the other side, creating a great explosion of fire that consumed the dragon whole.
Once the bright flames died down, the group of three could see the dragon once more. Or more accurately what remained of it. Most of the dragon's body was not but ash, only the extremities like the head and arms had anything left not cremated from the attack's intense heat. The three breathed out in relief, Blake and Shizu falling onto their buts from exertion. Lucian stayed standing for a moment, smiling at his handy work. Until everything went black and he fell prone.
The last thing he heard was the shout of his name from Blake's lips and a sound of surprise from Shizu.
