Zenith
My life wasn't all that interesting now that I thought about it. Sure, I had a good start. I was born in the Holy Country of Millis, the second daughter of the Earl of Millis; even as the middle child, everyone expected great things from me. I grew up as, what some may say, "the perfect daughter" or my other nicknames from my teachers, "Millis young lady standard". I never got in trouble, broke any rules set by my parents or teachers, and I always got good grades in school.
That changed, though, when I turned fifteen. During my birthday dinner, my mother said she had started arranging my marriage, seeing as I had finally reached adulthood, and it was best to get started sooner rather than later. She even said another earl's family had been interested. I tried to protest, but my mother shut me down, saying it was my duty as a member of the Latreia household.
I had a feeling that neither my parents nor siblings had expected my response to this.
I ran away that very night.
Looking back on it now, I can see I drastically overestimated my ability to make it on my own. I'm not saying I was a damsel in distress; I had learned intermediate healing magic and detoxification magic, along with some fire and water magic for basic survival and offense, but I thought I could make it as one of the adventures I had read about. Unfortunately, my start as an adventurer went poorly, to say the least.
I was mostly a solo adventurer who partied up with others who would need a healer for a particular job, but I didn't realize how important or expensive healers were. Most of the time, I found myself with just enough to last me a few days. Heck, on several occasions, I had been used as a human shield or a distraction so someone could get a hit on particular monsters.
That all changed when I met Paul Greyrat.
He was also a former noble who had run away from home when he was twelve. It had something to do with his father and the death of his mother, but he rarely talked about them. He had seen my party berate me when I had complained about my take of the profits after a job. He just walked up to me and pulled me away from my party over to a booth he was using.
"Forget those morons! You'll have more fun with my guys and me!" He cheered, a goofy grin plastered over his face. It was the kind of look that you just couldn't say no to.
Before I knew it, he was introducing me to his party, still with that goofy grin on his face. The party was an interesting bunch. The first to introduce themselves was an elf. The woman was beautiful and introduced herself as Elinalise Dragonroad, the party's main tank. Before I could ask anything, the party leader from my now former party came up, screaming how I was their healer, but Elinase walked past and started to aggressively flirt with the party leader and ushered him off to an empty booth.
The others laughed it off, saying Elinalise had nabbed another one. Paul laughed, saying it was a complicated matter. He seemed ready to explain, but another party member came up and shoved a mug of alcohol into my hands. He was a stout dwarf who introduced himself as Talhand. He was a magic knight. He said it would be good to have a proper healer in the party at last. I looked back to the booth to see one person left, a muscular beast girl littered with scars, wearing an eye patch over her right eye…
'By Lord Millis…'
A single piece of fabric stretched across her chest…the only thing stopping her admittedly large breasts from being exposed for everyone to see. Realising I was starting to stare, I averted my gaze, but the beast girl just smirked at me like it was nothing.
"That's Ghislaine! Our resident muscles for brains!" Paul cheered as he introduced the beast girl, only to duck from the now growling beast girl's swipe at his throat.
"I. Dare. You. Say. That. Again…" She furrowed her brow and growled out her challenge. I could feel the rage coming off her, but everyone else laughed it off. Suddenly, I was pushed into an open spot next to her, and Paul took the spot beside me.
"Don't worry about Ghislaine; you get on her good side, and you're set. There's one person you haven't met, though. He's called Geese, but he's likely off gambling with the party funds again."
"Wait, what!?!" I screamed. A party member took all their funds and was gambling with it, and everyone was so calm about it?! "What would possess you to let him do that?!"
Paul only shrugged.
"If he screws up, he knows not to come back till he's at least made the money back up, and if he wins, like he usually does, we'll be set for a lot longer!" Paul cheered as he grabbed his mug and chugged the last of his drink.
"But hey, no need to worry; we may look like a bunch of misfits, but we're already a B Rank team, and with a proper healer, I know we'll make it to S Rank!" Paul tossed his empty mug and shouted for another. He was definitely determined. I then saw Elinalise dragging my former party leader out of the guild. Before I could say anything, though, I learned something about Paul.
He was a pervert.
My new party leader got a creepy grin on his face as he saw one of the barmaids - a girl with short red hair and breasts as big as Ghislaine's. She walked up to us with Paul's next drink. Paul quickly fixed his hair and followed her back to the bar.
"Don't worry about him," Ghislaine said as she pushed a bowl of stew in front of me. "We all have our own problems, but we make it work. A little advice, though: don't bunk with Elinalise or be in the room next to her."
"Why? Is she a snorer?" I asked innocently.
"More of a moaner, but it depends on how many men she brings to bed that night. You'll get used to it," Ghislaine casually mentioned as she took another swig of her ale.
'By lord Millis, what have I gotten myself into?'
Over the next few months, I found out the name of the band of misfits and outcasts I had joined were named the Fangs of the Black Wolf. As I learned more about my party, from Elinalise's curse, to Talhand's history with a brother who betrayed him, to Geese's lack of skills on the battlefield, they really were a band of outcasts. Yet, despite all of that, it was a party that made me feel welcome. That alone was a massive improvement from the other teams I worked with. I was definitely confused about the dynamic between Paul, Elinalise, and Ghislaine, though, as I saw Paul take both to bed on various nights, yet I still saw him seduce other girls. Apparently, it was a more casual thing between them, mostly stress relief and, in Elinalise's case, making her curse manageable when they were out on long jobs.
Still, I found the leers Paul gave me a little off-putting and yet, alluring.
Unfortunately, tonight it backfired on us. After Paul had seduced a girl in an inn we were staying at, the girl's father, the owner, kicked the entire party out because of Paul and his libido. The situation got worse when we were caught in a rainstorm. Elinalise and I made the decision to grab some supplies as Paul and the others found a cave to hunker down in. Unfortunately, our luck continued to get worse as we couldn't get anything. Soaked, hungry, and angry, Elinalise and I ran back to our temporary camp.
Although when we did make it back, the party was left in shock to see us back with not only no supplies but with a baby with emerald green hair.
"What kind of monsters do that to a baby?!" Talhand roared as he looked at the bundle in my arms, still fast asleep, his little hand still gripping my robe.
"He doesn't want to let go, so sweet yet so sad," I cooed as Elinalise draped a blanket over me.
"I know, it's foul," Elinalise growled. Unexpectedly, her tone dripped with venom; this seemed to affect her more. Did Elinalise have a soft spot for kids, or maybe was she a mother at one point?
Elinalise sighed as she looked back at the baby, specifically his mop of emerald green hair.
"But I can sadly understand why he was abandoned."
"Oh, this I gotta hear for myself," Talhand took a spot by the fire before tossing a log into the flames.
"The Superd race, that's why." The moment the demon clan name left her lips, it felt like a cold breeze swept through the cave. Instinctually, I pulled the baby closer. "During the Laplace War, the Superd were a ruthless part of the demon lord Laplace's army. They slaughtered all in their way, including their own allies and their own people. It was said any child born with green hair was an omen, destined to destroy all around them."
"Wait, but don't the Superd have gems in their foreheads and tails as children?" I looked back down at the baby and saw no gem, nor a tail.
"Doesn't matter…All someone needs is green hair, and they'll be marked as a monster," Elinalise's response was cold and realistic, her dark tone revealing the grim reality of society. I knew she was a lot older than me, but it was only now that I saw it.
"Hey! If the kid is an omen, why was he just abandoned?" Ghislaine asked as she walked up to the campfire. She crouched beside me and gave the apparent demon baby a sniff. "He's not a newborn - maybe a few months old - but why abandon him now?"
"Hmmm, maybe he only just got his hair. There are plenty of times babies are born bald, and it takes a while for their hair to grow in. He must have just grown it in, and his parents abandoned him," Elinalise explained. It was impressive how much she knew about, well, anything that wasn't about sex.
The party continued to discuss the baby, meanwhile Paul and Geese disengaged. I glanced down at the still-sleeping baby, and the little guy let out a sneeze in his sleep, and my heart soared at such a cute action. My smile was only momentary, as it dawned on me what if he was still sick. I casted healing magic on him as he started falling asleep. I decided to be safe rather than sorry. I placed my hand on the baby's forehead and began my chant.
"Let this divine power be a satisfying nourishment, giving one who has lost their strength the strength to rise again!" My mana coated the boy in a green light again, and he let out a coo as he continued to nuzzle into me.
"Awwww, isn't someone a worried parent?" Elinalise cooed teasingly as she apparently was done with her serious demeanor and had turned to this softer side.
Before anyone could respond to her, however, we all heard what could only be described as the most adorable yawn. Looking back down, I saw the little guy had finally woken up.
"Did someone have a good nap?" I asked in a sweet tone, trying to copy my mother's tone whenever I saw her with my little sister when she was a baby.
The little guy gurgled a yes. At least I think he did. I held out my index finger, and he was quick to grip it.
"Ohhh, who's a strong little guy~ Don't worry, you're safe with me now~" My smile was impossible to hold back; the baby was just so cute.
'Who could abandon such a sweet boy…'
"Zenith," I was pulled from my sweet moment with the baby by Paul. He was crouched next to me as he looked down at the baby.
"I know you're gonna hate me, but we can't keep him." Paul was serious. I knew he loved to joke, but not this time.
"No!" I immediately declared. "I'm not abandoning him like his good-for-nothing parents!" I don't know how, but somehow, Paul just saying I have to leave the baby lit a fire in my soul far greater than what I felt at that dinner table all those months back.
"Damn it, Zenith! We can't keep a baby in our party!" Paul yelled back."We're adventurers, A Rank ones at that. Our job is already dangerous enough without a baby slowing us down!"
He looked at the rest of the party and pointed to Elinalise.
"Come on, Lina! You have to see I'm right!"
Elinalise looked at Paul and then at me. I unconsciously pulled the child closer to me, my eyes hardened while looking at her.
The elf just smirked back at me.
"You got a point, Paul… But if he stays with Zenith, there shouldn't be an issue. She has Talhand to cover her, and I can help; I have quite the experience in childcare," she said with a smile.
"Well, what about an orphanage!?" Paul bellowed this time. "I'm pretty sure I saw one in the last city; we can drop him off there n-" He was cut off by Talhand throwing his mug at the party leader and hitting him square in the cheek.
"You damn fool! Didn't you listen to what Elinalise said?!" Talhand's question went unanswered as Paul was too busy rubbing his cheek. "Who will go to an orphanage and say, "Yes, I'd like to adopt the one with the demon hair! The perfect kid to play with my children." He'll get bullied and abused before you know it."
"He's sadly right…So Paul, got any bright ideas, or will you stop while you're behind?" Elinalise's question went unanswered as Paul grumbled something incoherent before he turned on his heels and went back to his tent.
"Whatever! Just don't come bitching to me when this backfires or get pissy if the little shit annoys us," Paul shouted as he stormed off, but before he could get into his tent.
"Ung! WAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!"
The baby suddenly started bawling his eyes out. Everyone covered their ears as I rocked him, trying to calm him down. Unfortunately, my method wasn't working.
"There there, I'm here, you're safe," I rocked the baby, but he wouldn't stop crying. "What's wrong with him?!" I shouted over the baby's cries, my heart feeling like it was breaking as I couldn't soothe the baby.
"He must be starving!" Elinalise shouted over the cries, strangely not covering her ears.
"Here I got some water!" Paul cried as he came running over from his tent, only to hit the ground hard when Elinalise tripped him.
"No! You idiot, you can't give an infant water!" Elinalise screamed at Paul as the man rubbed his bloody nose.
"You idiot! Even I know that's stupid!" Ghislaine shouted; she was cringing as the baby's cries echoed through the cave. "By the sacred beast, someone please stop this crying!"
"We need to get him mushy food or milk, but we haven't got anything like that with us," I said worriedly, my rocking was barely able to soothe the emerald-haired baby.
Then Elinalise walked up and held out her arms, signaling to hand over the baby. Reluctantly, I did so. I trusted Elinalise, sure, but I wanted to help, not pass it on to her.
"Don't worry about this, Zenny, I have been a mother several times over my life. I just need to get back into this."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Simple, I'm able to produce milk. Even though it's been a while since I last fed a baby," Elinalise answered as she pulled down one side of her shirt and exposed one of her breasts.
"Elinalise!"
While I reacted with surprise, Paul, on the other hand, saw this and started leering at the elf.
"Heyyy~ You think I can have some? Bet there's more than enough to share," he said with a creepily suggestive tone.
I swiftly retaliated, slapping that perverted smile away
"Owwww what was that for?!" He cried out as he rubbed his swelling cheek.
"You needed to be punished…" I spit out venomously. "Perv."
Strangely, the crying was now replaced with Elinalise giggling. I turned to see that, strangely enough, the baby wasn't feeding on Elinalise. I rushed over to see that the little guy was red in the face, almost as if he was embarrassed.
"Hehe, don't be so shy," Elinalise giggled as she held the baby closer. "Never thought I needed to coax a man to go for my breast."
Paul started to look at us with that creepy grin, but one glare from me had him stop himself. I turned back to Elinalise as, having had enough of the baby's embarrassment, she held him closer and started tickling his stomach. After a few seconds, the baby let out a laugh, which Elinalise used to get him to latch onto her exposed breast. She giggled as the baby started suckling ravenously on her breast.
"Hehe, for a shy baby, he's definitely hungry," Elinalise giggled as the baby finally started feeding.
With the crisis over and done with, the party slowly made their way to their tents. I noticed Ghislaine had started going to Paul's, but went to hers instead as she rubbed her ears. Soon it was just me, Elinalise, and the baby around the campfire.
"Sooooo, you're going to adopt this little guy?" Elinalise asked as the party's newest member burped.
"Why wouldn't I? It's the right thing to do, and he'll need someone to care for him." I don't know why, but I felt a feeling of anger start to bubble up in my chest as I saw Elinalise rocking the baby to sleep.
She looked so at home doing this; then again, she said she's had children, and based on her lifestyle, I could see that, like I wouldn't be surprised in a few years, Paul had multiple children across the region.
"I just wanted to make sure you had the conviction to do this. This sort of thing isn't something you can half-ass." Elinalise's tone went serious as she looked at me. "You're gonna make mistakes, and you'll have days where you'll question if you're even worthy to be a parent. But just remember: this little one comes first, and if you need help, ask. No one person alone has all the answers. But most importantly," Elinalise got closer now as her eyes stared into my soul. "If someday you find love and start a family, don't forget this little one," she held out the baby for me. Without hesitation, I pulled him into my embrace and looked down at him.
"I won't," I replied, looking up at Elinalise again.
"Good… Now you head to bed. I'll take the first watch tonight," Elinalise dismissed me as she went to grab some more firewood. "If he needs another feeding, just call!"
I walked over to my tent, and once inside, I came across a slight issue: we didn't have a crib for the baby. Thinking quickly, I grabbed some extra blankets and fashioned a small bed for the baby boy. It wasn't perfect, but it should be comfortable enough for him and relatively safe. I placed him gently into the bed, and as I placed the blanket over him, the little one chose now to wake up again.
"Hehe, don't worry, this won't be permanent. The next inn we're at, you'll get a proper bed. You can even help me keep Paul away from any girls." I giggled at imagining us trying to restrain Paul's libido.
I crawled onto my rollout and smiled at the baby. He got a bit fussy till I held out my hand to him. When he retook the tip of my index finger, it looked like he had calmed down. The contact with my finger seemed to soothe him. I thought back on Elinalise's words. I know I'm old enough to bear children, but this felt so rushed. Yet, as I saw the little one slowly fall back asleep while still gripping my index finger, I knew it was right. It felt right.
"You can relax. Mama's right here now. And I won't be going anywhere." I whispered as fatigue finally started to take me, and I fell asleep.
Izuku
While I still had a limited understanding of the vocabulary, I understood what the girl said, or at least I understood what she meant. I heard her say 'mama'. She was, at best, sixteen, and wanted to become a parent. More particularly, she wanted to be my parent. Me, the boy who was abandoned for a reason I still don't know. Yet her smile seemed so sincere, it was clear she didn't want to give up on me.
'Strange… This girl who found me cares more for me than my biological mother ever did in the last two months," I thought. 'Heck, from what I saw, most of her team showed more worry for me than either of my parents did. I still hate this limited understanding of their language, but hopefully I'll get more proficient with it soon.'
Granted, it was embarrassing to suddenly have the elf try to shove her breast in my face. It was hard enough with my birth mother in this world.
'Classic… I can say, "I won't be a coward anymore," but that doesn't mean I just don't become a coward just like that,' I thought to myself. I looked back over to the girl. 'I think I understood her name, it was Zenny or Zenith, I believe.'
Still, I couldn't believe what I had discovered. Beast folk, elves, and I'm positive I saw my new mother channel something that made me feel better. It had to be magic.
'All the evidence, including what I saw before today, means not only have I been reincarnated, but I've been reincarnated into a fantasy world! ' My head buzzed in anticipation at what I could do.
'Sure, I won't be able to do everything, but if I work hard enough, I could become a mage, a knight, or maybe even be someone who helps advance technology in this world! Though I don't think I could really do the last one very well. I knew things, but I wasn't exactly a super genius. I don't think I could show anyone how to make gunpowder, batteries, or more commercial stuff like ramen or cola….' I don't know why, but I feel speedrunning humanity's technological progress wasn't in my ballpark.
I looked up to the roof of the tent as the possibilities flowed through me.
'I can't go home…But I can't make the same mistakes again. When I get old enough, I'm not going to sit around anymore. I'm going to find my talent in this new world. If I can't do one thing, then I'll focus on something else. I can't let my lack of talent in something hold me back an-' my internal monologue was interrupted as the girl nudged closer to my makeshift bed. Her smile grew a bit as she got closer, possibly sensing I was closer to her. My heart warmed at this sight.
'...And I'll be a better son.'
Notes:
Another chapter is here and got Izuku new adoptive parent here. So yeah, kinda obvious Zenith is Izuku's new mother but wanted Izuku to be there on day one. Also, while I like Elinelise, I don't think her being Izuku's parent be the best atm, but she does deseve auntie role. Also annoyed, recently learned some artwork I had set for later was made with AI, and it hurt more as I knew the guy for years and even helped make Nihan look for Demon protector, thankfully I know someone who's up to remake them and at the very least these fakes can help with proper art. Will drop a link to their Twitter page when I use it, though be a while as the stuff isn't at the front of their queue.
Hope you have a great day and you enjoyed this chapter.
