Chapter Text
Inside the room provided to Jinwoo, he took a mental peek at his sister and mother through the shadow he had left with them. He made the shadow give him a mental report of his family's day while he was gone. He was mildly surprised to find out that not a day had passed since he left. He'll figure out the time difference sometime else, for now, he figured that he'll return to Korea when a day has passed there.
He's almost glad for the time difference, as it will let him stay longer to research as much as he can regarding the other Monarchs. He got up and scanned the item of clothing inside the closet of the room provided for him. He thought a change of pants would be good, and a simple shirt again would be suitable.
He's fairly certain that most people don't wear layers of layers of clothes like Tywin and his family. He thought that it was due to Tywin's standing as the Lord of the land and the other plethora of titles that are too long for Jinwoo to memorize. As he got changed, he thought to himself that he should probably learn the lay of the land. Perhaps he will learn something, be led to information regarding the Monarchs.
He exited his room. A sound got him tilting his head to the side. It was a sound of crying. With sure steps, he followed the sound.
He guessed that he was in a nursery from how the room looked, though the décor wouldn't be the same as the décor that could be found in a modern nursery; he figured the cradle was enough of a sign for it to be so. He peeked inside the cradle and saw the odd baby Tywin was holding when he first met the Lord. The babe is almost purple from crying so much. Even though Jinwoo wasn't familiar in taking care of babies, he knew the basics.
He reached for the baby and held it close to his chest. He started swaying. The crying didn't stop. He sniffed the air to know if the baby needed changing. When he didn't smell anything foul, he figured that the baby was hungry.
He looked around. He didn't see any that could be food or could contain food. He decided that he would look for the kitchen then. For now, he used his pinky as a pacifier.
He walked, slowly and surely, even though he didn't know where the kitchen could be found. He figured that he could follow the voices that were distant from him. When he did so, he entered a room that was filled with soldiers. Not the kitchen then, he thought to himself.
"Do you know where the kitchen is?" He asked in his accented English. "The babe is hungry."
The soldiers were silent for a moment till one got up to his feet and saluted Jinwoo. "I can lead you to the kitchen, m'lord, and have one of the men look for the wetnurse."
Jinwoo doesn't know what a wet nurse was; it must be something related to the baby. After all, the soldier wouldn't have offered something not related to what they were speaking about. "You have my thanks." He said with a nod. From the peripheral of his eye, he saw someone get up and rush out.
Soon, Jinwoo and the soldier were making their way to the kitchen. While the walls all look similar to each other, Jinwoo had been to enough dungeons to see the minuscule differences in the wall—enough to be a reminder for him when he needs to venture into the kitchen on his own again.
Once they found the kitchen, Jinwoo pretty much had the same reception as when he saw the soldiers—though these people were much more nervous. A plate of food was served to him the moment he was seated, but none of it was appropriate for the baby.
"Is there something the baby can eat?" He asked, not directing the question to anyone specific. The pinky trick wouldn't hold forever, he is certain of that. "Perhaps some milk?"
"Of course, m'lord." One of the female servants moved quickly. She poured milk into a leather skin container that had a horn at the end of it.
Jinwoo did his best to balance the baby in one arm and hold the milk in the other. He supposes this is the medieval equivalent of a baby bottle. The baby had become more peaceful now that he is being fed. Jinwoo couldn't help but let out a satisfied hum.
There was a chorus of 'm'lord' around him that got him looking up from the baby. Tywin was there, standing imposingly and making people even more nervous. "I heard him crying." He explained. "It didn't seem that he needed changing or rocking, so he was hungry. I don't mean to overstep, but it's not good to just let the baby cry. It will affect his development."
"I apologize," Tywin said tersely. Jinwoo can imagine that the lord of the castle isn't used to apologizing.
"No need for apologies." He said simply, looking back at the babe. "I can imagine that no one heard the crying because of how big the castle is." The babe was enthusiastically drinking the milk provided. Jinwoo can only imagine how hungry he is. He hummed under his breath. "Perhaps more than one caretaker is needed—you call it a wetnurse, I believe, that way if she needs to take a break, someone would be present if the baby needs anything."
"Of course." Tywin nodded. "That shall be done immediately, Lord Jinwoo."
There was some shuffling in the back. Jinwoo turned his head and saw a woman, probably just a few years older than him, looking quite guilty. He can hazard a guess that the woman probably needed to have breakfast as well and didn't expect the baby to wake up at this hour. He knows that babies can be unpredictable at the start.
"The wet nurse can take over from here, Lord Jinwoo," Tywin said to him. "We can break our fast with the rest of the family."
"Of course." Jinwoo got up to his feet and walked towards the wet nurse. He was careful in handing the baby over to her without removing the milk from the baby's mouth.
Tywin led him out of the kitchen, not noticing how the servants were giving each other looks—especially the wetnurse.
Tywin was quite displeased with what happened that morning. He didn't think that the wet nurse would be so incompetent. He decided to remove her as a wet nurse and employ two new ones. He took the Stranger's suggestion.
Tywin inwardly scoffed at the word—suggestion. He knows most certainly it wasn't. From the way the Stranger doted on the child, there was a care to it that seemed foreign but undeniable. It's as if the Stranger can already tell the child's future. Perhaps the God does, Tywin thought to himself, after all, if someone could see someone's future, it would make sense if it were the God that collects people's souls after death.
Jinwoo was quiet during the breaking of their fast. When Genna reminded Cersei and Jaime of their history lessons with the Maester, Jinwoo politely asked Tywin if he could join the children for it. Genna threw Tywin concerned looks. Tywin easily agreed. He is aware enough that he can't say no to a God, but he did mention that he will be joining the children as well. It is about time for him to assess his children's education.
The Maester was all but shaking upon seeing both Tywin and Jinwoo. Though Tywin knew that the evident fear was primarily due to the Stranger. The man may not worship the seven but he can't deny the existence of Gods—especially when one is right in front of him.
After stating their intention, the Maester went to teach the children. Tywin was satisfied that both Jaime and Cersei were listening intently. It shows when the Maester questioned them about their previous lesson. Though Jaime was more hesitant in his answer than Cersei. Tywin is sure that it will fade in time.
The lesson turned to the Targaryen, how they conquered Westeros with their dragons and how they have kept their lineage pure.
"What?" Jinwoo exclaimed, making everyone tense up.
"W-what do y-you mean, my Lord?" Creylen stuttered his question. Tywin was tempted to roll his eyes. He is certain that the Septons have preached about how the seven don't look kindly on incestuous marriages.
"They can't possibly be marrying and having children with their sisters?" Jinwoo looked particularly appalled by this.
Tywin supposes that the Septons got something right about the Gods. He cleared his throat. He'd better say something before Creylen becomes the target of the God's displeasure. It isn't the man's fault that the Targaryens practice such a thing in keeping their line pure. "I believe they do so to keep their blood pure, my lord." He has the God's attention now. "Since they are of Valyrian descent and were once dragonlords, the Faith of the Seven has…given way for them to continue with the practice due to this."
Jinwoo outright scoffed at this. "Ridiculous, that kind of practice will bring more trouble than keeping their lineage 'pure'," he gestured with his hands in a way that Tywin had never seen, but it did add more sarcasm to the word. "Tell me, have any of them given birth to someone disfigured or mentally ill?"
Ah, so there is a reason why the Faith of the Seven preaches this, Tywin thought to himself. "There… have been past kings who have shown…cruelty but not the illness of the mind—at least not to the extent that we know." He added. After all, behind closed doors, no one knows exactly what the Kings do, and the Kingsguard are sworn to not say a word about it.
"Tendency towards violence and aggression is already a sign of it. Some signs would…lie in wait till a catalyst happens." Jinwoo stated. "Also, I highly doubt that they're the only ones who were of Valyrian descent. They could have kept their blood 'pure'," again with the tone, Tywin thought to himself, "without the risk of mental illness. I know that marrying a second cousin would lessen the chances of that—even physical deformities, but unless people have a clear history of marriages of the family or in it…" Jinwoo quieted down, as if he was thinking of something. "I know that there is a village…from the world I am from, a man married his second cousin without realizing that they are related closer than they realize, and they had a child that didn't have any limbs."
Tywin's world came to a halt upon hearing that. Joanna was his first cousin. Could it be? He will have to look into it. For now, he shook off the thought to focus on the present.
"What does catalyst mean?" Cersei asked.
"A life-changing event," Jinwoo answered her. "It can push a person's mind to its limits, and children born out of incest…well, their minds are more prone to breaking."
Tywin noticed Cersei throwing a look towards Jaime but he didn't have time to think about it. Creylen spoke up. "My lord, if you don't mind me asking, is there a way to prove this?"
Jinwoo looked at them, considering. Tywin is impressed by the mercy the God has been showing to those around him. "It involves studying something that can't be immediately seen by the eyes. We call it genetics, which studies the genes of people. Like…" he looked at Tywin, "Have you noticed that people related to Tywin have blond hair and green eyes?"
"Yes, my lord," Creylen answered with a nod.
"If someone of Tywin's family marries someone outside of their family, their child will probably be a mix of two parents—unless one characteristic of the parent is stronger than the other," Jinwoo explained. "In my world, dark hair and dark eyes are dominant. If someone of dark hair and dark eyes marries someone with light hair and light eyes, the children from their union will be a mix, with probably most children having dark hair and dark eyes."
This made Tywin think of Genna's children.
"If you want proof of deformities or mental illness, you can try breeding animals and see what the results will be," Jinwoo added. "I'm sure there is a farmer somewhere that had a cow that doesn't look right."
"I will visit some farms when I get the time, my lord," Creylen said. "Would you mind if I share this knowledge with the Citadel, my lord?"
"You should," Jinwoo said simply. "Hopefully, that would make people think twice before engaging in any incestuous relationship."
"I'm sure a proof of why the Seven forbids such practice would enlighten many, my lord," Tywin said to Jinwoo. Though he knows that some people are simply too craven to listen to reason.
Creylen is not a man of Faith. He had become a Maester for the pursuit of science after all. Hearing about the God, he was doubtful of it. Facing the God, he may have become a believer. It wasn't just because the God was standing right in front of him, no. It was because the God had given proof as to why the Gods had been against incest. Well, while there is a reason, Creylen decided to hold his worship before he talked to any farmer who had dealt with animal husbandry and saw the things that the God had spoken about.
He made a quick trip to Lannisport. He knows that there are merchants there who are selling goats and sheep. Perhaps a farmer would be present. If not, he can certainly ask a merchant where to find one.
He stood in front of the stall, looking at the goats and taking note that there didn't seem to be anything wrong with them. He supposes that they wouldn't sell any goat or sheep that is ill-formed. He cleared his throat before speaking to the person manning the stall. "Are you the farmer who bred the goats?"
The man narrowed his eyes at him, looking at him suspiciously. "What does it matter to you?"
"I am a Maester." He said, as dignified as he could. "I have questions regarding…how the goats are bred."
The man looks less suspicious of him now, but he does look at Creylen all confused-like. "What about the breeding?" He asked. "The goats are young, the meat still tender, if that's what you want to know."
"Have you had…ill-formed goats before?" He kept his voice low, not sure about the etiquette in asking about things like this. He doesn't think it would be good for business if people hear.
The man looked offended by that. "I'm not new to farming animals, Maester." Creylen's title was said sarcastically. "I know how to properly breed animals that they don't come out broken from the womb."
The answer gave Creylen some hope. "So, it does happen then? Ill-formed animals?"
The man stared at him for a while. Then, nodded. "Aye, happens when a farmer isn't careful with making sure that the animals don't inbreed. Once or twice would maybe not lead to deformed animals but they don't act right sometimes. So, it's safer to make sure the animals don't inbreed at all."
It was Creylen's turn to nod, trying to make sure that he remembers all the details the farmer was telling him.
"Why's a Maester interested in farming animals?"
"Oh." He paused. He thought that it wouldn't hurt to share the newfound knowledge that he has. After all, the Stranger was keen on making sure people didn't do any incestuous acts. "I've heard that the same thing happens with humans, that inbreeding would lead to ill-formed babies and…be prone to acts of aggression."
"Huh." The farmer breathed out. "' makes sense, I s'pose. There have been too many cruel kings before."
Creylen was sure that the last part wasn't meant to be heard. So, he acted like he didn't hear it at all. "Thank you for answering my question." He pulled out a gold dragon from his purse and gave it to the farmer. "I'll let the kitchen in the Casterly Rock buy goats from you, knowing that you follow the proper breeding method." He wasn't sure what would happen if an inbred animal were eaten, but he wouldn't want to find out.
"You can buy two goats with this gold." The farmer said with amazement.
"That is payment for the information you have given me."
"This is too much for that information. At least take one goat."
"Not at all!" Creylen exclaimed with a laugh. "Most farmers who practice husbandry may know of that information, but the general populace doesn't. I'm going to write to the Citadel and tell them of it. Perhaps they will try and prove it to be true as well, since we cannot do the same with humans, the closest thing we can do it too is to animals."
"You're the first Maester that I've ever met." The farmer told him. "Are you lot a weird bunch?"
That just made Creylen laugh louder. "Mayhaps." He answered. "Have a good day." The farmer nodded back at him and pocketed the gold coin given to him.
Creylen started making his way to Casterly Rock. He knows why Lord Lannister asked him to look into the marriage history of the Lannisters. He can admit to being nervous about what he will find. Either way, he doesn't think that it will be good.
He was present during Lady Joanna's childbirth. Even before the labor, the pregnancy had been difficult. He had voiced to both Lady and Lord that she shouldn't be doing any work for fear of making the pregnancy even more difficult than it was. But, even with the care during the pregnancy, the labor had been a battle for Lady Joanna.
After the birth, she bled a lot. Creylen did whatever he could, but since the wound was inside the Lady, there was only so much that he could do. After all, cutting the Lady open to help with the birth would also be fatal to her. At the end, he could only make sure that Lady Joanna was comfortable on her deathbed.
Inside the library, Creylen went to search for the book containing the marriage records of the Lannisters. He also grabbed parchments, a quill and ink. He plans to write down just who and how many Lannisters wedded their cousins. From what the Stranger told them, marrying second cousins would be fine as long as they don't have any close relations in the line.
As he started reading, it didn't take long before he wrote down names and how closely related the two Lannisters who married. He has a feeling that there will be more down the line. If he is correct, he half-wonders if Lord Lannister's attitude towards his youngest son would change. After all, the babe is innocent; it can even be said that it's Lord Lannister's fault for marrying his first cousin.
