Chapter 212 - Confronting Ouranos

The descent into the Guild's depths was a journey through layers of silence and shadow. Each step carried Damien further from the noise of Orario's surface, deeper into a realm where time itself seemed to move differently. The air grew cooler, thicker, carrying the faint scent of ancient stone and forgotten knowledge.

The final door stood before him, massive and unadorned. Before he could reach for it, it swung open on silent hinges.

Fels stood in the doorway, their form hidden beneath the same dark robes that had always obscured their identity. They inclined their head....a gesture of respect, nothing more...and stepped aside.

Damien walked in.

The chamber was vast, its ceiling lost in shadow, its walls lined with shelves that held relics of ages long past. At the center of it all, seated upon a throne of stone that seemed to grow from the floor itself, was Ouranos.

The god's eyes were ancient, carrying the weight of millennia. They studied Damien with a gaze that saw through flesh and bone, through time and space, to the very core of his being.

"Damien Ardent," Ouranos said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very stones. "A god now."

Damien stopped a few feet from the throne, his hands clasped behind his back. His smile was thin, knowing. "I suppose I am. A god..." He paused, his gaze meeting Ouranos's. "But not like the others. And you knew that."

Ouranos nodded slowly, a faint, almost imperceptible smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "I did. From the moment you first set foot in this city, I felt it. The weight of your soul. The shadow that clings to you like a second skin." He leaned forward slightly. "It was not my role to tell you. Some truths must be discovered on one's own. To be handed a destiny is to be robbed of the journey."

Damien laughed....a genuine, warm sound that echoed through the chamber. "I should've expected it, really. The moment you started calling me the 'Shadow Monarch,' I should've known you were hinting at something more."

"A name is a powerful thing," Ouranos replied. "It carries meaning, even if the one who bears it does not yet understand."

Damien's expression shifted, the humor fading into something more contemplative. "The past... it's difficult, isn't it? It haunts Orario. Haunts the world. Even now, we feel the echoes of what came before."

Ouranos was silent for a long moment. When he spoke, his voice carried a note of ancient sorrow. "Yes. The past is never truly gone. It lingers in the cracks of the present, waiting to resurface."

Damien's jaw tightened. A bitter edge crept into his voice. "Why?" The question hung in the air, sharp and demanding. "Why did you do nothing? You could have helped. Either side. You could have done something about the gods, the mortals, the dragons. You had the power. You had the wisdom. But you just... watched."

Ouranos's smile was sad, but not regretful. "Because neither side deserved my aid. The gods were corrupt, their ambitions blinding them to the suffering they caused. The mortals were consumed by their own hatred, their own desire for vengeance. The dragons..." He paused, his gaze growing distant. "The dragons were victims, yes. But they, too, were capable of cruelty. Of destruction. To choose a side would have been to endorse their flaws."

"So you chose neutrality," Damien said, his voice flat.

"I chose wisdom," Ouranos corrected gently. "To stand above the fray is not to be indifferent. It is to see the full picture, to understand that both sides were driven by forces beyond their control. Neither side deserved me. And so I remained apart."

Damien's eyes narrowed. "And yet, in the end, you did interfere. You helped defeat Anu. You helped imprison him. Why? What changed?"

Ouranos's smile deepened, a flicker of something ancient and knowing passing across his features. "I only intervened when the Shadow asked."

The words hung in the air like a revelation.

Damien's breath caught. The pieces of the puzzle shifted, clicking into place with a clarity that sent a chill down his spine. The full truth of the past unfolded before him, a tapestry of betrayal and war and sacrifice.

The gods, in their arrogance, had sought to claim the world that belonged to the dragons. They corrupted the mortals, turning them against their true masters. And in the chaos that followed, the Mother of Dragons... Ki... had been slain.

Her death had changed everything.

The dragons, once divided, had united in grief and rage. They had attacked Heaven itself, their fury unchecked, their power unmatched. And in the midst of that war, one being had risen above them all.

The Shadow Monarch.

He had pushed back the dragons, defended Heaven, restored balance to the world. But when Anu returned and found his wife dead, madness had consumed him. He had sought to reform the world entirely, to reshape reality in his image.

And Ouranos, the neutral observer, the god who had refused to take sides, had finally moved.

Because the Shadow Monarch had asked him to.

The realization struck Damien like a physical blow. The Shadow Monarch had seen the destruction that Anu's madness would bring. He had reached out to the one being who could stand beside him, the one being who had remained apart from the conflict.

Together, they had defeated Anu, imprisoned him, and brought an end to the war. Antares had gone into hiding. The gods and dragons had signed a treaty, their conflict finally at an end.

Damien exhaled slowly, his mind reeling.

Ouranos watched him, his expression serene. "You have come to an answer now, haven't you?"

Damien met his gaze, his voice steady and certain. "Yes. I've decided."

"And what is your decision?"

Damien's smile was sharp, cold, and utterly confident. "World dominion."

Ouranos laughed...a deep, rumbling sound that filled the chamber. "I was hoping you would say that. But tell me... is it a mindless one? A conquest born of hunger and ambition?"

Damien shook his head slowly. "No. To me, gods... dragons... mortals... man... whatever or whoever... they are all equal to each other." He paused, his voice dropping to something colder. "And beneath me."

Ouranos's laughter faded, replaced by a look of profound interest. "Go on."

Damien stepped closer, his presence seeming to fill the room. "Through my will, they will be guided to peace. I will unite the world, not through fear, but through purpose. And if that peace comes with a little bit of force..." His smile sharpened. "Then that depends entirely on them."

Ouranos studied him for a long moment. Then he laughed again, this time with a warmth that seemed to light up the ancient chamber. "You are truly something else, Damien Ardent. I shall allow it. The Grand Unification Plan. You have my blessing."

Damien's smile widened. "I was going to do it regardless of your permission."

Ouranos inclined his head, a gesture of respect. "I know. That is precisely why I am giving it."

Damien turned to leave, his footsteps echoing through the chamber. As he reached the door, he paused, glancing back.

"You.....Will you fight with me....If he returns?" asked Damien

"If The Shadows asks....Yes...I will...However....I have a feeling the Shadow....is ready to lead without me....To raise above me." Replied Ouranos

Damien nodded Then walked out
