A massive cloud of dust rose above the southern highway as hundreds of screeching green monsters marched behind roaring converted trucks.
"Militia riflemen, take defensive positions along the sandbag ramparts!" the defender ordered, her voice echoing along the southern wall.
"Keep your rifle sights trained on the lead trucks!"
"Major Cole's soldiers have deployed two machine gun nests at the gate towers," the frost mage reported, pointing toward the elevated parapets.
"The firing lanes cover the entire highway approach!"
"We have three thousand rounds of linked ammunition loaded in the belts!"
"Our gunners are zeroed on their lead radiator grille!"
"Seed snares and briar barricades are primed across both road shoulders," the plant user added, resting both hands on her focus staff.
"Any beast that attempts to flank our walls will be shredded instantly!"
"We will protect our greenhouses and residential blocks from any raider attack!"
"Our defenses will hold against any number of wild scavengers!"
"Look at the lead vehicle," the dark-haired striker said, narrowing her dark eyes through the midday heat haze.
"That truck has spiked armor plating welded over the cab."
"They have chained goblins walking ahead as meat shields," the young sovereign observed, stepping up to the battlement railing.
"A typical raider tactic designed to draw defensive fire."
"They want us to expend our ammunition before their heavy fighters engage."
At the front of the raiding convoy, an armored flatbed truck screeched to a halt eighty yards before the Citadel gate.
Over forty chained goblins were herded forward by twenty-five heavily armed human outlaws wielding modified weapons and shields.
Stepping down from the truck cab was Derek, a towering outlaw with a scarred scalp and a massive flaming battleaxe resting on his shoulder.
He spat onto the dirt, looking up at the high school walls with arrogant amusement.
"Hey, little high school kids!" Derek yelled, his coarse voice carrying across the open highway.
"I hear there is a teenage punk in there playing king over the whole campus!"
"Step out and bend the knee to the Iron Dogs right now!"
"Hand over all your food, your ammunition crates, and fifty female survivors for our camp!"
"We burned down three shopping malls and wiped out two police stations on our way here!"
"Nobody stands against the Iron Dogs in this sector of the city!"
"We crushed every survivor group that refused our demands!"
"Do that, and we might let the rest of you live as our farming slaves!"
"If you refuse, we burn your gates down and feed your bodies to our goblin hounds!"
The outlaws laughed loudly, banging their machetes and axes against their truck doors in a chaotic, mocking clamor.
Up on the ramparts, the militia fighters gripped their weapons with tight knuckles, tension mounting with every passing second.
"Do you want me to freeze their truck engine right now?" Vasa whispered, frost swirling around her fingertips.
"No need to waste squad mana on common wasteland vermin," the First Player answered calmly, stepping onto the south gate threshold.
"Open the gate."
"Opening the central gate!" Kendra called out, signaling the gate operators to draw the bolts.
The gate swung outward, and Nox stepped through the opening alone, his black coat fluttering in the dry afternoon wind.
He walked twenty paces onto the open road, stopping with his hands resting casually in his coat pockets.
Derek stared at the lone youth standing before five hundred screeching monsters, bursting into mocking laughter.
"They sent out a scrawny kid to beg for mercy!" the outlaw chieftain sneered, hefting his flaming battleaxe with both hands.
"Look at this pathetic little high school king!"
"Do you really think a black trench coat makes you a sovereign ruler?"
"I am going to chop you in half and mount your skull on my radiator grille!"
"Less talking, more swinging," the young sovereign replied, his voice calm and indifferent amidst the roar of the goblin horde.
"Your flaming axe looks worth about twenty contribution credits at our armory."
"You came all this way just to deliver free experience points to our doorstep."
"Let's see if your combat skills match your oversized mouth."
"Die, arrogant punk!" Derek roared, his body igniting with crimson fire mana as he sprinted forward with terrifying speed.

The outlaw leaped ten feet into the air, bringing his blazing battleaxe down in a thunderous vertical execution strike.
"Void Edge... awaken and cleave!"
The First Player whispered the command, drawing his ground steel blade in a single blinding motion.
A razor-sharp rift of midnight purple spatial energy encased the metal edge, humming with terrifying dimensional power.
"Shadow Stride... shift!"
Nox dissolved into purple spatial particles a split second before the flaming axe struck the road.
He reappeared instantly behind Derek's descending form, his void-infused blade tracing a silent, flawless horizontal arc through the air.
The spatial rift sliced effortlessly through the solid steel axe shaft, the outlaw's armor plating, and Derek's chest in one clean stroke.
Derek landed heavily on the road, looking down in absolute horror as his flaming axe head clattered into the dirt.
A thin line of purple light pulsed across his torso before his upper body slid cleanly from his waist in a spray of dark blood.

The highway fell into dead, suffocating silence as hundreds of outlaws and goblins stared at their bisected leader.
"The boss... he killed Derek in one strike!" an outlaw lieutenant screamed in pure panic, dropping his weapon to the dirt.
"He cut through a fire-infused steel axe like it was paper!"
"Run for the trucks... get us out of here right now!"
"Citadel militia... fire at will!" Yeda's voice rang out from the high ramparts like a clarion bell.
"Wipe them out!"
"Leave zero raiders standing on our road!"
The south gate walls erupted in a coordinated storm of lethal firepower as soldiers and militia members opened fire simultaneously.
Vasa unleashed a massive frost wave that froze the front tires of all three outlaw trucks into solid ice blocks.
Emilia channeled thick thorny briars that shot through the highway tarmac, wrapping around the fleeing outlaws and dragging them down.
Yeda and Kendra charged through the gate at the head of twenty awakened militia fighters, hunting down the scattered raiders.
Within five minutes of chaotic slaughter, all twenty-five human outlaws and forty goblin hounds lay dead along the highway approach.
The remaining four hundred goblin scavengers scattered in absolute terror, fleeing into the distant ruins of the city.

Nox picked up the box, inspecting the two glowing armor-piercing hollow-point rounds nestled inside the foam.
"Two Rank E armor-piercing hollow-point rounds," the youth murmured, storing the ammunition inside his Dimensional Pocket.
"These two rounds are reserved for the true Rexar when his subterranean core awakens."
"They will punch straight through his true warden skull."
He walked over to the dying outlaw lieutenant who was pinned beneath a collapsed truck wheel.
"Who sent your gang to attack our sanctuary?" the First Player asked, pressing the tip of his void blade against the man's neck.
"Speak, and you might receive a clean death."
"Tell me who gave you our exact coordinates."
"It was... an off-world entity... through the cosmic channel," the dying raider coughed, blood bubbling at the corners of his lips.
"A voice calling itself... the Lord of Carnage... offered us ten thousand coins to test your defenses..."
"He wanted to see... if the First Player was worthy of his divine patronage..."
"He said... the cosmic arena was watching you..."
With a final gasp, the lieutenant went limp against the wheel, his eyes glazing over in death.
"A cosmic patron named the Lord of Carnage," Yeda noted, stepping up beside Nox and cleaning her blade with a cloth.
"They are actively hiring human raiders from the heavens to probe our strength."
"They view this entire apocalypse as a game for their amusement," the youth said coldly, looking up at the afternoon sky.
"Let them watch all they want from their high thrones."
"Every time they send pawns to test our walls, we will harvest their experience and take their loot."
"We will turn their little cosmic entertainment into our personal ascension," the striker smiled, sheathing her weapons.
"Kendra, organize a recovery detail to strip the trucks of usable engine parts and steel armor plates," Nox instructed, looking over the burning vehicles.
"We can weld these plates onto our perimeter watchtowers," the defender agreed with a grin.
"And Vasa, have the supply team inventory the captured fuel tanks and ammunition crates."
"We recovered over eighty gallons of diesel fuel and five hundred rifle rounds!" the frost mage reported happily.
"That gives our generators enough fuel to run the water purification pumps for another two weeks!"
"Emilia, check the wounded militia members and administer herbal poultices."
"Only two fighters took minor shrapnel scratches, and they are already fully treated," the plant user smiled, tucking her salve jars away.
"Let's haul these weapons, ammunition crates, and skill manuals into the Citadel vault."
"The survivors in the workshop are eager to forge new armor from this scrap metal."
"Take everything into the vault and distribute the skill manuals to our top militia recruits," Nox ordered, turning back toward the gate.
"Tonight, we prepare for the divine patrons who think they own this world."
"We will make them pay a price for every spectator ticket."
"The First Citadel stands undefeated!" the militia roared from the battlements, raising their rifles in triumphant salute.
