Morning mist drifted across the shattered avenues of the downtown commercial district as three scouts advanced through the overgrown ruins.
"Keep your footsteps light and stick close to the storefronts," the First Player whispered, sweeping his tactical display across the tangled foliage.
"The ambient mana concentration here is five times denser than the school perimeter."
"Every lobby we pass is covered in glowing fungal caps," the frost mage said, keeping her focus staff pressed close to her chest.
"The dimensional merge altered this entire business quarter in less than forty-eight hours."
"Look at the thick vines climbing those fifty-story office towers," the dark-haired striker murmured, testing the balance of her tungsten cutter.
"They are weeping purple sap."
"Those are predatory mana creepers," Vasa explained, studying a dangling tendril with narrowed eyes.
"If any warm-blooded creature brushes those leaves, the whole root cluster snaps shut within seconds."
"We stay on the center pavement and keep clear of the masonry," Nox instructed, tracking several massive thermal signatures moving along the upper skyline.
"Keep your eyes on the elevated roadway."
"Look at the way the roadway buckled into jagged ridges near the storm drains," the striker added, gesturing toward a series of deep fractures.
"Something massive burrowed right beneath the main boulevard."
"Those tracks belong to subterranean burrowers from the deeper rifts," the youth replied, analyzing the claw markings etched into the curb.
"They hunt by ground vibrations, so we avoid rapid sprinting until we reach open ground."
Coiled across the collapsed overpass was an enormous serpent beast, its emerald scales gleaming beneath the overcast sky.
The creature slept soundly, its deep breaths dropping loose gravel and plaster fragments into the street below.

"That beast measures at least one hundred feet from snout to tail," the striker whispered, tilting her head as she calculated attack angles.
"A single sweep of that tail would flatten an entire commercial block."
"A Rank D+ field boss," the youth noted, guiding their route around the massive support pillars.
"We leave it sleeping for now."
"Our primary task is scouting the perimeter of the black obelisk."
"We cannot engage high-tier field bosses without our full frontline and defensive emplacements," the frost mage agreed with a nod.
"Let's move through the sunken plaza to avoid waking it."
"The sunken walkway provides continuous overhead cover from any flying predators roosting on the upper balconies," the striker observed, vaulting over a shattered turnstile.
"We can cut through the department store concourse to bypass the exposed intersection."
Suddenly, the sharp whistle of an arrow echoed down the avenue, accompanied by the panicked cries of fighting men.
"Hold the perimeter... do not let them flank our rear!" an urgent voice screamed from the plaza ahead.
"They are shifting through the shadows... my bow sights cannot track their speed!"
"Our vanguard shield line just collapsed!" a second voice yelled in sheer terror.
"Fall back toward the fountain before they surround us all!"
The three Citadel scouts sprinted forward, slipping behind the stone fountain basin of a ruined corporate courtyard.
In the center of the square, four fighters wearing gold-trimmed armor were trapped by five shadowy predators.
The beasts moved like liquid ink, their four-legged forms darting between patches of dim light with unnatural agility.
Three gold-armored fighters already lay motionless on the pavement, their breastplates torn open by jagged claws.
The lone survivor was a silver-haired archer, firing luminous mana arrows from an engraved recurve bow.

"Those are Titan Guild enforcers," Vasa whispered, recognizing the embossed emblem on the fallen round shields.
"That archer will not survive another twenty seconds against five Rank E+ stalkers."
"Vasa, drop a frost storm across the center of the courtyard!" Nox commanded, drawing his ground steel blade.
"Force them out of their shadow stealth!"
"Glacial Nova... freeze the shadows!" the frost mage shouted, thrusting her open palms toward the frozen pool.
A wide wave of crystalline frost blasted across the courtyard, coating the pavement and surrounding pillars in brilliant blue rime.
The intense cold instantly shattered the shadow camouflage of all five predators, exposing their dark forms against the pale ice.
"Void Edge... activate!"
The First Player vanished from the fountain rim with `[Shadow Stride]`, reappearing instantly above the lead stalker.
His void-wrapped blade cut through the monster's neck with surgical precision, taking the head before the beast could shriek.

Beside him, Yeda charged forward with vicious speed, her tungsten cutter flashing through the frosty air.
She severed the leg tendons of the second beast, spinning smoothly on her heel to drive her frostbite dagger into its eye socket.

"Take the flank chargers!" the female archer yelled, firing two radiant mana arrows that pinned the third stalker against a transit kiosk.
Nox drew his service pistol and fired two rapid rounds into the pinned creature's skull, shattering its core cavity.

The youth surged across the remaining fifteen yards of frosted ground, executing the final two stalkers with two quick, crescent-shaped void slashes.

The archer lowered her recurve bow, drawing several ragged breaths as she leaned against a cracked lamppost to steady herself.
"You... you killed five Rank E+ shadow stalkers in under fifteen seconds," she gasped, staring at the black-coated youth in disbelief.
"Who are you people?"
"We come from the First Citadel," the youth answered calmly, storing the five shadow shards in his Dimensional Pocket.
"I am Nox."
The archer's eyes widened with profound astonishment as she recognized the title from the global broadcast.
"The Vanguard Sovereign... the First Player who cleared the East Wing sanctuary!" she whispered, lowering her bow in respectful greeting.
"My name is Diana... lead scout of the southern expedition unit."
"What brings your company into the downtown sector?" the dark-haired striker asked, stepping forward with her blades lowered.
"All civic authorities in this metropolitan area have collapsed," Diana explained, wiping a streak of crimson from her cheek.
"Five corporate syndicates seized control of the major districts during the first twenty-four hours."
"Our company holds the northern industrial district, Meridian Corp occupies the financial towers, and the Iron Blood Coalition controls the river harbor."
"Our guildmaster ordered our squad to scout the black obelisk before the Cataclysm Wave begins tonight."
"He is an awakened Rank C titan who commands three hundred armed rankers and modified armored vehicles."
"He believes whoever secures the obelisk will control the entire metropolitan territory."
"And what does your master plan to do about our sanctuary?" Nox asked, his voice calm and cold.
Diana hesitated for a moment, looking at her fallen squad members before meeting the youth's steady gaze.
"You saved my life, so I will give you the unvarnished truth," the archer confessed in an urgent whisper.
"Our commander watched your global announcement yesterday morning."
"He views your independent sovereign declaration as an intolerable challenge to his authority."
"He mobilized a mechanized strike convoy to march on your school and seize the First Citadel by force."
"He plans to send an emissary this afternoon to demand your unconditional submission."
"If you refuse to bend your knee, he intends to bombard your gates with siege weaponry."
The striker let out a sharp, amused laugh, resting her tungsten blade against her shoulder.
"Let him send his messengers," she remarked, glancing toward the southern skyline.
"We turned the last gang of raiders into compost for our greenhouses."
"We will do the exact same thing to any corporate bullies who march onto our grounds," Vasa added, frost swirling around her staff.
"Thank you for the advance warning, Diana," the First Player said, handing her a jar of herbal salve from his pouch.
"Apply this salve to your wounds and find secure shelter outside this combat zone."
"Tell your master that the First Citadel does not bow to corporate syndicates."
"If he wants our territory, he will have to bring his whole company to our gates."
"I will carry your words to him," Diana said, accepting the medicine with a grateful nod.
"Exercise extreme caution, First Player... our guildmaster possesses terrifying physical power and cursed armor."
"He does not negotiate with anyone he considers inferior."
"We have dealt with arrogant tyrants before," the striker replied, rolling her shoulders with cool confidence.
"They all bleed the exact same way when their guard drops."
"Let him test our defenses," Vasa murmured, adjusting the strap of her supply satchel.
"Our frost barriers will give his armored trucks a very cold reception."
"We have gathered the intelligence we needed," the youth stated, turning his gaze toward the south.
"Let's get back to our gates and set up a proper welcome for these emissaries."
"I want to see the look on their faces when their demands get thrown back at them," Yeda said, matching his pace as they moved into the avenue.
"The First Citadel is about to teach these corporate raiders a permanent lesson!" the frost mage declared, following close behind through the mist.
The three scouts hurried south along the shattered roadway, leaving the sleeping overpass wyrm and the ruined plaza behind them.
High above the skyline, the crimson countdown on the black obelisk pulsed steadily against the clouds, ticking toward the coming Cataclysm.
