Chapter 553: Vs. Riley
~Third POV~
[Sinnoh Region, Later, Battle Zone – Fight Area (Pokémon Center)]
The scene shifted to the bustling Pokémon Center within the Battle Zone's central hub. Inside, a low murmur of voices and the comforting chime of healing machines filled the air. Azure sat patiently in the waiting area, Pikachu perched on his shoulder, its tail twitching contentedly. Eevee, a soft, warm weight, dozed on his head, occasionally twitching an ear. Tucked snugly in the inner pocket of his jacket, Pichu (Mew) let out a tiny, contented squeak, utterly oblivious to its true, powerful form.
Rotom, a vibrant spark of consciousness, buzzed softly within his sleek Arc Phone, occasionally projecting holographic data screens that only Azure could fully decipher. Gengar, a mischievous shimmer in his shadow, remained mostly unseen, a playful hum resonating subtly.
His trio – Lucario, the embodiment of fighting spirit; Alpha Garchomp, a titan of raw power; and the ethereal Hisuian Zoroark – were recovering. Their recent bout with Dahlia, the Battle Arcade Star, had been nothing short of electrifying.
Her sweeping team of Zapdos, Togekiss, and Blaziken had pushed his partners to their absolute limits, each of his Pokémon engaging in a dance of calculated risk and sheer will. Azure still felt the phantom echoes of the intense energy emanating from Zapdos's thunderbolts and Blaziken's blazing kicks. It had been brutal, exhilarating, and a testament to his team's growing strength.
*Ding-ding*
The melodic chime of the Pokémon Center's recovery mechanism signaled their readiness. Azure rose, a newfound spring in his step. He announced, his voice a low rumble, "Alright, guys, time to get Lucario, Garchomp, and Zoroark back."
Pikachu chirped excitedly, Eevee stretched, and Pichu peeked out from his jacket, its tiny eyes wide. As Azure approached the counter, Nurse Joy smiled warmly, handing over three Poké Balls and a detailed report on their full recovery.
She confirmed, "They're all in peak condition, Azure."
Azure replied, clipping the Poké Balls to his belt, "Thanks, Nurse Joy!"
He was just about to turn and head towards the exit, his mind already formulating strategies for the Battle Factory, when a calm, resonant voice cut through the ambient chatter, "Excuse me, Azure Sky?"
Azure paused, turning. Standing a few feet away was a man with an air of quiet dignity, his gaze piercing. He had a distinctive hairstyle, a smart blue suit, and a powerful Lucario standing beside him.
Azure recognized him instantly from the games, but this was the first time he'd truly encountered the famed Aura Guardian, Riley, in person. Azure questioned, a hint of surprise in his voice, "Your… Riley? Right? The guy in the Survival Area Attack Expert. Is there something I can help you with?"
Riley offered a polite nod as he replied calmly, "Indeed. I've heard… rumors, Azure. Whispers of a Riolu, belonging to you, that could wield Aura Sphere with remarkable proficiency. And now, I see it's evolved into a Lucario."
His gaze, however, momentarily flickered from Lucario to Azure himself, narrowing slightly. He seemed to briefly take a step back, a subtle shift in his composed demeanor, seeing his aura asking, "And your own aura… It's quite formidable. Have you had formal training in its manipulation, Azure?"
Azure's mind raced as he thought, 'Formal training? Well, technically yes, when I wished for it using Jirachi, but I'm certainly not going to reveal that!'
He settled on a simple, truthful-enough answer, "Yes, something like that."
Riley's eyes, now solely focused on Azure's Lucario, gleamed with an almost scientific curiosity. He requested, his voice gentle, "May I… observe your Lucario's Aura more closely?"
Azure agreed, unclipped Lucario's Poké Ball, "Of course."
*POP*
With a flash of white light, Lucario materialized, its posture confident, eyes sharp. It immediately sensed Riley's Lucario and offered a respectful, yet challenging, nod. Riley stepped closer, his own Lucario mirroring his movements.
He extended a hand, not to touch, but to sense the vibrations in the air. His brow furrowed in concentration. Azure watched, intrigued, as Riley's expression shifted from curiosity to profound astonishment.
Riley exclaimed, a rare burst of emotion, "Remarkable! The sheer potency… the control… It's beyond anything I've encountered in a Lucario of its age. To radiate such a controlled, powerful aura… I see the rumors were not exaggerated."
He then straightened, his gaze returning to Azure, a challenge now openly in his eyes as he requested, "Azure Sky, I believe a friendly battle is in order. My Lucario against yours. What do you say?"
Azure's grin widened as he accepted, "I accept. We have the time, and a good spar is always welcome."
Lucario let out a pleased growl, its aura flaring faintly in anticipation, "Crao! (Finally, a good battle!)"

[Sinnoh Region, Battle Zone – Survival Area]
The scene shifted, following Riley as he led Azure and his Pokémon out of the central hub and deeper into the Battle Zone's rugged terrain. They soon arrived at the Survival Area, a town that thrummed with raw, untamed energy.
Here, the very air seemed to crackle with the ambition of hot-blooded Trainers who gathered to push their limits, their Pokémon sparring in makeshift rings scattered across the dusty ground. The sound of clashing attacks, growls, and the shouts of Trainers formed a constant, exhilarating symphony.
Riley explained, his voice calm amidst the cacophony, "This is one of my preferred training grounds."
He led Azure to a more secluded battle arena where there were four other Trainers who were deeply immersed in their own personalized training regimens. Azure recognized them instantly upon seeing them:
Cheryl, with her distinctive vibrant green hair, was coaching her Blissey through a rigorous HP endurance exercise. Buck, a stocky, determined young man, was directing his Claydol in a defensive maneuver, shoring up its Sp. Defense. Mira, with her elegant demeanor, guided her Alakazam through a barrage of Special Attack drills. And Marley, swift and graceful, meticulously timed her Arcanine's speed feats.
They were the famed Stat Trainers, each a master of honing a specific aspect of a Pokémon's power.
As Riley approached, they paused their training, their heads turning. Cheryl called out with a cheerful wave, "Riley!"
Their greetings, however, quickly dissolved into widening eyes of surprise and recognition as their gazes fell upon Azure. Whispers rippled through the group. Buck murmured, his usual gruffness replaced by awe, "Is that… Azure Sky?"
Mira confirmed, her hands flying to her mouth, "It is! I heard he conquered the Battle Frontier back in Hoenn!"
Marley added, her eyes sparkling, "And won three Leagues!"
Azure felt a familiar blush creep up his neck. His reputation, it seemed, preceded him even here to far-out-of-reach regions.
He mumbled, feeling a touch embarrassed by the sudden attention, "Ah, hello everyone…"
A cackle of mischievous laughter erupted from his shadow. Gengar materialized fully, floating playfully beside him, her toothy grin wide, "Hee hee hee! Look at them, Boss! They're so surprised. Don't be shy, accept their adoration!"
The Stat Trainers collectively gasped, taking a step back. Cheryl exclaimed, her jaw dropping, "A… a talking Gengar?!"
Gengar puffed out her chest, reveling in the shock. She declared, her spectral form shimmering with delight, "Of course! What, you think only humans get to have all the fun of speaking? Silly mortals!"
Rotom, ever the pragmatist, projected a small holographic screen from the Arc Phone. It chimed from the Arc Phone, its voice a synthesized hum, surprising the trainers even more with a talking device, "Gengar's vocalization modules are fully activated and calibrated for maximum audience astonishment. Current engagement levels: 98%."
Riley chuckled, a rare, warm sound from his lips. He motioned to the center of the arena as he asked Azure, "Indeed, Azure has quite the unique team. But for now, we have a battle to attend to. Shall we?"
Azure nodded, his embarrassment fading as the familiar thrill of battle took over. He and Riley took their positions on opposite ends of the field, their respective Lucarios standing proudly before them, both radiating a fierce, contained energy.
Riley reached for his Key Stones, and Azure his Omni Ring at the Mega Evolution Emblem, a silent promise of the power to come. Riley announced, his voice steady, "This will be a 1v1 battle, Lucario against Lucario. May the best Aura Guardian win."
Azure affirmed, "You got it, Riley! Lucario, let's show him what we've got!"
His partner roared, its eyes burning with resolve, "Lucario!"
The battle began with a breathtaking display of agility and power. Both Lucarios, almost perfectly matched in their base forms, lunged forward with incredible speed. Riley's Lucario initiated with a swift Bone Rush, its glowing bone staff a blur of motion. Azure's Lucario met the attack head-on with its own Bone Rush!
*CLANG*
The sounds of staff against staff echoed sharply through the Survival Area.
They became a whirlwind of motion, a blur of blue and black. Each Mach Punch was met by another Mach Punch, each Quick Attack parried by a perfectly timed copy. Aura Slices, faint arcs of energy, crisscrossed the arena, leaving trails of shimmering light.
It was a clash of mirrors, an identical dance of martial arts and Aura manipulation. The stat trainers, along with Pikachu, Eevee, Pichu (Mew), Gengar, and Rotom, watched, mesmerized by the sheer synchronicity and power.
Buck muttered, his eyes wide, "Incredible! They're moving so fast, it's like watching a single Pokémon in two places!"
Mira added, clutching her hands to her chest, "This is what true mastery looks like."
Then, the usage of Aura Spheres began to diverge. Riley's Lucario, with a focused roar, launched a perfectly condensed Sphere, precise and deadly, aiming for Azure's Lucario's chest. Azure's Lucario, however, met it not with a single sphere but by deflecting the incoming attack with a rapidly generated shield of Aura, dispersing Riley's attack harmlessly.
Riley murmured, intrigued, "An Aura Shield?! Impressive control."
Azure's Lucario retaliated with a volley of smaller, faster Aura Pellets, less powerful individually but designed to overwhelm and disrupt. Riley's Lucario skillfully weaved through them, deflecting the few that got too close with quick strikes of its paws, its movements economical and fluid.
The intensified battle pushed both Lucarios to their limits. Finally, both Trainers simultaneously reached for their wrists.
Riley declared, tapping his Key Stone, "Lucario, beyond evolution!"
Azure commanded, his voice ringing with conviction, his hand pressing against his own Omni Ring, "Show them your true strength, Lucario!"
*FLASH*
A blinding surge of light erupted from both Pokémon. Riley's Lucario shimmered, its fur hardening, its muscles bulging, its overall form becoming more imposing and aggressive, its crimson markings glowing.
It emerged as Mega Lucario, radiating immense destructive power.
But then, Riley's eyes and those of the watching Stat Trainers widened in genuine shock at Azure's Lucario. The light surrounding it didn't just transform; it surged, crackling with an almost wild energy.
A faint Z-aura shimmered around Azure's Lucario as it expanded, its fur hardening to an even greater degree. Parts of its fur, particularly on the back of its hands and shins, solidified into a metallic sheen, glinting with steel energy. Its head appendages grew longer, more whip-like, and a distinctive fan-shaped tail unfurled behind it.
This was no ordinary Mega Evolution.
Cheryl gasped, barely believing her eyes, "What… what is that?!"
Azure announced, his voice filled with pride, "It's… It's Mega Lucario Z! A form that greatly surpasses a regular Mega Lucario!"
Rotom, ever the technical advisor, chimed in from the Arc Phone, projecting a small, fast-loading diagram, and uttered, "Designation: Mega Lucario Z. Observed power output: 175% of standard Mega Lucario. Key features: Enhanced steel-energy hardened fur for defensive and offensive capabilities, adaptable Aura manipulation, and unique physical attributes for close-quarters combat."
Riley watched, utterly stunned, but quickly regaining his composure, his gaze sharpening. He grinned, feeling his fighting spirit ignited, and commented, "Mega Lucario Z… fascinating! Let's see its true power, Azure!"
The battle resumed, now with exponentially greater intensity. Mega Lucario Z, for all its formidable appearance, moved with an almost ethereal grace, a stark contrast to Riley's Mega Lucario's more direct, aggressive approach.
*THWACK-WHUMP*
Riley's Mega Lucario, channeling its aura into a destructive force, launched a ferocious Close Combat. It moved like a blue-and-black projectile, aiming to overwhelm Azure's Lucario with a flurry of powerful, devastating blows.
Azure's Mega Lucario Z met the onslaught. Instead of directly clashing head-on, power for power, it utilized its enhanced Aura Manipulation. The longer fur appendages on its head and waist, usually decorative, now became tools of war, whipping and weaving to visually disorient Riley's Lucario.
*Whooosh*
Its fan-shaped tail flicked, creating faint blurs in the air, throwing off its opponent's depth perception. Mega Lucario Z cloaked itself in a shimmering, thin shield of aura, not for brute force defense, but to increase its flexibility and agility.
*Whoosh-Swish-Clang*
It parried and deflected every incoming attack, moving with the fluid beauty of a trained dancer, each movement a counter to Riley's Mega Lucario's raw power. The sounds of their clash intensified, but Mega Lucario Z managed to evade most of the crushing blows, only grazing hits landing on its aura shield.
Riley muttered, watching his Mega Lucario's frustrated attempts to land a solid hit, "Incredible! It's fighting as if it were dancing!"
As Riley's Mega Lucario committed to another powerful attack, Azure saw his opening. He ordered, "Now, Lucario! Power-Up Punch!"
With a burst of speed that defied its hardened form, Mega Lucario Z weaved under an incoming Bone Rush. Concentrating its steel energy into the back of its hand, it delivered a devastating Power-Up Punch directly to Riley's Mega Lucario's abdomen.
*CRACK*
The force of the blow sent Riley's Lucario skidding back several feet, a grunt of pain escaping its throat. Azure's Lucario wasn't done. Its head appendages, moved by its precisely controlled aura, snapped forward like bludgeons, whipping and lashing out at the dazed Mega Lucario.
*WHIP-SMACK*
The attacks, while not as powerful as the Power-Up Punch, were relentless, keeping Riley's Lucario off-balance. Riley, recognizing the turning tide, knew he needed to end this quickly. He ordered, "Lucario, full power! Aura Sphere!
His Mega Lucario, roaring defiance, gathered a massive, pulsating orb of pure aura in its hands. It was larger, more unstable, and far more destructive than any previous Aura Sphere, promising to obliterate anything in its path.
*RUMBLE*
The ground trembled faintly. And yet Azure, however, remained calm.
His Mega Lucario Z stood firm, its own aura flaring. He commanded with a grin, "Lucario, let's unleash it! Aura Storm!"
With a powerful leap, Azure's Mega Lucario Z launched itself high into the air, hovering momentarily. Its body glowed, a maelstrom of blue and white energy swirling around it. All the aura it had been manipulating, all the steel energy within its hardened fur, converged. From its chest, a beam of pure, unadulterated aura energy, far wider and more potent than any Aura Sphere, erupted!
*CRACKLE-ROOOOAAR*
The beam was not a simple projectile; it was a controlled torrent, condensing further as it tore through the air. Riley's Mega Lucario launched its massive Aura Sphere, a desperate, final gambit. The two attacks collided mid-air…
*KRA-BOOOOM*
… met with a deafening KABOOOOOM! A blinding flash of light engulfed the arena, forcing everyone to shield their eyes.
When the light dissipated, the scene was clear. Azure's Aura Storm had not merely met Riley's Aura Sphere; it had pierced through it, tearing a hole clean through the center of the explosive orb.
The remaining remnants of the Aura Storm struck Riley's Mega Lucario, sending it crashing to the ground with a pained yelp. The Mega Evolution shimmered and then faded, leaving Riley's Lucario lying defeated, though conscious, on the ground.
A tense silence fell over the Survival Area, broken only by the heavy breathing of Azure's Mega Lucario Z, which slowly descended, its formidable form shimmering as it reverted to its base state, still standing tall and victorious.
Riley slowly walked over to his Lucario, kneeling to check on it. After a moment, he looked up at Azure, a wide, genuine smile gracing his lips.
He extended a hand as he praised Azure for the battle in an awed tone, "Azure… that was… truly magnificent. Your Lucario's mastery of Aura manipulation, especially its Mega Lucario Z form and that 'Aura Storm'… It's unparalleled. A truly humbling experience. Thank you for that battle."
Azure took his hand, shaking it firmly as he replied happily, "Thank you, Riley. Your Lucario is incredibly strong; it pushed us to our limits."
Pikachu, Eevee, Pichu (Mew), Gengar, and Rotom all cheered. Gengar exclaimed, floating around him, "That was spectacular, Boss! Did you see their faces when Lucario went Z! Priceless!"
Rotom chimed in excitedly, "Indeed, Gengar. Battle performance analyzed. Mega Lucario Z exhibited exceptional defensive flexibility and offensive power, confirming advanced aura manipulation capabilities."
Riley's gaze swept over the Stat Trainers, who were still reeling from the incredible display. He asked Azure curiously, "It seems my friends here are quite impressed as well. Azure, would you perhaps be willing to spar with them? I believe your unique approach and your team's power could offer them invaluable insight."
Azure grinned, a spark of excitement in his eyes. He glanced at his Lucario, who nodded, ready for more. He replied with a grin, "I thought you'd never ask, Riley. I've got plenty of time. The Battle Factory can wait until tomorrow."
The Survival Area, already buzzing with energy, now anticipated an even greater spectacle. Azure Sky, the young Aura Guardian with his extraordinary Pokémon, was ready to take on the best the Battle Zone had to offer.
