The blue-and-white Mizutani Shion tore down Night City's streets, its body a blur of color beneath the streetlights. The dim yellow glow mingled with its blue-and-white streak, creating a hazy palette. It darted between cars like lightning—too fast for the naked eye to follow.
Tonight, Night City was destined to be anything but calm. The Shion's engine roared at full throttle, like a beast snarling in fury. Traffic lights and road signs meant nothing to the driver, and order on the road crumbled in his wake.
Thankfully, this wasn't the highway.
Seeing that streak of blue and white blaze past, the more cautious drivers instinctively slowed, unwilling to be caught up with a maniac like that.
Their instincts proved right when two Emperor 720s thundered past after it. These Moore Corp–branded beasts had massive frames and monstrous engines. Anyone unlucky enough to get in their way would be the one to pay—most likely with a totaled car and a trip to the morgue, while the Emperors would bear little more than a scratch.
"Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit!"
David's panicked yells were swallowed by the wind screaming past the sports car.
Head tilted back, jaw clenched, eyes wide, he watched one obstacle after another vanish behind them. His palms dug into his thighs, fingers gripping hard at the muscle. Adrenaline pumped through his veins, sending his body into overdrive.
The Shion's evasive maneuvers were slick, almost graceful—but every turn still screamed Speed and Danger. At these velocities, a single mistake meant instant death.
Right now, he understood exactly what "Death rides with me" meant.
David was almost grateful that the woman Keisuke Kitagawa had carried out of the building was unconscious. At this speed, riding in the trunk would've been a form of torture no one deserved.
The man behind the wheel, however—the architect of all this chaos—looked utterly calm, his expression unreadable.
As the car sliced through alternating beams of shadow and light, his eyes glinted like a hawk locked on prey. This was clearly not his first high-speed chase.
If the circumstances were different, David could almost picture him lighting a cigarette, elbow resting out the open window, letting the smoke trail into the night.
But right now, his instructor was laser-focused on driving, and David didn't dare ask him to slow down. This Japanese man might look relaxed, but David wasn't about to gamble his life on it. One slip, one distraction, and his body would end up as road paste.
The escape plan had been thrown together so quickly that the Shion soon outran the private comms channel's range.
That meant the netrunner girl was already out of contact. At this point, anything David said on comms would be nothing but talking to himself.
He glanced at the side mirror. The two Emperor 720s were still glued to their tail like rabid dogs, as if they hadn't kidnapped a corporate target's companion—but their own mothers.
How long is this damn chase going to last?
David sighed inwardly, thinking back to how they'd escaped the apartment building.
Jumping from the third floor had bought them precious seconds—by the time the building's security reacted, they were long gone. Kitagawa had been the first out the window, dumping the unconscious blonde into the trunk before jumping behind the wheel.
He'd already pulled away when he suddenly glanced back and saw David chasing after the car, yelling for him to wait. Only then did he slam the brakes.
That, at least, was Kitagawa's version of events. David was convinced the bastard had done it on purpose.
Either way, the job should have been clean. But two Emperor 720s had intercepted them almost immediately.
If Kitagawa hadn't reacted fast, those armored monsters would've crushed their lightweight coupe without a second thought.
And so the chase began—Kitagawa driving with ice-cold precision, the Emperors grinding after them, neither side giving an inch.
His skill behind the wheel was exceptional, but traffic forced him to ease up now and then, giving the pursuers chances to close in.
Of course, the Emperors didn't care about other cars. Let the peasants dodge—their armor could plow through anything.
Still, this couldn't last forever. The only reason the chase hadn't ended in a hail of bullets was because traffic was so heavy. If they hit a clear stretch of road, David knew the corporate security boys would unload on them without hesitation.
His gaze dropped to the weapons resting on his lap and legs—a Kang Tao pistol, a Militech SMG, and an Ajax assault rifle strapped to his calves.
If it came to it, he'd have to fight.
But just as he steeled himself, Kitagawa spoke—calmly, almost with anticipation:
"It's time."
"Huh?"
David blinked at him, not understanding. But then he saw it—Kitagawa's hard mask softening, his eyes glinting with something almost like excitement.
Following his gaze, David looked ahead.
Traffic still filled the street, bathed in the dim yellow glow of streetlights. But through that haze came a piercing beam of white light, cutting the gloom like a blade.
Someone was… driving straight at them. Against traffic.
As the light grew closer, David's eyes widened. When the source came into view, his breath caught.
It was a car he knew—a Sky Blue Caliburn, its doors open, no one in the driver's seat.
The Caliburn's windows weren't glass but synthetic crystal, making it impossible to see inside—though in this case, there was no one to see.
Because the driver was outside.
The wind tore through the young man's hair as he crouched low, balanced on the hood like a predator poised to strike. The Caliburn had become his mount.
One hand gripped the gap at the car door, the other held a katana—its blade shimmering with cyan light, brighter than any streetlamp.
No words were needed. No plan had to be explained.
The Caliburn and the Shion passed each other in a heartbeat, like old friends exchanging a fleeting high-five before parting ways.
One roared forward. The other kept on against the tide.
