Listening to Professor Oak's explanation of the evolution conditions, Silas felt his thoughts stir.
Setting aside whether Ursaring truly evolved in that exact manner, there was another Pokémon that absolutely had a similar evolutionary path.
Eevee.
Silas had previously discovered Eevee's evolutions into Leafeon and Glaceon.
In his view, Espeon, which evolves during the day, and Umbreon, which evolves at night, were among the most elegant of the entire Eevee line. Combined with their respective typings, their battle capabilities were not to be underestimated.
If three newly discovered forms weren't enough to qualify directly as a Pokémon Professor, then he'd raise that number to five.
"Eevee's evolutions?" Professor Oak responded patiently after hearing Silas's idea. "We have considered time-based conditions before. However, so far we haven't found any matching special item that would cause it to evolve during the day or night."
Silas remained undeterred.
"What about friendship evolution? Awakening Eevee's unstable genes through the bond between Trainer and Pokémon, then triggering the change using the power of the sun or moon, rather than relying on an item?"
Item-based evolution was already common, so researchers naturally thought along those lines. If they couldn't even make that connection, they might as well quit the profession.
However, the concept of friendship evolution was still relatively new.
Even Professor Oak and Professor Rowan would not have immediately connected the dots.
That was where Silas had the advantage.
"Friendship and bonds…" Professor Oak muttered. His eyes gradually lit up. "You're right. And there are precedents, we simply overlooked them."
Silas naturally knew what he was referring to:
Budew evolving into Roselia
Chingling evolving into Chimecho
Both require high friendship. In addition:
Budew evolves only during the day.
Chingling evolves only at night.
Their evolution timing aligns with their attributes and habits.
As for why these cases were overlooked, Likely because Budew and Chingling are relatively rare. They are among the Pokémon that hatch only when a specific incense is held during breeding.
In most cases, Trainers choose to hatch Roselia or Chimecho directly rather than deliberately raising their baby forms through a stage that seems to have little competitive value.
"If this hypothesis is correct," Professor Oak said excitedly while pacing the field with a massive stone in his arms, "then other Pokémon may have similar evolution methods! This would be a truly revolutionary theory!"
Silas scratched his head awkwardly.
If he remembered correctly, aside from those four evolutionary lines, the only other notable friendship-based evolution with time conditions was Riolu evolving into Lucario (daytime, high friendship).
Of course, Lucario was unforgettable.
"The Aura Pokémon" had left far too deep an impression on fans. After all, humans simply cannot resist dog-like or cat-like Pokémon.
Still, seeing Professor Oak's enthusiasm—and worrying about being accidentally hit by that stone, Silas wisely chose to keep quiet.
"Even if it takes five or six hundred attempts, that shouldn't be too much for the Oak Laboratory, right?" he thought silently.
Nearby, Dragonite watched helplessly, carefully shadowing Professor Oak.
You're not young anymore, could you stop acting like you're still in your prime?
Fortunately, Professor Oak's back was still sturdy.
After tossing the boulder aside with a loud crash, he immediately prepared to return to Kanto.
"It's getting late. Why not stay here for the night, Professor?" Silas suggested with a wry smile.
Originally, Professor Oak had planned to remain in Ecruteak City for some time to conduct research. There was no need to travel back and forth between Johto and Kanto in a single day.
Though the two regions border each other, they are vast. With Dragonite as transportation, travel time wasn't the main concern, energy consumption was.
Professor Oak's health was invaluable.
"You brat, your hypothesis makes me want to start researching immediately!" Professor Oak exclaimed, slapping Silas heavily on the shoulder. "You're truly suited for research. Why not quit being a Trainer and become a Pokémon Professor instead?"
Even with Silas's physical conditioning, that slap hurt. As expected of someone who had trained through the rough early era of Pokémon battling.
Silas only smiled.
He knew himself well. His memory was exceptional, yes, but that didn't mean he had the analytical brilliance required of a true academic genius.
If that were the case, he would have mastered foundational knowledge much faster when he first arrived in this world.
Seeing Silas's reaction, Professor Oak sighed but said nothing further.
He always respected young Trainers' choices.
Still, it was a pity.
"Fine, fine. I'll stay the night and leave in the morning."
That much, at least, he accepted.
Staying at the Pokémon Center was out of the question, it didn't quite suit his status.
Instead, Professor Oak directly contacted the Mayor of Ecruteak City and secured accommodation at the city's finest hotel.
The entire process was seamless.
Most notably, they didn't pay a single Poké Dollar.
"Professor, and young Trainer, I hope you enjoy your stay in Ecruteak City."
The mayor smiled and departed.
"Oh, he was one of my students at Celadon University," Professor Oak explained cheerfully.
Silas finally understood.
This gentle old man was not only a renowned Pokémon Professor, He was also a teacher with students across the region.
Given Celadon University's reputation, it was only natural that graduates would hold high-ranking positions.
Many older League officials were beginning to retire. People in their thirties now formed the backbone of regional administration.
Given Professor Oak's age and teaching history, Silas suddenly realized something.
"Wait… does that mean most of the League's upper leadership might call Professor Oak 'Teacher' someday?"
In the Pokémon world, attaching yourself to Professor Oak might be even more valuable than any cheat ability.
Eventually, their conversation turned to Pokémon strength progression.
"You want Blaziken to comprehend the essence of flame?" Professor Oak considered. "In that case, I suggest you visit the Burned Tower."
"The Burned Tower?" Silas frowned. "Isn't that place abandoned and now inhabited mostly by Ghost-type Pokémon?"
Professor Oak tilted his head.
"If you're afraid, I can arrange someone to accompany you."
"That's not what I meant!" Silas covered his face. Was he really the cowardly type? "I meant, what could Blaziken possibly gain there?"
Professor Oak answered simply:
"The destructive power of fire and rebirth from the ashes."
"Destruction and rebirth?"
The next morning, standing before a pitch-black ruin, Silas still had Professor Oak's words echoing in his mind.
Professor Oak hadn't elaborated further. He had simply told Silas and Blaziken to experience it for themselves.
When it came to raising Fire-type Pokémon, even though Professor Oak specialized in Normal-types, he had considerable authority on the matter.
Not only because he was a Pokémon Professor. But more importantly, because his first partner had been a Charmander. Now, it was a tremendously powerful Charizard.
Silas had once been fortunate enough to witness that Charizard in action on the hill behind the laboratory.
In an instant truly an instant, a massive boulder had been reduced to charred rubble by the flames it unleashed.
Unlike ordinary Fire-type Pokémon, that Charizard's flames were an unusual shade of blue.
Afterward, it merely glanced at him and flew away, clearly unconcerned.
"Phew…"
Shaking his head to clear unnecessary memories, Silas carefully examined the ruins before him.
Scarred. Crumbling. Blackened stone and shattered walls everywhere.
Only such words could describe it.
The Burned Tower, now reduced to only a few remaining levels had long lost its former majesty and beauty. Yet Silas could still sense a profound weight within it.
Perhaps, that weight came from history itself.
"Let's go."
Releasing Blaziken, Silas pushed open the half-closed doors together with it.
Creeeak—
With an eerie groan, one human and one Pokémon officially entered the long-desolate Burned Tower.
"It really is just like the rumors," Silas muttered. "Even in broad daylight, it's pitch-black, with only the occasional ray of light."
Over time, dust and soot had fused with the structure. Everything inside was jet black, absorbing light rather than reflecting it.
It was difficult to imagine just how catastrophic the original fire must have been.
"Let's head up."
The ground floor was nothing but empty ruins, so Silas led Blaziken toward the staircase along the wall.
Creak… creak…
Calling it a staircase was generous. Being made of wood, it had deteriorated just like the rest of the tower.
Each step felt as though it might collapse at any moment.
Silas remained completely calm. If worst came to worst, Blaziken would catch him. He wouldn't suffer serious injury.
As they climbed higher, the atmosphere grew increasingly eerie. The air turned noticeably colder.
It was summer outside. Yet inside the tower, it felt like late autumn.
Blaziken moved closer to Silas.
"Relax," Silas said with a smile. "We're the guests here. They're the hosts."
Unfortunately, the hosts clearly did not welcome them.
Whoosh!!
Without warning, flames suddenly erupted around them.
Front, back, left, right—even above.
Clusters of fire rapidly spread outward.
In moments, Silas and Blaziken seemed engulfed in a sea of flames.
"Hm. Decent visual effect, but lacking in other aspects," Silas commented casually. "You should add smoke. Or maybe mix in Will-O-Wisp."
Even now, he had time to critique.
From the darkness came faint voices—
"Gastly~"
"Haunter~ hehehehe~"
The tower's hidden residents were clearly surprised by his reaction. They began "whispering" among themselves.
Though in truth, they weren't quiet at all.
"Would you be interested in coming out to talk? I promise we won't disturb your lives."
Silas genuinely preferred to resolve matters peacefully.
But the illusory flames persisted, and the residents showed no intention of revealing themselves.
He shrugged.
"Ampharos, Odor Sleuth."
With a swift motion, he released a Luxury Ball.
"Amphaaaaros!"
After a long cry, a ring of white light swept across the entire floor.
"Gastly~" ×n
One by one, spherical Pokémon surrounded by dark gas revealed themselves. They had large white eyes and sharp fangs, Gastly.
Among them were several Haunter.
Compared to Gastly, Haunter had a more solid, purple body, with detached hands floating before it like wandering spirits.
Naturally, there was no Gengar. It was relatively rare.
"Blaziken," Silas snapped his fingers, "show them what real fire looks like. Be careful not to damage the tower."
For most Trainers, Ghost-types were terrifying opponents.
Silas wasn't afraid at all.
The only concern was whether the Gastly and Haunter would release gas that might explode upon contact with open flames.
The Burned Tower might be abandoned, but it was once sacred ground. If he destroyed it, even possessing the Rainbow Wing might not save him from being expelled from Ecruteak City.
"Blaze."
Blaziken understood. It didn't unleash high-powered flames.
Instead, it spat out small fire sparks.
"Hehehe—"
Seeing this, the Gastly and Haunter burst into laughter.
Such tiny flames? What could they possibly hurt? For such a large Pokémon, this was pathetic.
Accustomed to pranks, they felt as though they themselves were being pranked.
How amusing.
Bang!
In the next moment, the tiny flames struck them one after another.
Before the astonished eyes of their companions, the small sparks exploded with astonishing power.
Every Gastly and Haunter hit was blasted away.
"Blaze."
Blaziken strode forward toward a stunned Haunter.
What are you staring at?
Before it could react, A powerful Fire Punch slammed directly into its body.
Blaziken didn't even spare it a glance afterward.
Twisting its waist and bending its leg, it instantly appeared before another.
Punch. Retract.
Blaziken repeated the simple motion over and over.
