Chapter 402 - Chapter 402: Ecruteak City and Preliminary Conclusions

Teddiursa was captured smoothly.

However, the Poké Ball thrown at the massive bear Pokémon shook several times before bursting open.

Silas slapped his forehead.

Because he usually used other specialized Poké Balls, he had forgotten that standard Poké Balls carried a risk of breaking when attempting to capture Pokémon weighing over 200 kilograms.

If he hadn't used an Ultra Ball when he caught Rhydon last year, he would've needed to replace its ball after it evolved from Rhyperior.

Even so, the Ultra Ball containing a nearly 300-kilogram Pokémon had been under serious strain.

Silas made a mental note to ask Brock to help him replace it with a Heavy Ball later.

As for the cost, he'd deal with that when he got back. With that thought, Silas casually tossed a spare Ultra Ball.

The big guy in front of him likely weighed just under 300 kilograms, so an Ultra Ball would suffice for now. If it cracked after being sent to Professor Oak's lab, surely the professor wouldn't be stingy about replacing it with a Heavy Ball.

After all, Silas wasn't wealthy enough yet to carry expensive Luxury Balls as backups.

This time, there were no issues.

The capture succeeded smoothly.

"Let's go inside and take a look," he said to Blaziken, who had walked over.

"Blaze."

Blaziken nodded.

The two of them entered the cave, guided by the remaining sunlight.

A stench of decay hit them immediately.

It was also noticeably more humid inside than outside.

Still, that wasn't a major problem.

"Hmm it's much larger than I expected. And the soil composition feels unusual," Silas murmured, rubbing the cave wall thoughtfully.

No wonder Pidgeot had been able to fly inside and steal something.

Rather than a simple cave, it was more like a miniature underground world, expansive in both area and height. Otherwise, how could such a massive Pokémon move freely within it?

At the center of the cave was even a bubbling marsh.

Clearly, these two Pokémon hadn't been living in the best conditions. That would need correcting later.

Soon, Silas spotted four neatly arranged gray stones, the same type Pidgeot had brought back.

He bent down, weighed them in his hand, and placed them into his spatial backpack.

If his guess was correct, these were the key items related to the big Pokémon's evolution into its current form.

However, there must be additional conditions, perhaps trade evolution or something similar.

Otherwise, such a form wouldn't have remained undiscovered until now.

Silas remained calm.

He couldn't help sighing.

How had he never intended to become a Pokémon researcher, yet somehow was close to becoming a Pokémon Professor?

Counting carefully, he had already discovered three new Pokémon forms.

Add in various other findings, and he was nearing the qualifications required. Not every researcher who discovered a new form became a Pokémon Professor.

But if someone who discovered three and possibly more in the future couldn't qualify, then probably no one could. After so many years of research, Pokémon forms had been studied extensively.

If discovering one form was luck, discovering several was skill.

Silas tilted his head.

Though honestly most of it felt like luck.

But luck was a kind of strength too.

He recorded the cave's surroundings with his wrist device and collected soil and marsh samples in small containers.

After thoroughly sweeping the cave with Blaziken, the harvest turned out quite substantial.

Several bones.

A pile of fine red sand.

A Hard Stone.

A heap of broken antique fragments.

And several relatively intact Pokémon Fossils.

Among them, the Hard Stone, a Rock-type held item and the complete Fossils were the most valuable.

"So behavior-wise, it perfectly inherits Ursaring's ability to dig up buried items," Silas mused.

That detail was highly meaningful.

After storing the valuables in his backpack, he exited the cave with Blaziken.

"Pidgeot, let's go. We need to hurry this time."

Ecruteak City

Ecruteak City, the legendary historical cityis the ancient capital of northern Johto.

It lies within an old, lush forest.

Its most famous landmarks are the two towering structures standing in the east and west.

To the northwest stands the Burned Tower, destroyed in a great fire centuries ago. It is now in ruins and rarely visited.

After the fire, the once thirty-meter-tall tower was reduced to barely over ten meters, standing in lonely desolation.

To the east stands the Bell Tower, carefully preserved by the Ecruteak Gym lineage.

Through constant restoration, it remains vibrant and structurally sound.

Yet out of reverence, most people rarely enter it.

As a result, both towers and their surroundings feel somewhat desolate.

"Pidgeot—!"

As the sun set, a sharp cry echoed from a forest near Ecruteak City. Silas slowly emerged from a woodland path.

If he didn't genuinely enjoy traveling through the wild with his partners, he would've flown everywhere on Pidgeot long ago.

During their rush earlier, he had even had time to let Pidgeot find a few wild Pokémon so Karrablast and Vulpix could practice battling.

If he had walked the entire way himself, he wouldn't have arrived until midnight.

But most Trainers in the Pokémon world preferred traveling on foot.

Only a small minority relied primarily on Pokémon flight or transportation.

"Hey there, young man! First time in Ecruteak City? Interested in a treasure-finding machine? In a city this ancient, you might discover a priceless treasure!

Then you won't have to worry about money anymore!"

As soon as he entered Ecruteak, a man dressed like a Firebreather approached Silas, holding a pair of dowsing-rod-like devices.

This was one of Ecruteak's local specialties.

Because of its long history, residents had developed a unique attraction, underground treasure hunting.

With one of their devices, you could wander around Ecruteak City and potentially uncover "treasures."

Of course, the value of these treasures was debatable, though they were certainly old.

For example:

• A limited-edition bottle cap from 30 years agoz maybe James would find it interesting.

• Or a bag of delicious Pokémon canned food.

None of it compared to the price of the treasure device itself, but it was mostly for fun.

That said, some lucky individuals had indeed discovered high-value items.

After so many years of excavation, some things were bound to be overlooked.

Those fortunate few naturally became targets of envy.

Silas politely declined.

"No thank you. I've got some business to attend to."

Notably, before entering Ecruteak City, he had put on a mask covering half his face.

Elsewhere it might not matter but here, he would definitely be recognized.

The Firebreather laughed good-naturedly.

"You look familiar, young Trainer. Must be quite talented! Here to challenge the Gym? After you win, be sure to experience Ecruteak's special attractions!"

"Of course, of course," Silas replied awkwardly, quickly slipping away.

He stepped into the Pokémon Center.

It was unusually quiet inside.

An elderly man in a white lab coat paced back and forth in the middle of the lobby, occasionally checking his wristwatch.

The surrounding Trainers and even Nurse Joy, looked at him with respect and admiration.

"Professor Oak," Silas greeted instinctively.

The moment the words left his mouth, he realized his mistake.

Every eye in the room turned toward him,the person Professor Oak had been anxiously waiting for. Silas was certain that if not for the mask covering half his face, he would've been recognized instantly.

Even so, he could hear whispers speculating about his identity and disturbingly, many guesses were correct.

He had no idea how they were identifying him just from his clothing and hairstyle.

Professor Oak turned immediately upon hearing his voice.

"Hurry, hurry! Let's head to the battle field in the back. Show it to me."

He grabbed Silas and pulled him toward the rear.

Silas sighed but didn't resist.

The surrounding Trainers stirred in excitement. A few stepped forward as if to follow.

Nurse Joy blocked their path politely.

"Sorry, everyone. The battle field in the back is temporarily closed until 8 a.m. tomorrow."

The crowd could only watch helplessly as Professor Oak and Silas disappeared from sight.

No one dared force their way in, this was a Pokémon Center, after all. Nurse Joy's kindness should never be mistaken for weakness.

Still, doing nothing left them itching with curiosity.

"Nurse Joy, do you know who that was? Why did Professor Oak come all the way from Pallet Town?"

Unfortunately, she didn't know either and simply shook her head.

The lobby erupted into heated speculation.

Silas could easily imagine the scene inside the Pokémon Center as he followed Professor Oak to the rear battle field.

His identity wouldn't stay hidden much longer.

Not everyone was like Team Rocket's trio or Ash's group.

He shot a mildly resentful look at Professor Oak, who was making quite the spectacle.

Professor Oak coughed and pretended not to notice.

He had simply been too excited.

"Alright, let me see the big fellow."

"Sure, but shouldn't we take some precautions first?" Silas suggested while taking out the Ultra Ball.

He had no intention of being flattened by a bear's paw.

Before Professor Oak even responded, his Dragonite appeared beside them.

"Dragonite~"

It gave a gentle cry, signaling that Silas could proceed. It seemed quite accustomed to Professor Oak's occasional reckless behavior.

A flash of red light, the unknown bear Pokémon appeared on the field.

"Wuooh—!"

It tried to roar angrily but was immediately pinned to the ground by Dragonite's paw.

Dragonite's normally gentle appearance made the scene oddly comical.

The unknown Pokémon struggled defiantly.

"Smack!"

A single tail swipe rendered it still.

Professor Oak blinked.

"You didn't capture it through a proper battle? Or is it some ancient Pokémon that doesn't understand the concept of capture?"

"No, it's just that this big guy was extremely durable, so there was a small incident mid-battle. I'll redo the proper capture afterward," Silas explained briefly.

Professor Oak nodded.

"Chansey, please heal it."

"Chansey~"

The Chansey standing nearby swayed gently as soft white light enveloped the Pokémon.

After that came the physical persuasion phase.

No need to elaborate.

Under Dragonite's combination of tail swipes and punches, the unknown Pokémon quickly gave up resisting.

Being healed only to be knocked unconscious again was simply too tormenting.

Once it realized Dragonite's overwhelming strength, it wisely chose obedience.

Only then did Professor Oak calmly approach.

Though he usually interacted with Pokémon through kindness often resulting in minor injuries or shredded lab coats, he wasn't reckless when dealing with unknown species.

If this had been a truly ferocious carnivore, he wouldn't have trusted his own body to withstand two claw strikes.

Using portable instruments and combining them with the data Silas had provided, Professor Oak quickly reached a more refined conclusion.

"Genetically, it is indeed similar to Ursaring. It should be Ursaring's evolved form.

As for typing, it appears to be Ground/Normal. The additional Ground typing likely comes from the evolution method.

In terms of capabilities, this Pokémon is essentially a comprehensive upgrade over Ursaring. Its energy-based attacks are slightly weaker, but in all other aspects—especially Defense and HP, it surpasses Ursaring."

Professor Oak sighed in admiration.

"If the evolution conditions weren't so strict, this Pokémon could practically serve as a regional starter. When raised from a young Teddiursa, even Ursaring isn't particularly violent."

"What are the evolution conditions?" Silas asked curiously.

Professor Oak considered carefully.

"First, the Peat Block you discovered, that's the key item necessary for the added Ground typing after evolution.

Second, it likely involves time, probably nighttime. I detected lunar energy within the yellow ring on its head.

Lastly, location might also be required. Perhaps evolution must occur in an area where moonlight energy is highly concentrated, similar to how Magnezone evolves."

Nighttime evolution requirements weren't unprecedented. Chingling evolves into Chimecho at night with high friendship.

Sneasel evolves into Weavile at night when holding a Razor Claw.

However, this Pokémon's conditions were clearly far more complex. Only then did Professor Oak realize he had been overly excited.

They could have simply transferred the Pokémon to his laboratory, where proper equipment was available.
