The announcement echoed through a cramped street-side diner, freezing everyone mid-motion.
"Boss, why are you playing the news again? And from WNS, of all channels—those Arasaka bootlickers? Can't you just—"
The muscular customer, his face covered in hardened lines and aggression, had clearly been about to slam his hand on the table and curse Arasaka. But halfway through his rant, something clicked in his stim-fried brain.
Wait—what did that report say?
Saburo Arasaka... Saburo Arasaka is dead?
"Saburo Arasaka is dead?!"
As the people in the diner processed the shock, the street outside erupted with noise.
The news had only just aired, but it was already shaking the city.
The so-called Emperor of Arasaka—the man who had lived for a century and a half, whose very name seemed eternal—was gone. And he died here? In Night City? At Konpeki Plaza?
What the hell happened? When did he arrive? How did he die?
The burly man who had yelled at the TV sat down again, ignoring his half-eaten bowl of synth-pasta. He turned to face the screen directly, eyes glued to the broadcast.
After all, if it wasn't your mess to deal with, watching an emperor fall could be strangely satisfying.
"This is huge," someone muttered.
Even the diner owner, who preferred the news over cooking, stopped what he was doing. There were still orders waiting for synth meals, but a story like this took precedence.
WNS switched to a live broadcast from the scene.
Konpeki Plaza was now swarming with activity.
Security lines had been drawn, and beyond them, a crowd of reporters and corporate representatives had gathered. The majority wore Arasaka or Militech insignia.
Naturally, Arasaka personnel were the most impacted. But Militech had shown up immediately after—almost too quickly. It was as if they'd anticipated something.
"Someone's coming out!"
Back in the diner, a sharp-eyed viewer pointed at the screen. WNS, thanks to its Arasaka connections, had been allowed past the police barricade and was filming near the entrance.
"That's Arasaka's spokesperson! I wonder what they'll say. Can't believe that old bastard's really dead."
"Keep your voice down. Just watch. This is serious. Arasaka's gonna be in chaos. Maybe we'll get a chance to loot a few corpo dogs."
"Loot? You nuts? Saburo's death means the whole city's going to shit. And don't forget, lockdown starts tomorrow. You go out there, and you'll walk right into NCPD fire. If you're lucky. MaxTac's out too—I ain't messing with those cyberpsycho squads."
As the chatter continued, the WNS camera zoomed in on the person emerging from the building.
When the crowd saw his face, the street roared again.
"Senno Arasaka!"
"That ungrateful bastard? What's he doing in Night City?"
"Holy shit… Saburo dies in Konpeki Plaza, and Senno walks out of Konpeki Plaza? Don't tell me this was some kind of Arasaka family reunion."
"Where've you been? Senno's been in Night City a while. But I thought he and Saburo hated each other. What the hell were they doing in the same place? And now Saburo's dead? You think he—"
"No way. Those two have been at odds for years. They were both under tight guard. No way Senno could've pulled it off. My bet? Saburo got so pissed off, he dropped dead from rage. He was ancient anyway."
Senno Arasaka stepped up to a temporary podium set up for press.
His expression was one of genuine sorrow. His eyes glistened.
Clearly, he had something important to say.
Outside, the Militech agents watching the broadcast shifted uneasily.
Why was Senno talking to the press now?
Saburo had just died. Shouldn't Senno be locking down the company and preparing for corporate warfare?
Why the urgency to speak on-camera?
Something felt off.
A few of the Militech personnel began to retreat.
Then—
In front of the WNS cameras, Senno Arasaka spoke.
His voice trembled with emotion.
And his words brought the street to a standstill.
"My father... was murdered."
That single line—simple, heavy—hit the global audience like a bomb.
Everyone watching was stunned.
What did he just say?
Someone...
