The morning air in the sunlit kitchen smelled of warm pastries and sweet vanilla frosting. Six-year-old Leo sat grinning behind his birthday breakfast, wiping a smudge of white cream off his nose. His twin brother, Toby, bounced in the chair right beside him, giggling as he tried to blow out Leo's single birthday candle for him. Their parents laughed, wrapping both six-year-old boys in big, warm hugs to celebrate Leo's special day.
That night, after the streamers were tucked away and Toby was fast asleep in his twin bed across the room, Leo pulled his blanket tight, closed his eyes, and drifted off.
When Leo opened his eyes, he wasn't in his bedroom anymore.
He was lying on a cold, giant marble altar inside a high-ceilinged temple filled with floating crystal lights. He was wearing an oversized, scratchy white linen tunic that hung past his knees, simple cloth shorts, and thin brown leather shoes.
"Ow... my elbow," Leo whimpered, sitting up and rubbing his arm. He pinched his own cheek as hard as he could. "Am I... am I dreaming? Is this a dream?"
A translucent blue window suddenly popped up in front of his face, making him gasp:
[PLAYER STATUS]
Name: Leo | Age: 6 | Title: Dimensional Traveler
Level: 0 | XP: 0 / 50
HP: 1 / 1 | MP: 1 / 1 | SP: 0 / 0
STR: 0 | DEX: 0 | VIT: 0 | INT: 0 | WIS: 0 | LUK: 0
Equipped: Novice Linen Set (Defense +0)
"One HP?" Leo whispered, his voice trembling as he looked at the numbers. "Where is Toby?"
An old man in flowing white robes stepped toward the altar. "Welcome, young spirit," the man said softly.
Leo ducked his head, clutching his scratchy shirt. "Are you a wizard? Where's my house? I want to go back to my bed!"
"I am Elder Kael, the Town Guide," the old man replied gently. "You are a Player who has crossed into the Spirit Realm. To grow strong enough to travel between realms, you must learn to survive. Here—take this." He handed Leo a small leather pouch containing fifty gold coins.
A golden quest box popped up over Leo's eyes:
[NEW QUEST: Beginner Essentials]
Objective 1: Visit the Weapon Shop and equip yourself.
Objective 2: Register your party at the Adventurers Guild.
Reward: 10 Gold, Access to the Meadow of Beginnings
Sitting on the altar steps was another six-year-old boy wearing the exact same itchy tunic. He had light blue skin and deep ocean eyes, and he was hugging his knees, looking completely terrified.
Leo walked over to him timidly. "Um... hi? Are you stuck in my dream too?"
The boy looked up, wiping a tear from his cheek. "I want my mom," he sniffled. "My name is Ren."
Because Leo spoke with him, a small system tag hovered briefly over Ren's head, showing that Ren was also a Level 0 Player with 1 HP, 1 MP, and identical zeroed-out starting stats.
"I'm Leo," Leo said, offering a small hand. "Let's stick together, okay? The wizard guy said we need to go to a weapon shop."
Ren grabbed Leo's hand, and the two scared six-year-olds walked out into the cobbled streets of Brightstone Town, sticking close so they wouldn't get lost.
They found the open-air Weapon Shop down the street. Standing by the display racks was a young girl with dark braids, desert wraps, and a novice tunic, carefully examining a pair of blades.
She turned around as their footsteps approached. "Oh, hi! Are you guys looking for weapons too?" she asked nervously, clutching her own heavy starter gold pouch. "My name is Maya."
Speaking with Maya triggered her system readout above her head, revealing she was another Level 0 Player with 1 HP and 1 MP.
"We have to buy something to protect ourselves," Leo said, stepping up to the counter alongside Ren and Maya.
Floating informational text shimmered over each item as Leo looked across the shop displays.
First, his eyes landed on the Amulet of the Automaton, a sleek metallic pendant priced at fifty gold. Floating details explained that it boosted Intelligence and Wisdom, allowing the wearer to expend one point of Mana to summon a floating robot Pod. The Pod could fire blasts of Yang energy from long range, knocking enemies back with heavy Impact damage to keep a fragile player safe.
Next to it sat the Heavy Tower Shield, a massive wall of reinforced iron priced at fifty gold. It provided extra Vitality and Blunt defense, unlocking the special skill Taunt, which forced aggressive monsters to attack the shield instead of fragile teammates.
Further down the wooden display rested the Twin Daggers, a pair of lightweight, razor-sharp blades costing fifty gold. They boosted Dexterity and allowed for rapid Slash and Pierce strikes that inflicted a Bleed status, causing enemies to lose health over time.
Finally, resting on a velvet cushion, was the Fast-Mana Wand, an elegant wooden rod priced at fifty gold. It boosted Intelligence, designed to rapidly channel Fire or Air elemental magic spells from a distance for one point of Mana.
Leo handed over his fifty gold coins and purchased the Amulet of the Automaton. The moment he fastened the necklace over his scratchy tunic, a tiny, sleek B2-style combat robot materialized over his right shoulder with a soft whir-click.
"Whoa!" Leo giggled, his fear temporarily forgotten as he jumped up and down. "Look! It's my own flying robot buddy! He floats!"
"That's so cool!" Maya gasped. She handed over her coins and bought the Twin Daggers, while Ren bought the Heavy Tower Shield because it was big enough for him to hide behind.
The three kids walked together to the grand Adventurers Guildhall. Standing at the wooden counter was a quiet girl holding a wooden stick with a glowing crystal top.
"Is that a magic wand?" Leo asked, walking up beside her.
"Mmhmm," the girl nodded shyly. "I'm Kira. It shoots fire." Talking with Kira revealed her status readout—she was another Level 0 Player with 1 HP and 1 MP.
Guildmaster Kael walked out from behind the counter, smiling at the four children. "To survive outside, you must link your spirits together into a party," Kael instructed. "Open your player menus, select the 'Party Management' tab, and tap 'Send Invite' to those standing beside you."
Leo tapped the air in front of him, finding the blue icon Kael mentioned. "Look! If I push this blue button, I can send you guys a friend request! Tap the screen!"
Ren, Maya, and Kira all tapped the glowing prompts floating in front of them, instantly creating a 4-Person Party with linked health bars.
"Good," Guildmaster Kael nodded. "Now, before you leave, look at the Guild Bounty Board. Monsters use attacks like Blunt, Slash, and Impact, and react to elements like Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and Yin-Yang. Taking a bounty will earn you extra rewards when you slay them."
Kael pointed to a glowing parchment on the wall, and Leo accepted it:
[BOUNTY ACCEPTED: Slime Cleanup]
Objective: Defeat 1 Spirit Slime in the Meadow of Beginnings.
Reward: +10 Gold, +15 XP
[QUEST COMPLETED: Beginner Essentials]
Reward: +10 Gold, Access to Meadow of Beginnings
Equipped and carrying their active bounty, the four children held hands and walked past the town gates. The second Leo's boots touched the pastel green grass of the Meadow of Beginnings, a chime rang out:
[SYSTEM UNLOCKED: World Map & Mini-Map]
A semi-transparent 3D map expanded over Leo's vision. "Guys! Look!" Leo pointed into the air. "There's a map! Blue dots are us, white dots are safe people, and red dots are monsters!"
Following the paved path, they passed a short shopkeeper sitting on a chest, marked as a White Dot on Leo's map:
[NPC STATUS]
Name: Pippin | Title: Beginner Zone Merchant | Level: 5 | HP: 100 / 100
Suddenly, a rustle came from the tall grass off the path. On Leo's map, a bright Red Dot crossed the safe perimeter. A translucent, squishy Spirit Slime bounced into the open, its red core glowing.
Leo inspected the monster: it was a Level 0 Spirit Slime with 20 HP, weak to Fire and Slash attacks.
"Eek! It's looking at me!" Leo squeaked, stepping back. "Ren! Do the shield thing!"
Ren ran to the front and slammed his massive tower shield into the dirt with both hands. "Taunt!" he shouted in his highest kid voice. A red ring of light flared, locking the slime's glowing eyes onto his heavy shield.
"Robot, shoot it!" Leo called out. Expending his single point of MP, Leo's floating pod fired a bright blast of Yang energy, hitting the slime dead-on and knocking it backward with a heavy Impact shockwave.
Maya darted in, giggling nervously as she swung her daggers. "Take that!" Her Slash left glowing red Bleed marks on its gel body. Kira raised her wand from behind, yelling, "Fire!" A burst of flame detonated against the slime's core, popping it into a shower of blue glitter.
A collective chime rang out as their screens flashed:
[BOUNTY COMPLETED: Slime Cleanup]
Reward: +10 Gold, +15 XP
[ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: First Blood]
Condition: Defeat your first monster without taking damage.
Reward: +1 Stat Point, +25 XP
"We finished the bounty!" Leo cheered, jumping up and down with his party. "We're super strong! My robot blasted it!"
Rustle!
Before anyone could turn around, a second, hidden Spirit Slime lunged out from the deep grass behind them, flying straight at Leo's back.
SLAM!
The monster hit Leo right between the shoulder blades.
Damage Taken: 1 Blunt Damage.
Leo's HP bar dropped instantly from 1 / 1 to 0 / 0.
A blinding flash of white light exploded across his vision. His spirit dissolved into glowing blue particles, pulled backward through the air at blinding speed as the meadow vanished.
Leo gasped, bolting upright on the cold marble altar inside the quiet cathedral sanctuary—right back where he had first woken up.
He rubbed his back where the slime had hit him, tears welling up in his eyes. "Ouchie..." he sobbed softly, clutching his scratchy white tunic. "It pushed me... where are my friends?"
Elder Kael was standing right beside the altar, looking down at him with a patient smile.
"Your physical body slumbers peacefully in your bed next to your brother," Elder Kael explained softly. "You are in the Spirit Realm. Every Player who enters this world starts at the exact same baseline."
