Chapter 73 - prologue

My gaze rested upon the sun-drenched streets of Heavenport, sifting through the endless streams of data that flowed through the fabric of reality. Every breath taken, every quiet choice made in the crowded market was a line in the vast text of existence—a thread I was bound to observe, document, and maintain. Wrapped in complete imperceptibility, I existed outside mortal senses. No living being should ever have been able to see, hear, or feel my presence as I tracked the intricate movements of fate below.

Then, the impossible occurred.

A girl with bright pink hair stopped dead in the middle of the crowded square. She turned her head and looked directly at me—no flinch, no hesitation. Her eyes locked onto mine, completely piercing my imperceptible shield.

Startled by her awareness, I shifted my position across the plaza, stepping near the stone arches of a grand fountain. Immediately, her gaze tracked my movement. She wove through the crowd, closing the distance step by step, her eyes never leaving mine.

As she drew closer, I caught the faint, hummed resonance radiating from her pocket—a strange, ancient artifact humming with an otherworldly aura capable of bypassing cosmic concealment.

"Who gave that artifact to you?" I asked, my voice echoing directly into her mind.

Pnea offered only a small, lingering smile. "That... is a secret."

Before I could press her further, she stepped forward and bowed deeply before me.

"Please," she whispered, her voice trembling with desperate reverence. "I beg for divine intervention... restore my beloved Amadeus."

I did not answer her in the realm of mortals. With a single gesture, I tore away the fabric of the city around us, pulling her directly into the void.

Heavenport vanished. Pnea found herself standing in the Vault—an infinite, featureless expanse where space and time held no meaning.

She walked, and she walked. Her footsteps carried no sound in the heavy silence. Hours dissolved into unmeasurable darkness as she searched the featureless horizon. Finally, she stopped suddenly, declaring her purpose into the deep quiet before a shape even formed:

"I came here because I need the balance rewritten," her voice echoed weakly into the void. "I came to ask for what no one else in this world can grant."

Before her words faded, I coalesced the empty space before her. I took on a physical structure, taking the exact form of Amadeus—tall frame, familiar features, and striking, fiery red eyes.

Pnea's breath caught. Tears spilled over her cheeks as she stared at my face. Believing her prayer had been answered, she rushed forward, her trembling hands touching my face. She pulled herself up, pressing her lips against mine in a desperate, weeping kiss, clinging to my frame in absolute relief.

Then, I broke character.

I pulled back violently, my expression shattering into deep, terrible rage.

"Is this what you wanted, Pnea?" my voice echoed through the vessel of Amadeus, harsh and heavy with wrath.

She recoiled, her hands suspended in the dark.

"You stand here touching me, believing you can fix what you destroyed!" I snarled through his lips. "I did not die because of fate or chance. You are the reason I am dead. In the dark, before the end, I pleaded with you to recruit more. I begged you to build an army, to gather manpower so we could survive! But you refused. You kept us small and weak. And because you refused to listen, I bled to death!"

Before she could finish her stammers, the face of Amadeus cracked like fragile glass. I shifted my visage into a scarred warrior from her past.

"Why were we not worthy, Pnea?" the warrior growled.

I shifted again—a young woman with phantom blood dripping from her throat. "Why were we not worth saving? Why were we not worthy to become your followers... your Voyeurs?"

I cycled my features faster and faster—old comrades, sacrificed lives, forgotten associates. Their voices layered over one another in a deafening roar.

WHY WERE WE NOT WORTHY? WHY DID YOU ABANDON US?

"STOP!" Pnea collapsed to her knees, clutching her head against the cold floor as she broke completely. "YOU WERE WORTHY! ALL OF YOU WERE WORTHY! IT IS JUST... I COULD NOT DO IT!"

The roar cut off. I stood over her bent form as my features blurred at terrifying speeds, cycling hundreds of dead faces in milliseconds before settling into a flat, cold monotone:

"We are all dead because of your sick, selfish love for Amadeus."

I returned to my true presence and stepped back into the dark, leaving her broken on the ground.

Look at her kneeling there in the dark. You see those tears pooling on her cheeks? Save your pity. Part of my duty in weaving the unfolding story of existence is watching these threads play out, and I have watched her break a thousand times across a thousand timelines. Every drop she sheds is reserved for a single dead man. Do not let her fragile appearance deceive you—she is not a hero trying to save anyone. She does not care about balance or the collateral lives destroyed in her wake.

Yet, as I watched her from the shadows, expecting her grief to drain her until she crawled away, she did something unexpected.

Pnea's weeping stopped. She lifted her head, her eyes burning with sudden, desperate fury. She forced herself to stand, her voice cutting through the void:

"It was not my fault!" she screamed into the emptiness. "It was yours! You manipulated reality so Amadeus died! You brought this pain to me! If he cannot exist in this world... then I shouldn't either!"

You would probably prefer it if I ended her right now—a clean, logical conclusion to a selfish life. But look at her standing up in that dark void, still screaming into the quiet. She was the first entity I ever wove into existence. She is the catalyst for everything you are reading. How do I abandon the spark that started it all?

I stepped back into her sight. "If your devotion is as absolute as you claim, why did you not seek his soul before coming to me?"

Pnea's shoulders slumped as she recounted her exhausting journey. She spoke of searching every quiet corner and arch of reality, only to discover that Amadeus had been completely wiped clean from the Cycle of Life and Death. His soul was not wandering, nor was there any record left behind to weave him anew.

"A power from beyond," I acknowledged, processing the anomaly. "Only a power from beyond that entered our universe could cause such total erasure from the Cycle of Life and Death. But why would they do such a thing? What could they possibly gain from erasing his existence so thoroughly?"

Pnea stepped closer, her hands trembling with desperate hope. "You are absolute! You control reality! Why can't you just recreate him? Just bring him back!"

"Because my ultimate charge—the supreme responsibility placed upon me—is to keep the universe's timeline in check, balanced, and right," I answered, my voice heavy with divine burden. "I cannot simply manifest a soul out of thin air after it has been wiped from existence. To force something into the universe without a anchor would fracture the timeline, unraveling the very fabric of reality I am bound to protect. Even with my power, I operate under absolute boundaries. Though I can instantly exist anywhere in space, I am forever anchored to a single place in time. I have strict rules I must follow, and an audience I need to please."

I paused, studying her exhausted, desperate form.

"Tell me... after all this time, why do you still think of him? You should have forgotten him long ago."

Pnea raised her eyes to meet mine. There was no hesitation in her gaze, no lingering doubt.

"Love," she answered softly, her voice unyielding. "Love, and love alone."

I closed my eyes for a silent moment before delivering the truth. "Amadeus's essence is not entirely lost. It can be found hidden inside three other living individuals on this world. Because their essence already exists within the current timeline, collecting those pieces will restore him without breaking the structure of reality."

Pnea froze, her expression turning into immediate protest. "No... Amadeus will never agree to that! He would never allow others to die just so he could live!"

"The three individuals holding his essence are doomed to die very soon regardless of your choices," I answered coldly. "Their deaths are already written into the timeline."

I stepped closer, my presence bearing down upon her. "If you wish to proceed, understand the toll. From this moment on, your voice is forfeited—you shall never speak another word again. Furthermore, you, Amadeus, and every single soul touched by this rewrite will remain under my strict surveillance for the rest of time. And lastly, when Amadeus is restored, he will carry the full memories, emotions, and grief of those three individuals within him."

Pnea stood in complete silence. Without a single word left to offer, her jaw set, her eyes burning with absolute, unspoken acceptance.

I reached into her mind, projecting the precise coordinates, the faces of the three doomed hosts, and the exact moments of their impending deaths directly into her thoughts.

With the knowledge granted, I did not offer comfort or farewell. I stepped beyond the boundary of her perception, leaving her standing alone in the vast, silent dark of the Vault—mute, bound, and prepared for her final task.
