Chapter 53 - Danzo's Dogs are everywhere

As the Rain squads crept closer to the Konoha camp, the cold, oppressive air grew heavier. The distant crack of a falling branch sent a ripple of tension through the advancing ninjas, their hands tightening around kunai and blades.

The leader raised his hand, and the squads paused, blending seamlessly into the shadows beneath the dripping foliage. His sharp eyes tracked the movements of the Konoha shinobi, their figures barely visible through the heavy curtain of rain.

He counted them again. Six, maybe seven. They moved quickly, hurriedly stuffing scrolls and equipment into waterproof pouches, their movements a clear sign that they had been warned, but not in time to mount a proper defence.

"Now," the leader whispered. He formed a quick series of hand seals, his chakra flaring briefly as the air around him crackled with energy.

A heartbeat later, the ground beneath the Konoha camp exploded, chunks of mud and shattered rocks spraying in all directions as the lead Rain ninja unleashed a powerful Earth Release technique.

"Incoming!" the Konoha Captain yelled, his eyes widening as he instinctively rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding a jagged spear of rock that burst from the ground where he had just been standing.

The rest of the Konoha ninjas reacted immediately, their training kicking in as they scattered, weapons drawn and eyes scanning for the source of the attack. One of them, a young kunoichi with short, auburn hair, formed a series of hand seals and slammed her palms into the muddy ground.

"Earth Release: Mud Wall!"

A thick, earthen barrier shot up from the ground, absorbing the second wave of earth spikes that erupted from the Rain ninja's position.

Before the barrier could fully form, a second Rain ninja leapt from the treetops, his blade flashing as he brought it down in a powerful, overhead strike. The kunoichi barely managed to block the attack with a hastily drawn kunai, the force of the blow driving her back and shattering her defensive wall.

The camp exploded into chaos as more Rain ninjas poured in from all sides, their weapons gleaming in the dim, rain-soaked light. Steel clashed against steel, and the wet ground quickly became a chaotic tangle of splintered wood, torn canvas, and spraying blood.

The Captain, his arm still bleeding from a glancing blow, ducked beneath a swinging blade and drove his kunai into the gut of a masked Rain ninja, twisting it viciously before ripping it free.

"Hold the line!" he shouted, his voice barely audible over the roar of the storm and the screams of the dying. "We can't let them surround us!"

In the thick underbrush a short distance from the camp, Akane's eyes narrowed as the sounds of battle reached his ears. He glanced at Orochimaru and Tsunade, who both wore matching, predatory smiles.

"They're moving in faster than expected," Tsunade murmured, her fists clenching in anticipation. "Danzo didn't waste any time."

Orochimaru chuckled, his tongue flicking out briefly. "It seems our friend in the camp wasn't as loyal as we hoped. Shall we join the fun?"

Akane didn't bother to respond, his form blurring as he leapt from their hiding place, his cloak snapping in the wind as he closed the distance to the camp in a single, chakra-enhanced burst. Orochimaru and Tsunade followed a heartbeat later, their chakra signatures flaring as they moved.

The Rain ninjas were so focused on their attack that they barely registered the sudden, flickering shadows that appeared among their ranks.

Akane's kunai flashed, cutting through the throat of the nearest Rain ninja before the man could even register his presence. He twisted, his cloak swirling around him as he planted a foot against the wet earth and hurled a shuriken into the face of a second ninja, the blade sinking deep with a wet crunch.

Orochimaru appeared beside him, his fingers weaving a rapid sequence of seals before he exhaled a thick cloud of toxic, purple gas that spread quickly through the rain-soaked clearing.

"Hidden Shadow Snake Hands!"

Fanged serpents erupted from his sleeves, their scales glistening as they struck with blinding speed, sinking their venomous fangs into the exposed flesh of the nearest Rain ninjas.

Tsunade crashed into the fray a moment later, her fist glowing with intense chakra as she slammed it into the ground, sending a shockwave rippling through the camp. The earth buckled and cracked, dozens of Rain ninjas losing their footing as the ground beneath them shattered.

The Rain leader cursed as he watched his carefully coordinated attack unravel in a matter of seconds. He spun, his blade flashing as he blocked a kunai aimed at his throat, his eyes narrowing as he caught sight of the blonde-haired woman barreling through his ranks like a living battering ram.

"Who the hell...?" he snarled, but his words were cut off as a thin, black blade shot from the shadows, slicing across his arm and sending a spray of blood into the air.

He turned, eyes wide, just in time to see Akane's cold gaze locking onto his.

Just as the chaos reached its peak, four ROOT ninjas emerged from the treeline, their white masks and emotionless eyes locking onto the three Konoha shinobi cutting through the Rain forces like a scythe through wheat.

They hesitated for only a moment before moving to intercept, their blades drawn, their chakra flaring in unison as they joined the fray.

Orochimaru's grin widened as he noticed the new arrivals, his serpentine eyes gleaming. "Ah, Danzo's dogs have arrived. This should be interesting."

The rain intensified, the battlefield becoming a churning mire of mud, blood, and shattered stone.

In the chaos, one ROOT ninja, hanging back from the main battle, formed a series of rapid hand seals before melting into the shadows, his form vanishing into the dense underbrush as he moved to deliver a report back to Danzo.

As for the rest, they found themselves caught between the ruthless onslaught of Orochimaru's poison, Tsunade's monstrous strength, and the silent, merciless strikes of Akane.
