I took Mary's letter back to the palace. I sat at my desk for a while, looking at the letter I was drafting to Eric. I feel like I should share more information with Eric, but I can't think of anything I want to tell him about. So, I only have a few lines where I ask for another report, and one other thing.
I had the idea that if he kept a small, living tree in his office I could perceive that tree quite clearly from here by its inherent magic. Eric could leave the things he wants to send me beside it, and I could teleport the things I want to send him to the tree. Then I had the thought that I could send him a gift from time to time.
Using magic, I could put something under his tree. And that something would be a gift. A gift made by elves… The thought made me sigh aloud. Whatever, I'll do it anyway. I bet Eric would love a chess set.
