The announcer's voice rose with clear surprise. "What... Pokemon is that? It's huge. It looks incredibly strong. Ladies and gentlemen, I have never seen anything quite like this in our gym battles before. Look at the size of that creature and those cannon-like arms. Its rocky body seems tough enough to withstand anything thrown at it. The way it stands on this rocky field makes it look like it belongs here completely. This might just be the turning point Gladion needs."
"Gym Leader Gladion has come with another surprise for us folks." The crowd leaned forward in their seats as all eyes focused on the massive Pokemon standing proudly on the rocky field.
"And this one seems a battle hardened one. Just look at those scars." The scars across Rhyperior's rocky armor told stories of many tough fights.
In the VIP section, Agatha watched with wide eyes. She was an experienced Elite Four member and knew many powerful Pokemon.
Even though this evolved form was unfamiliar to her, something about it felt very familiar. The scars and the strong aura around the Pokemon reminded her of old times.
She remembered fighting side by side with this Pokemon during the Infinite Pokemon War. "That's.... Maren's Rhydon....how?" she mumbled to herself quietly. Her voice was full of surprise and confusion. She could not believe what she was seeing. How had this Pokemon evolved and ended up with Gladion?
Sabrina stood on her side of the field and felt equally surprised. She had thought Gladion did not have more new Pokemon unknown to the league left in his team. Yet here was another one.
This massive creature looked completely new to everyone in the Indigo region. She narrowed her eyes and called out with sarcasm in her voice. "Is that a new Pokemon that you coincidentally found?"
Gladion smiled back with the same sarcastic tone. "No it's a new Pokemon evolution that I did coincidentally find." The two gym leaders knew each other well enough to exchange these playful words.
Sabrina had also sent out her next Pokemon. Exeggutor appeared on the rocky field. It was a large Pokemon with three heads and tall palm tree like body. It stood strong on its own.
However, even Exeggutor looked small when standing in front of the giant Rhyperior. The size difference was clear. Exeggutor's heads moved around as it assessed the big opponent carefully.
Gladion looked at his Pokemon with pride. "Alright Rocky. Time to show the world your strength once again after decades." His voice carried respect and emotion.
"Stone Edge," Gladion ordered.
Sharp rocks suddenly erupted all around the arena in a wide circular pattern. The stones rose quickly like walls and blocked every escape route. Exeggutor tried to teleport away but found no safe spot. Several pointed rocks struck it hard under the chin. The hits left Exeggutor dazed and stumbling. Its three heads shook from the impact.
Before Exeggutor could recover, rock type energy gathered in front of Rhyperior's mouth. The energy turned into solid rocks that shot forward like bullets. They struck Exeggutor directly in the chest with heavy force. The big grass Pokemon fell backward and hit the ground hard.
"Synthesis," Sabrina commanded quickly.
Exeggutor used the move while lying on the ground. The damage faded slowly. After a few moments, Exeggutor stood back up on its feet, looking refreshed and ready again.
"Bullet Seed," Sabrina said next.
Exeggutor opened its mouths and fired very fast seeds. These seeds had strong piercing power. They flew like bullets and could bore holes through solid rocks.
Rhyperior reacted with incredible speed. It raised one massive rocky arm in front of its body like a shield. The first wave of Bullet Seeds slammed into the arm with loud cracking sounds.
Sparks flew as the seeds hit the rocky armor but could not break through. Rhyperior stood firm like a mountain. Its feet stayed planted on the rocky ground without sliding even an inch. The crowd watched in amazement as the giant Pokemon blocked the powerful attack so easily.
The seeds kept coming in a rapid stream, but Rhyperior did not lower its arm. Instead, it took a small step forward, pushing against the force of the seeds.
Each hit created small flashes of light on its rocky skin. Exeggutor poured more power into the move, but nothing got past Rhyperior's guard.
"Try to block this. Give it another dose of Bullet Seeds," Sabrina called out.
Gladion sensed something was wrong. He could tell Sabrina had used telepathy to give a hidden extra order at the same time. 'Someone is getting desperate to use underhanded tactics,' Gladion thought.
Rhyperior raised its arm again to block the next wave of Bullet Seeds. Most seeds bounced off harmlessly. However, one seed behaved differently. Instead of ricocheting away, it burst open and released strong vines. The vines wrapped around Rhyperior's body quickly and held him tight. "Leech Seed, huh," Gladion mumbled, recognizing the move right away.
Exeggutor began draining energy and health from Rhyperior through the Leech Seed. At the same time, it used the moment when Rhyperior was trapped to collect energy for a powerful Solar Beam. Green light gathered between its three heads as it prepared the strong grass type attack.
With a loud roar and a burst of pure strength, Rhyperior broke through the vines. Pieces of broken green plants fell to the ground around it. The big Pokemon shook its body once and stood free again.
"Hyper Beam, full power," Gladion commanded.
Rhyperior nodded and let out a deep roar. It opened its mouth wide and collected a massive amount of energy. The energy glowed brightly as it built up.
Exeggutor fired its Solar Beam first. A thick beam of bright white energy shot forward with great force. A second later, Rhyperior released its Hyper Beam.
It collided with the Solar Beam and pushed it back without much trouble. The Hyper Beam overwhelmed the Solar Beam completely. It continued forward and struck Exeggutor directly. A massive explosion covered the grass Pokemon.
When the explosion finally cleared, Exeggutor was still standing but covered in many burns. Its body looked tired and damaged. After a few seconds, it fell to the ground, knocked out and unable to fight anymore.
Rhyperior gave another loud roar that echoed through the entire stadium. The sound was full of pride and emotion. It announced that it was back on the fighting stage after many years.
The last time this Pokemon had fought seriously was during the Infinite Pokemon War. Now it stood here fighting for its former partner's grandson, just like its old trainer Maren would have wanted.
