Chapter 598 - Chapter 598: The First One to Clear the Trial

The scene in the Streaming Mirror was divided into three parts: one showed a champion using a Transfiguration Spell to try and lure the fire dragon away, another showed Krum being intercepted, while Wade, sitting alone in the chamber, occupied half of the screen by himself.

Madam Fujiwara of Mahoutokoro had no interest in discussing the encounter of Karkaroff's student. Her gaze lingered on Wade instead, and with a sharp snap, she closed her paper fan.

"What a beautiful tactic…"

She cast a meaningful glance at Dumbledore and said, "That child's Lumos spell—at first glance, I thought it was the Sunlight Charm!"

"The Sunlight Charm is in fact just a variant of Lumos. Their similarity is only natural."

Antoine stroked his chin, and smiled as he watched Wade in the Streaming Mirror. "But to be able to use such an ordinary illumination spell to this extent—that is truly rare!"

"Indeed. The spells he's using are all common incantations, but his proficiency is extraordinary. I originally thought that boy excelled only in the Shield Charm."

Headmaster Adeso of Uagadou wore a playful smile. "Once this competition ends, I'll have to send him a thank-you letter—at last, that little girl will understand what it means that there is always someone stronger out there!"

Fortunately, Amina was still unconscious. If she had heard her headmaster say such a thing, she would probably have been so angry she'd burst into tears.

Adeso's gaze swept past Wade in the Streaming Mirror, then shifted to another figure.

Among the champions confronting Krum was a student who was particularly tall—almost twice Harry Potter's size.

That was his student, Baboucarr. Broad-shouldered and towering like a polar bear, he looked every bit a powerhouse. Yet his nature was gentle and steady, filled with a protective instinct toward his companions.

Just like the animal he transformed into.

Uagadou was renowned for its expertise in self-Transfiguration. Senior students could transform at will into elephants, leopards, or jerboas, and they could even cast spells using only hand gestures, without a wand—something famous throughout the wizarding world.

But Baboucarr's Animagus form was an elephant, which was of little use in the cramped corridors. Only the few wider chambers would give him any space to fight properly.

Adeso tapped his fingers against his thigh with faint worry flickering in his heart. But when his eyes shifted to his other student, Jabari, his unease was soothed.

No matter what others thought, Dumbledore remained smiling warmly and his eyes twinkled with bright light. He said cheerfully:

"Ah… Wade does indeed enjoy delving deeply into the study of spells. And what's more, he generously shares his experiences with other students… Mmm, would anyone like some chocolate? It's from my personal stash."

However, aside from Antoine and Agilbert, who chuckled and took a piece, the others were far too tense to even think of eating chocolate.

Karkaroff's lips twitched as he muttered silently to himself: "Crazy old fool…"

But he didn't dare say it aloud.

His eyes darted about, then suddenly fixed on a corner of the Streaming Mirror. He shouted loudly:

"Dumbledore, what is your student trying to do now?"

The entire audience turned their eyes to that corner of the Streaming Mirror, where the insect dolls brushed affectionately against Wade Grey's feet one by one, before striding proudly out of the chamber.

A sudden sense of dread welled up in everyone's hearts. Especially when they saw the scorpion doll charging at the front, they almost wanted to scream into the chamber themselves:

"Hurry! Forget the others—burn those things! Burn them!!"

However, whether they shouted or not, the voices from the stands could not reach the ears of the competitors.

At that moment, Karkaroff suddenly burst into delighted laughter:

"Hahahaha! Viktor is out! I knew it, I knew he would be the first! Excellent, Viktor!"

With a loud bang, Krum's figure suddenly appeared on the high platform.

The Durmstrang students instantly erupted into thunderous roars. They pounded their fists against the railings of the stands, shouting at the top of their lungs:

"Viktor Krum! Viktor Krum! Viktor Krum!"

Immediately after, applause surged like a tidal wave from all directions.

Michael curled his lip and muttered to the person next to him:

"What's so great about Krum being first? If Wade wanted to, he could've taken first place ages ago!"

Daphne nodded in agreement, clapping her hands in a restrained, elegant manner.

On the high platform, Krum stumbled a step and instinctively raised his hand to shield his eyes from the sudden brightness of the sunlight.

His black hair was a tangled mess, his clothes were smeared with moss from the chamber passages, and several streaks of blood marred the side of his face.

"Viktor Krum! Viktor Krum! Viktor Krum…"

The deafening cheers rang in his ears. After a moment of dazed hesitation, Krum lifted his arm high, a golden egg gleaming brilliantly in his palm.

Bagman's booming commentary echoed across the arena:

"What a spectacular retreat! Viktor Krum has successfully broken through, and is the first to return with the golden egg…"

With another bang, suddenly another competitor appeared beside Krum. He fell heavily onto the ground, and when he realized where he was, his expression changed drastically.

"Send me back! I touched the Portkey by accident! Quickly, send me back!"

After a brief silence, Bagman's voice came again, this time laced with mockery:

"Oh dear, it seems Mr. Priyanshu Patel did not manage to secure a golden egg? A pity, but I must officially declare—he too is eliminated…"

"Ahhh!"

Harry let out a scream as his calf was slashed open by a deep wound with his bone nearly visible.

But he couldn't afford to stop. With lightning reflexes, he dropped and rolled across the ground, covering his head with his arms as he tumbled into the corner of the wall.

Growing up being chased and beaten by Dudley and his gang—though hardly pleasant—had certainly taught Harry a great deal about surviving in a chaotic fight.

His fingers were scraped raw, but he still clutched his wand tightly. Twisting his upper body sharply, he thrust his wand toward the center of the melee and shouted through gritted teeth:

"Stupefy!"

Rahma, struck simultaneously by two Stunners, collapsed instantly. In this state, even a Reviving Spell wouldn't help—this Al-Qadim contestant was definitely eliminated.

Harry then struggled to push himself upright and glanced around. He saw that the Mantra champion who had come in after him—and who had deliberately stirred up the chaos—had toppled over onto the golden compass.

With a flash, his body vanished, ejected from the chamber.

That guy… If I remember correctly, his name was Priyanshu?

Viktor had disappeared too… which meant only he and Uagadou's Baboucarr were left in the chamber.

The two exchanged glances, and in each other's eyes, they saw the same intention: peace. Both of them let out a long sigh of relief.

"What was that fellow even after?" Baboucarr panted. "He just had to pick a fight with Krum… and in the end, got himself eliminated."

"Who knows?" Harry pressed his hand to his wound as he climbed up from the ground, then asked with concern, "Are you all right?"

Baboucarr glanced at Harry. Seeing that this Hogwarts competitor was genuinely worried about him, his eyes curved slightly, a trace of warmth flashing within them.

He braced himself against the wall and stood as well. "Then… shall we stick with what we agreed on before—each of us takes a different path?"

His deep voice echoed faintly within the chamber.

Before Krum had appeared, the four who had reached the chamber one after another had formed a fragile agreement.

But when Krum emerged from the passage carrying a golden egg, Priyanshu suddenly stirred up trouble—whether to snatch the egg or simply to stop Krum from being first, no one could tell.

Perhaps he assumed the other three would think like him, that they too would immediately seize the chance to fight for victory. Four against one, how could they possibly lose?

But he hadn't considered that the others' thoughts might not match his own.

Especially Harry. He didn't want to lose, but neither did he want to wrest a golden egg from someone who had fought so hard to earn it—that wasn't the kind of victory he sought.

Harry shook his head, unwilling to recall the chaos that had followed. He was only worried: "If we run into others again…"

"Then we lose, that's all," Baboucarr said with a hearty laugh and his white teeth gleamed in the dim light. "But I don't want that we find the golden egg, only for us to fight for it again."

"All right then—good luck."

Hearing this, Harry felt it was indeed for the best. He smiled and nodded.

Baboucarr casually chose the passage nearest to him and, supporting himself against the wall, staggered into it. Harry took a couple of minutes to bind up the wound on his leg before setting off down the opposite path.

Blood dripped, pat, pat, onto the moss along the way. Before long, a scorpion-shaped magic doll pushed aside the dead leaves above its head and scuttled forward in the direction Harry had gone.

Behind it, seven or eight more constructs rustled after, some shedding bits of stone from their bodies as they crawled along.
