Inside the ruins of the stone hut, Hanyuan sat amidst the rubble and settling dust, his chest heaving as he slowly stabilized the churning internal energy. The Heart Calming Incense had burned down to a nub, but its lingering scent helped him anchor his mind. He turned his focus inward, and for the first time, he saw it, the Mortal Core.
It was a perfect, spinning orb, roughly the size of a pigeon's egg, suspended in the very center of his Dantian. The sight was mesmerizing. One half of the sphere shimmered with a pale, crystalline white, looking like a moon carved from ancient glaciers, while the other half crackled with fierce violet sparks. The two elements were perfectly balanced, locked in a harmonious, high speed rotation.
"Early stage Mortal Core..." Hanyuan whispered, a surge of adrenaline washing over him.
The difference was night and day. If his previous power had been a flowing stream, it had now expanded into a vast, bottomless ocean. The Qi stored within that small core was incredibly dense.
I can easily take on ten Peak Qi Refining experts at the same time with this power, Hanyuan thought, his heart thumping with excitement. The Mortal Core realm is truly a different world entirely.
He moved to stand up, but the simple act of shifting his weight caused a sharp crack as the stone floor beneath his feet spider webbed. He wasn't even trying to exert force, it was the natural density of his new state. He felt lighter than air, as if he could leap over the mountains, yet simultaneously heavy as a mountain, his presence commanding the space around him.
I need to spend some time stabilizing my realm, he realized. This power is too raw.
He stepped out through the ruined doorway, pushing aside a blackened beam that had fallen during the explosion. He was a sight to behold, his long black hair hung wild and tangled around his shoulders, and his white robes were little more than shredded rags, stained dark with dried blood and soot from the heat of the breakthrough. However, his eyes glowed with a terrifying, piercing brilliance that made several nearby disciples recoil in fear.
The three Elders stood waiting for him in the center of the clearing.
"This disciple, Bai Hanyuan, greets the Elders," Hanyuan said, performing a deep, respectful bow. Even his voice sounded different, deeper, carrying a resonant vibration that hummed in the air.
"Look at you," the middle aged woman in violet robes said, smiling warmly. Her eyes moved with precision, scanning the quality of his Qi. Elder Su nodded as he said "Bai Hanyuan, by the laws of the Mystic Sky Sect, any disciple who reaches the Mortal Core realm is no longer permitted to stay in the Outer Sect. Your journey on the Cloud-Jade Isle is finished."
He reached into his wide sleeve and pulled out a new identity token. Unlike the simple wooden or bronze slips Hanyuan had seen before, this one was carved from a single piece of deep purple amethyst and etched with silver clouds that seemed to drift across the stone. He tossed it to Hanyuan.
"You are now officially an Inner Disciple," Elder Su announced.
Hanyuan caught the amethyst jade. It felt cool and carried a heavy spiritual weight. This small slip of stone represented a status that millions of people in the Southern Continent could only dream of.
Elder Qi stepped forward, his eyes twinkling with pride. He reached out and patted Hanyuan's shoulder. "Go. Wash the blood and dirt off. You have exactly one hour to settle your affairs and pack what remains of your hut. In one hour, we depart for the Inner Sect peaks."
Hanyuan nodded, his obsidian eyes reflecting the high summits he was about to climb. "Thank you, Elders. I will be ready."
As the Elders vanished in streaks of light, Hanyuan looked down at his new purple jade. reach.
Hanyuan washed away the grime in a nearby spirit spring. When he emerged and donned a fresh set of snow white Inner Disciple robes, he paused before a mirror. His features had sharpened, the boyish roundness of his face replaced by the defined jawline of a young man. His long, black hair was damp and lustrous, and his obsidian eyes held a depth that seemed to pull in the light. Combined with the steady, heavy aura of a Mortal Core expert, he looked undeniably handsome.
He stepped out of his ruined hut, breathing in the mountain air. But before he could take three steps, a second explosion of energy rocked the residential district.
BOOM!
A pillar of pure, swirling blue Qi erupted into the sky, cooling the air so rapidly that frost formed on the nearby trees.
"Another one?"
"This is madness! Two breakthroughs in one hour!"
"Wait, that's the direction of Feng Yue's hut! It must be her,she was already at the half step threshold a month ago!"
The disciples were in an uproar. Breaking through to the Mortal Core was a momentous occasion, but having two happen simultaneously was unheard of.
The three Elders materialized again. Elder Qi let out a hearty chuckle, shaking his head. "Let this old man rest his bones a little bit! My heart can only take so much excitement in one afternoon, haha!"
Elder Su smiled. "This generation is truly blessed. To have two stars rise to the Inner Sect at the same time... the Mystic Sky Sect is growing strong."
Crack.
The door to Feng Yue's hut opened. She stepped out, her blue hair fluttering in the residual wind of her breakthrough. Unlike Hanyuan, who had used the Nine-Revolution Fruit to force a violent transition, Feng Yue had reached the threshold through pure, relentless cultivation. Her state was stable, and her robes were pristine.
When her eyes landed on Hanyuan standing beside the Elders, she froze. A visible blush crept across her cheeks, and she quickly looked away, fiddling with her sleeve.
"Feng Yue," Elder Su announced, his voice carrying the weight of his Dignity. "You have proven your worth. You shall move to the Inner Sect peaks with Hanyuan. One hour to settle your affairs."
He flicked his wrist, and a second amethyst jade token flew through the air. Feng Yue caught it and bowed deeply. "Thank you, Elders."
Hanyuan didn't want to disturb her focus, so he walked to a nearby gnarled plum tree and sat cross legged. He spent the next hour in silent meditation, feeling the white and violet halves of his pigeon egg sized Core spin in his Dantian.
Exactly one hour later, Elder Qi appeared in a shimmer of silver light. Feng Yue stepped out of her hut at the same moment, carrying a small silk bag.
"Are you both ready?" Elder Qi asked, stroking his goatee as he looked at the two.
"Yes," both replied in unison, offering a respectful bow.
Elder Qi tilted his head back and let out a sharp, melodic whistle that echoed across the valley. From the mist above the peaks, a massive shape descended. A huge White Crane, with a wingspan of nearly fifteen meters, landed gracefully in the plaza. Its feathers shimmered like polished jade, and its eyes held a spark of intelligence.
"Step on," Elder Qi commanded.
Hanyuan and Feng Yue climbed onto the broad, soft back of the spirit beast. With a powerful beat of its wings, the crane took flight, soaring vertically through the layer of clouds.
As the world below vanished into white mist, the view above opened up. Hanyuan gasped. Suspended around the central towering peak were five massive flying islands, each larger and more majestic than the Cloud-Jade Isle. Palaces of gold and silver stood atop them, and waterfalls of pure spirit liquid cascaded into the void, turning into mist before they hit the ground.
"You are entering a new world," Elder Qi said, his voice becoming serious as he looked at the two youths. "In the Inner Sect, each of you will eventually receive your own flying beast to traverse the islands, flight on your own power is only possible once you reach the Nascent Soul Stage."
He paused, his silver blue eyes searching theirs. "But hear me now. The Mortal Core realm is not like Qi Refining. It is a path of consolidation, not just accumulation. Do not expect to jump ranks every few months. It is the realm of patience; it would not be strange if you do not see a breakthrough for years. Here, the geniuses are filtered from the true masters."
