The Saturday light came through the window in a slow grey wash, the sky overcast, the lake flat and colourless. Aaron woke before Sophie and lay still, his gaze on the ceiling, the weight of Monday pressing against the edges of his thoughts. He did not reach for his phone. He already knew what it held — the Keller Stone confirmation, the schedule for the week, the unanswered questions he had been carrying since the call with Jessica.
Beside him, Sophie shifted in her sleep. Her hand found his arm, her fingers curling against his skin, and she settled again, her breathing evening out. He turned his head and watched her — the curve of her shoulder, the hair falling across her face, the peace of sleep that he did not want to disturb.
