I lay there in his bed, in his shirt now because he had apparently changed me at some point while I was too tired to properly resist, and stared at the canopy above me like an exhausted queen after a particularly violent coronation.
When Kaden came back, he had a tray in one hand and the expression of a man on a mission.
Soup. Bread. Cut fruit. Water. And, yes, blessedly, honey buns.
He set the tray down, then sat beside me and handed me the spoon.
I ate.
It was humiliating how much better I felt by the third spoonful.
Kaden watched the whole time like he expected me to vanish if he blinked too long. Every now and then his hand brushed my leg, my ankle, my shoulder, like he needed to reassure himself I was still there.
When I got to the honey bun, I tore off a piece and held it out to him.
He looked almost offended. “You’re sharing?”
“I can take it back.”
He leaned in and bit it from my fingers.
The whole thing was annoyingly intimate.
