What was a Wayfarer?
Officially, a student trusted to undertake sanctioned activity beyond the Academy without remaining under direct supervision. In practice, it was the first acknowledgment that the Academy's walls no longer defined the limits of that student's judgment.
Kaleran had put it better, dry as chalk dust and without looking up from a stack of transfer papers, on the afternoon Elias first took the president's seal.
"A Wayfarer," Kaleran had said, "is a student we have stopped pretending to watch. Try not to make me regret which ones."
