Chapter 36 - An Unexpected Evening

Saturday, 7:20 P.M.

The evening breeze carried the faint fragrance of blooming jasmine through the hotel gardens.

Most of the guests had already left.

The laughter that had filled the ballroom earlier had faded into quiet conversations among the remaining staff.

Celina stood near the entrance, waiting for a taxi.

She glanced at her phone.

No available cars.

She sighed softly.

"It may take a while."

Behind her...

Aaron stepped out of the hotel after saying goodbye to several board members.

Ethan followed a few steps behind.

"Sir, the car is ready."

Aaron nodded.

As he walked toward the waiting Rolls-Royce, his eyes instinctively searched the driveway.

They stopped on Celina.

She was standing alone beneath one of the lanterns, hugging the award plaque against her chest as she looked down at her phone.

He changed direction.

Ethan noticed immediately but said nothing.

"Miss Bakers."

Celina looked up.

"Oh... Mr. Steel."

"You're still here."

She smiled apologetically.

"I'm waiting for a taxi."

Aaron glanced toward the nearly empty road.

"It's getting late."

"I'll be fine."

He looked at her for a brief moment before speaking.

"I'll have my driver take you home."

Celina immediately shook her head.

"Oh, no. I couldn't trouble you."

"It isn't trouble."

"I really don't want to inconvenience you."

A faint smile appeared on Aaron's face.

"You've said that three times."

She blinked.

"Have I?"

"You have."

For the first time...

She laughed.

A genuine laugh that made the evening seem warmer.

Aaron found himself smiling as well.

Ethan watched the exchange from a distance.

He's smiling again.

The realization still surprised him.

Aaron looked toward the driver.

"Please take Miss Bakers home first."

The driver nodded respectfully.

"Certainly, sir."

Celina hesitated.

"What about you?"

"I have work waiting."

"You've already done enough for today."

His answer was simple.

It left no room for argument.

After a moment's hesitation...

She nodded.

"Thank you."

Aaron opened the rear door himself.

The gesture caught her off guard.

She quietly stepped inside.

Just before the door closed...

She looked back at him.

"Thank you..."

"Not just for tonight."

"For believing in me."

Aaron met her eyes.

"You've given me every reason to."

For a heartbeat...

Neither looked away.

Then the door closed gently.

The Rolls-Royce pulled away from the hotel.

Aaron remained standing at the curb until the taillights disappeared into the evening traffic.

Ethan walked over.

"I've never seen you wait for someone's car to leave."

Aaron slipped his hands into his pockets.

"Neither have I."

Across Rosewood...

The city lights shimmered outside the car windows.

Celina rested her head lightly against the seat.

Everything that had happened today replayed in her mind.

The award.

The luncheon.

The whispers.

Aaron's speech.

His quiet support.

His steady presence.

She smiled without realizing it.

The driver noticed through the rearview mirror.

"Miss Bakers."

"Yes?"

"Mr. Steel rarely asks anyone if they've arrived safely."

She looked surprised.

"He asked you to tell him?"

The driver nodded politely.

"He said..."

"Please don't leave until she's inside her home."

Celina lowered her eyes.

Her heart skipped unexpectedly.

It wasn't a grand gesture.

It wasn't romantic.

It was simply...

Thoughtful.

Nearly thirty minutes later...

The car stopped outside her apartment building.

Her father was already waiting outside the entrance.

Concern quickly disappeared from his face when he saw her step out safely.

"You're home."

Celina smiled warmly.

"I am."

The driver waited until father and daughter entered the building together.

Only then...

Did he drive away.

Inside the penthouse...

Aaron loosened his tie and stood by the window overlooking the sleeping city.

His phone vibrated.

A message from the driver.

Miss Bakers arrived home safely.

Aaron looked at the screen for a long moment.

Then...

Without realizing it...

He smiled.

Across the room, Ethan noticed.

Quietly.

Without saying a word.

Because some moments...

Deserved their silence.
