Chapter 861 - 860- Summons From Above

The Academy conference room was empty, its chairs arranged in neat rows, its windows overlooking the training grounds where the graduation ceremony would soon take place. Morning light streamed through the glass, casting long, golden rectangles across the polished wooden floor. Dust motes danced in the beams, undisturbed by the silence that had settled over the space.

Renjiro sat alone at the head of the table, the finalised genin team list spread before him. His gaze was sharp as he reviewed each name and each assignment.

He traced a finger down the list, pausing at certain names—familiar names, names that carried weight in the history he remembered.

I hope I made the right choices.

The door opened, and a voice interrupted his thoughts.

"We're ready for you, Renjiro-sama."

Renjiro looked up. Hiroshi Nagatomo stood in the doorway, his posture relaxed, his expression carrying the particular warmth of someone who had spent decades shaping young minds.

He was middle-aged, his hair streaked with grey, his face lined with the kindness that came from years of patient teaching. His eyes, dark and intelligent, held a depth of experience that could not be faked.

Hiroshi had been an Academy instructor for as long as anyone could remember. He had taught generations of shinobi, had watched them grow from frightened children into confident warriors, had mourned those who had fallen and celebrated those who had risen. And years ago, he had taught a young boy named Renjiro.

He remembered the boy clearly. Quiet. Brilliant. Always asking difficult questions that had no easy answers. Already studying advanced chakra theory as an Academy student, his mind racing ahead of his peers, his hunger for knowledge insatiable. Hiroshi had known, even then, that Renjiro was destined for something extraordinary.

And now he's Jonin Commander, Hiroshi thought, a strange sense of pride mingling with the familiarity of the moment. My former student, now commanding nearly every shinobi in Konoha.

"Hiroshi-sensei," Renjiro said, a small smile tugging at his lips. "You don't have to call me Renjiro-sama."

Hiroshi's smile was polite, but firm.

"Perhaps." He stepped into the room, his footsteps soft on the wooden floor. "Once, you were my student. Today, you command nearly every shinobi in Konoha. Titles aren't only for the person receiving them. They're for everyone watching."

He paused, his eyes meeting Renjiro's.

"If the Academy Head casually ignores military hierarchy, everyone else will too. And that would not serve you well."

Renjiro nodded slowly, accepting the logic.

"You've grown," Hiroshi said, his voice carrying a note of nostalgia.

"Not as much as you think."

"More than you realise."

They stood in comfortable silence for a moment, the weight of years between them, the warmth of mutual respect.

"Shall we?" Hiroshi asked.

Renjiro rose from his seat, the list folded neatly in his hand.

"Let's go."

The Academy grounds were alive with energy. Students milled about in clusters, their faces a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation. The air was filled with the buzz of conversation, the laughter of children, the occasional shout of someone spotting a friend.

Renjiro walked beside Hiroshi, his gaze sweeping across the crowd. He saw the graduates, their new forehead protectors gleaming in the morning light. He saw the jonin instructors, already assembled, their postures relaxed but their eyes sharp.

This is what we fight for, he thought, the realisation settling into his consciousness with unexpected clarity. Not for power, not for politics, but for this. For children who can grow up without fear. For families who can celebrate without mourning.

The jonin instructors noticed his approach. They nodded to him—small, professional gestures that acknowledged his position without drawing attention. He returned the nods, his expression neutral, his posture relaxed.

The ceremony began.

Renjiro stepped onto the stage, and the crowd quieted. His voice, when he spoke, carried across the training ground without effort.

"Congratulations."

He paused, letting the word settle.

"Today, you stop being Academy students. Today, you become shinobi."

He let the silence stretch, letting the weight of the moment press against the young graduates.

"You have trained. You have studied. You have prepared for this moment. But the real work begins now. The missions, the battles, the choices that will define who you become. I trust that you will serve this village with honour."

He unrolled the list and began to read the teams.

"Team Three. Jonin instructor: Daichi Senju."

He read the names of the genin assigned to the team. A boy, a girl, another boy—their faces bright with anticipation.

"Team Six. Jonin instructor: Haru Inuzuka."

More names. More faces. More futures being written.

"Team Nine. Jonin instructor: Rei Nara."

He paused, his gaze finding Izumi Uchiha in the crowd. Her dark hair was pulled back, her expression serious, her eyes fixed on him with an intensity that belied her age.

"Genin: Izumi Uchiha, ..."

The crowd murmured. Some parents exchanged glances. Others simply watched, their expressions unreadable.

"Team Fourteen. Jonin instructor: Takeshi Sarutobi."

He paused again, his gaze finding Anko Mitarashi; her dark hair wild, her eyes bright with mischief.

"Genin: Anko Mitarashi,..."

The murmurs grew louder. Anko was a known quantity—a troublemaker, a prodigy, a child who had been marked by tragedy but had refused to be defined by it.

"Team Twenty. Jonin instructor: Senju Yumiko."

More names. More faces. More futures.

When the last team was announced, Renjiro raised his hand, and the crowd quieted.

"Meet your assigned jonin," he said. "Watch for alternate meeting instructions. Some teams may have delayed introductions because of missions."

He paused, his gaze sweeping across the graduates.

"Congratulations. Serve the village well."

He stepped off the stage, and the crowd erupted into motion. Students rushed toward their new jonin, parents embraced their children, and the training ground became a sea of celebration.

Renjiro stepped away from the chaos, his role complete. The jonin instructors were already gathering their teams, their voices calm and professional. The graduates were already beginning their new lives, their futures uncertain but full of promise.

Saki appeared at his side, her expression composed, her voice professional.

"Commander."

"What's next?"

She checked her schedule, her eyes scanning the document.

"The Hokage requested your presence immediately."

Renjiro's attention sharpened.

"Urgent?"

She nodded.

"Very little time, Commander. He wants to see you now."

He did not question further. He simply turned and began walking toward the Hokage Tower.

The walk through Konoha was brief but reflective. Renjiro moved through the familiar streets, his mind already turning to the possibilities. Minato had requested his presence immediately—that was unusual.

Does he want to talk about the children? Renjiro wondered. The ones I found in the caravan? I still need to explain why I didn't return with them.

Or does he want to talk about something else? Something I haven't anticipated?

He reached the Hokage Tower, his steps quickening. The guards recognised him, nodding as he passed, and he ascended the stairs to Minato's office.

He knocked.

"Enter."

The door opened, and Renjiro stepped inside.

The office was as it always was—stacks of paperwork on the desk, maps on the walls, the afternoon light casting long shadows across the floor. Minato sat behind his desk, his expression calm, his blue eyes fixed on Renjiro with an intensity that was unusual even for him.

And standing beside him, his posture erect, his bandaged arm visible, his single eye gleaming with cold calculation, was Danzo Shimura.

Renjiro's internal reaction was immediate, sharp, controlled.

Of course, he thought, his mind racing. The bodies I returned. The Root agents. Danzo has come to complain—or to threaten. This meeting has nothing to do with academy graduations or the children I should have saved.

It is about something far more dangerous.
