Chapter 862 - 861-Semantics & Implications

The Hokage's office was a study in controlled tension, its familiar warmth now feeling like the calm before a storm. Renjiro stood just inside the doorway, his posture relaxed, his expression neutral, his eyes fixed on the two men before him.

Danzo's single visible eye was fixed on Renjiro with an intensity that was almost palpable. He did not acknowledge his presence with anything more than a glacial stare.

Renjiro kept his expression neutral, his voice calm.

"Lord Hokage, you summoned me?"

Minato's gaze shifted from Renjiro to Danzo and back.

"I did. Danzo has brought a complaint that concerns you."

Renjiro's eyes moved to Danzo, and he met the old war hawk's stare without flinching. The silence stretched, heavy with implication, and Renjiro mentally prepared himself for the battle to come.

Danzo spoke first, his voice cold, measured, carrying the weight of accusation.

"Five loyal Konoha shinobi have been murdered."

Renjiro's expression did not change. His voice, when he responded, was equally calm.

"That is unfortunate."

Danzo's eye narrowed. The casual response clearly irritated him, but he pressed on, his tone hardening.

"Their bodies were found outside my compound. They were Root operatives. Someone delivered them there deliberately, as a message."

"A message?" Renjiro's voice carried a note of polite confusion. "To whom?"

"To me," Danzo said, his voice flat. "And to anyone who might challenge the village's enemies."

Minato raised a hand, cutting through the tension.

"Renjiro, I called you here because Danzo believes you may have been involved."

Renjiro turned to Minato, his expression one of mild surprise.

"Involved in what, exactly? I recently returned to the village—" He paused, choosing his words carefully. "I haven't had time to involve myself in anything."

Minato nodded slowly.

"I confirmed that you were outside the village. Your departure was noted, and your return was logged."

Danzo's jaw tightened.

"That proves nothing. He could have sent agents, operatives, anyone to carry out the attack."

Renjiro turned back to Danzo, his voice carrying a note of genuine curiosity.

"Attack? I thought you said they were murdered. Now it's an attack? Which is it?"

Danzo's eye flickered—the first crack in his composure.

"Semantics."

"Not semantics," Renjiro countered. "If they were attacked, there would be witnesses, evidence, a trail. If they were murdered, that implies something else entirely."

He paused, letting the implication hang.

"Also, you mentioned they were Root operatives. Why were Root operatives outside your compound? Why would anyone target Root operatives specifically?"

Danzo's voice was cold, controlled.

"They were monitoring a potential threat."

"A potential threat?" Renjiro's voice carried a note of polite curiosity. "And what threat would that be?"

Danzo did not answer. The silence stretched, and Renjiro saw the opening.

"Wait," he said, his voice sharpening. "Were they monitoring my residence?"

Danzo's expression did not change, but Renjiro caught the subtle flicker—a tightening of the jaw, a fractional shift in posture. Got you.

Minato's attention sharpened.

"Danzo, were your operatives monitoring the Jonin Commander's residence?"

Danzo's voice was flat.

"They were observing potential threats to village security."

"My residence," Renjiro repeated, his voice cold. "You had Root operatives monitoring my home. Without my knowledge. Without my consent."

He turned to Minato.

"Lord Hokage, I have served this village faithfully for years. I have bled for Konoha. I have led its forces, built its defences, and trained its shinobi. And now I discover that Root operatives were stationed outside my home, watching me, reporting on me?"

He paused, letting the weight of the accusation settle.

"Had unknown armed shinobi been found around my home, someone might have mistaken them for enemies."

Danzo's voice was ice.

"You know what happened."

Renjiro met his gaze without flinching.

"Then prove it."

The silence that followed was absolute. Danzo's eye burned with fury, but he had no evidence, no proof, no confession. He had come to accuse, and instead, he had been cornered.

Minato rose from his desk, his voice cutting through the tension.

"Enough."

He looked at Danzo, his blue eyes cold.

"Root will cease such operations without my approval. Any surveillance of village personnel will require direct authorisation from the Hokage's office. Is that clear?"

Danzo's voice was tight.

"Hokage-sama, Root's operations are essential for village security—"

"Is that clear?"

Danzo's jaw tightened, but he inclined his head.

"Yes, Hokage-sama."

He turned and walked toward the door, his steps stiff, his posture rigid. Before he left, he glanced back at Renjiro—a look that promised retaliation, that promised future conflict, that promised that this was far from over.

Then he was gone.

The door closed behind Danzo with a soft click, and the room felt suddenly lighter, as if a shadow had lifted. Renjiro stood in the silence, his expression still neutral, but his mind was racing.

That's it, he thought. Whatever bridges existed between us are gone. Danzo now knows exactly where I stand. No more pretending at cooperation.

He evaluated the danger. Danzo was dangerous—always had been, always would be. He would not forget this humiliation. He would not forgive it. He would find a way to retaliate.

But things are different now.

Renjiro thought of the battle with Orochimaru—the green flames, the Susanoo, the chains. He thought of the Eternal Mangekyō, now within reach. He thought of the power he had accumulated, the influence he had built, the allies he had cultivated.

A few years ago, I wouldn't have dared provoke Danzo openly. Now I can. The Eternal Mangekyō is close. Once I obtain it, even Danzo becomes manageable.

Let him plot.

Minato broke the silence, his voice carrying a note of curiosity.

"How much of that was actually your fault?"

Renjiro kept his expression neutral, his voice calm.

"I'm not sure what you mean."

Minato studied him for a long moment, his blue eyes sharp.

"Renjiro, I've known you for years. I trust you. But I also know you. You don't provoke people without reason. You don't escalate without purpose. And you don't walk into a room with Danzo without already knowing how the conversation will end."

He leaned back in his chair.

"So I'll ask again: how much of that was actually your fault?"

Renjiro's internal thought was immediate, sharp.

Not answering that.

Admitting involvement meant confessing to killing Konoha shinobi—even Root operatives. Even Minato could not ignore that. The political consequences would be severe, the legal implications dire. He needed plausible deniability, and he needed it now.

"You're asking the wrong person," he said, his voice calm. "I don't know what you're talking about."

Minato's lips curved into a slight smile.

"I see."

Renjiro deliberately changed the subject.

"Though I have to admit, that was well played."

Minato raised an eyebrow.

"What was?"

"Using the situation to cut down Root's influence. You've wanted tighter control over Root for a while. Danzo handed you the opportunity on a silver platter."

Minato's smile widened.

"Maybe."

"You took advantage of the opening immediately," Renjiro continued. "You limited his authority, required authorisation, and reminded him who the Hokage is. That was a masterful move."

Minato's voice carried a note of dry humour.

"It would have been a crime not to."

He paused, his eyes meeting Renjiro's.

"You practically handed it to me."

Renjiro chuckled—a genuine sound, surprised out of him.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Minato shook his head, but he was smiling.

"Of course you don't."
