Chapter 125: Ambushed
"How should I answer?" Gao Qi tilted her head, glanced at Zhang Yang, and smiled faintly, saying, "I gave him four words!"
"Which four words?" Zhang Yang asked with great interest.
"Ask my man!"
"Isn't that three words?"
"Well, my math isn't that great." Gao Qi looked embarrassed, stretched out her jade-like arm, and rubbed Zhang Yang's chest. "I'll fix it next time!"
"Bullshit, if your math sucks, why'd you study accounting?" Zhang Yang pondered the meaning of that phone call—were they trying to confuse things, or did they really want to apologize?
The eight men who beat Gao Qi's father—seven were already crippled, and the one who knew the most, Ah Ye, was dead. For the Bai family, this matter was over. Even if someone pursued it, they could dump all the blame on Ah Ye. So why bother making another move? Zhang Yang couldn't figure it out.
After thinking it through, there was only one possibility: before Ah Ye was silenced, he might have confessed to being caught by Chen Tianxiong. That could've made the Bai family nervous that their secret had been exposed, forcing them into this desperate move.
But Zhang Yang still didn't know who was behind it, so he couldn't jump to conclusions.
"So, if they call again, how should I respond?" Gao Qi's snowy breasts pressed together and slowly rubbed upward—it seemed she wanted to continue…
Damn it, I've got to ask the system for a bedroom skill next time! Zhang Yang's forehead darkened. He pressed down on her restless butt and said, "Give me the phone number. I'll handle this."
"Oh!" Gao Qi, without a hint of shyness, climbed out of bed completely naked to grab her phone. Seeing the mess on her body, she went to wash up first. When she came back, Zhang Yang was already asleep and snoring.
She smiled softly, leaned her head on his chest, and rubbed against it. This guy was completely exhausted. She'd have to make it up to him tomorrow.
The next day, Zhang Yang drove with Xu Danlu to pick up her father from the hospital. Xu Maogen's condition had clearly improved—a lot. His weight was up to one hundred and thirty, and though his face was still a bit pale, an MRI and enhanced CT scan before discharge confirmed that all the cancer cells had been eliminated, and his body functions had basically returned to normal.
Originally, a crowd of reporters came to interview him, but Zhang Yang came up with a trick and slipped out the back door, heading straight for Seaview Court.
After settling Xu Danlu's parents in, Zhang Yang called Chen Tianxiong, planning to bring Lulu to meet him and also discuss the construction project with Zhou Lunfa.
On the way, Zhang Yang got a call from an unfamiliar number—the same one that had called Gao Qi yesterday.
Zhang Yang thought for a moment and picked up.
"Mr. Zhang, Miss Gao Qi said you're authorized to represent her."
The voice was hoarse, obviously disguised.
Zhang Yang glanced at Xu Danlu beside him and replied, "That's right. Speak your mind."
"It's simple. We hope you'll stop investigating He Ting's case. It's not good for either of us."
"Heh!" Zhang Yang chuckled. "Is that a threat?"
"N-no, that's not what I meant. Since we made this request, we're hoping both sides can reconcile."
"Reconcile? Sure. But first, tell me who you are," Zhang Yang said casually, slowing down the car.
"Who we are doesn't matter. Just name your price—we'll give you fair compensation. You'll be satisfied, as long as you stop digging. Don't ask who we are."
Zhang Yang laughed. "Then there's nothing to talk about. Because what we want isn't just money."
"What else do you want?"
"Let's talk face to face. You think we'll just take a bit of cash after you've put someone in a coma? How much can you give? A hundred million? A billion?"
"Face to face?" The other side hesitated, clearly reluctant. "That's impossible."
"Then there's nothing to discuss. Bye."
"Wait!" The man seemed to give in, pausing before speaking slowly, "Fine. We can meet—but we pick the place."
"Bullshit. You pick the place, and I walk right into your den? You think I'm insane?" Zhang Yang refused without a thought.
"Then what do you want?" The man sighed, giving Zhang Yang the upper hand.
"Alright, let's do it at the entrance of Dengen Tower."
The man sounded surprised, hesitated, then said, "Sorry, I'll need to get approval."
"Then call me back when you've got it. You've got two minutes." Zhang Yang switched the phone to his other hand, eyes fixed on the intersection ahead. Left led to Qianshui Street, right to Dengen Tower.
In two minutes, the light ahead would turn red. If they agreed, he'd go check it out. In front of Dengen Tower, they wouldn't dare pull anything big.
"Mr. Zhang, don't hang up. I'll reply quickly!"
Zhang Yang snorted, neither agreeing nor refusing, but kept the line open. The car slowed and rolled forward.
"I feel like they're stalling for time," Xu Danlu, who'd been silent, suddenly said.
No sooner had she spoken than Zhang Yang saw two sharp screeching sounds from the corner ahead—the red light had just gone out, and before the green could switch, two SUVs came rushing out.
Two Toyota Prados drove the wrong way, one behind the other, charging straight at Zhang Yang's Land Rover.
Zhang Yang's eyes tightened. The system hadn't yet issued the third danger warning, but it was obvious—they were after him. The SUVs came fast. Before Zhang Yang could react fully, they scraped past a Volkswagen in front, split left and right, and rammed into the Land Rover's driver-side doors from both sides.
Clearly, they wanted to kill or maim Zhang Yang and Lulu in one go.
In the chaos, Zhang Yang could only yank the steering wheel hard, imitating their move…
"Bang!" "Boom!"
Deafening crashes erupted. Both SUVs slammed into the Land Rover's front and rear instead of the side doors.
Zhang Yang felt a powerful force yank him forward, slamming him toward the steering wheel. Just before his head hit, the airbag exploded open, bouncing him back and giving him a brief buffer.
The massive impact nearly knocked him out, but he knew he couldn't faint—his attackers came prepared; there was no way they'd stop after one crash.
Pain surged through him. Leaning against the airbag, he glanced around. Both SUVs were wrecked too, but he saw three men from one and two from the other jump out, heading straight for his Land Rover—one bald guy was even holding a gun!
Zhang Yang stayed still, pretending to be unconscious, glancing at Xu Danlu—she was also shielded by the airbag.
He gave her a look, signaling her to stay silent.
Three of the five men, including the bald one, came to his side. The bald man peered inside at motionless Zhang Yang, hesitated, then said to the man beside him, "Open the door. Be quick!"
The other man tugged at the handle a few times, frowned, and said, "No good, it's locked! Just shoot him!"
The bald man glared at him. "You idiot! If we fire, it's no longer an accident—it's murder!"
He glanced at the car window and said coldly, "Set the gas tank on fire!"
