Shikamaru groaned. 'Tch… Fighting Sakura of all people. How troublesome… I just hope she doesn't start screaming like Ino.'
Neji glanced at Naruto, eyes cold. 'Good. You'll be my first step to proving destiny isn't some joke.'
Sasuke smirked. 'Gaara… I'll show you what it means to awaken the Sharingan fully.'
Kankuro breathed a silent sigh of relief. 'Not Gaara... Thank the gods.'
Temari gave Dosu a side-glance. 'This'll be a good fight. Hope he doesn't die too easily.'
Shikamaru raised his hand lazily. "Uh, question."
"Yes?" Hiruzen said with a smile.
"Only one person wins, right? So that's the only one who becomes a Chuunin?"
"Not necessarily," Hiruzen replied, his tone shifting to solemn gravity. "The final round isn't about winning or losing. It's about demonstrating leadership, strategy, adaptability, and presence. The judges myself included alongside the Kazekage, the various daimyo, and village leaders, will evaluate you."
He paused to let the words settle.
"It's possible that multiple Genin may be promoted… or none of you at all."
Temari blinked. "So even if someone loses… they could still become a Chuunin?"
"Exactly," Hiruzen affirmed.
"To 'advance' in the tournament… means maximizing your appeal to the judges. Show them you are worthy. Prove that you are no longer mere children but proud shinobi."
The Genin stood silent, the weight of his words sinking in like lead. Some wore expressions of determination while some showed uncertainty. But all of them now understood that this was not merely a tournament, but a judgment.
"This concludes our preliminaries," Hiruzen said finally, with a calm smile. "Thank you for your patience. We are adjourned… until next month."
He turned and walked off the stage, his robes billowing behind him like the setting sun drawing the curtain on this first act.
And far behind, deep in the shadows of the hall, a sand-wielding jinchūriki stared ahead in silence, already plotting his next move.
------
As the crowd thinned and the tension of the preliminaries dissolved into the charged stillness of anticipation, Naruto stood near the exit of the battle hall with his arms crossed, eyes closed, a serene smile painted across his lips.
He had no fear or pressure.
The upcoming battle didn't worry him, not because he underestimated Neji, but because he was far more powerful than him.
That, and perhaps, a touch of something more primal.
Not far away, Sasuke stood with his fists clenched and his eyes fixed on his teacher.
"Kakashi," Sasuke said, his voice sharp with purpose, "I want you to train me over the next month. No matter what. I won't waste any more time."
The silver-haired jōnin looked at him, one eye narrowing with thoughtful amusement.
"Mmm… Truthfully," Kakashi replied, slipping his hands into his pockets, "I already had a plan regarding your training."
"Then we have no time to lose!" Sasuke declared, and without waiting for permission, turned and sprinted toward the exit, a gust of wind following his path.
Kakashi chuckled behind his mask. "He's fired up… That much is clear."
He turned his gaze back toward Naruto, who hadn't moved a muscle.
"But most of that fire… is thanks to you," He muttered under his breath, before vanishing after his student.
The rest of the Genin began filing out of the hall, still abuzz with quiet chatter.
Naruto turned on his heel and casually walked out, flanked by two particular kunoichi who never strayed too far from him now.
Behind them, Karin trailed for a few steps before Naruto stopped and turned around.
"You don't need to follow us, Karin," He said gently, a flicker of warmth in his tone.
Karin blinked, a little confused. "But…?"
"You should go meet up with your team," Naruto continued. "Soon, you won't need to stay in the Sound Village anymore. Once everything's settled, I'll bring you to Konoha. You'll live with me."
The red-haired girl's eyes softened as her heart skipped in her chest. His words weren't a promise, but they were truth, spoken like the decree of someone who could shape fate itself.
She nodded slowly, a small smile breaking across her lips. "Okay… I'll wait for you, Naruto-sama~"
Naruto smiled back.
They didn't need anything more. She turned and left, her heart light.
Later that evening, the scent of freshly prepared broth filled the air as Naruto pushed open the familiar flap of Ichiraku Ramen.
"Old man, make it three bowls!" Naruto called, his voice loud with joy.
"Coming right up!" Teuchi laughed from behind the counter. "One for each of the beautiful ladies with you?"
Sakura laughed nervously. "Hello, Uncle Teuchi~…"
Ino winked at Naruto. "I'll take two. I'll need the strength… for whatever 'reward' you're planning to give me later."
Naruto raised an eyebrow and smirked. "Greedy already, huh?"
Ino leaned closer, her voice a teasing whisper, lips almost brushing his ear. "I'm expecting something… hard."
Naruto chuckled and tapped her lightly on the forehead, causing her to pout adorably.
"Be patient," He whispered back with a grin. "You'll get something good. Something that'll make your legs shake."
Sakura blushed at their shameless flirting and looked away, pretending to admire the menu.
Their ramen bowls arrived, steaming and rich with aroma. They ate, they laughed, and for a moment, it wasn't about exams or enemies or expectations.
When they finished, the trio stepped out into the cool night, standing just beyond the warm glow of the shop.
"Walk safely, both of you," Naruto said, slipping his hands into his pockets.
Ino kissed him on the cheek and whispered, "You better mean that reward, my lord~"
Sakura giggled and planted a kiss on his cheek.
They waved goodbye and parted, disappearing into the twilight-lit street.
Naruto returned to his home, a modest yet cozy place tucked behind one of Konoha's quieter blocks. The lights were on, and warmth seeped through the window panes like a mother's embrace.
The moment he opened the door, a familiar scent wrapped around him.
"Welcome home," A soft voice came.
Kushina Uzumaki stood in the kitchen doorway, arms crossed, a slight grin playing on her lips. Her long red hair shimmered in the light like molten fire, and her eyes gleamed with mischief and hunger.
"How did the exam go?" She asked.
Naruto grinned like a child who had just stolen a forbidden cookie.
"Passed it with flying colors," He said as he stepped forward and wrapped his arms tightly around her. "Only one round left."
Kushina laughed softly and leaned into his hug, her arms encircling him in return. She tilted her head and kissed his cheek. "I'm so proud of you, my baby~"
"Thanks, Mom…"
He buried his face in her bosom, taking a deep breath, long enough to let her warmth seep into the growing storm inside him.
Outside, the moon had begun its slow climb.
